USC Students Receive National Awards

<p>Students at SC have a variety of interests and backgrounds. The following have recently received recognition for their talents or achievements:</p>

<p>Hannah Park, a student in the School of Cinematic Arts, has received the Walt Whitman Award for Poetry.</p>

<p>The "Pharmacist of the Year (Student) Award from the American Pharmacists' Association was given to Daniel Kudryashov of the USC School of Pharmacy.</p>

<p>Only 40 students in the U.S. are awarded Gates Cambridge Scholarships each year. Reid Lidow earned one of the forty and will study at University of Cambridge. At SC Lidow has a double major in political science and international relations.</p>

<p>The Gibson Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding leader with a strong academic record in the field of pharmacy. Only 13 in the U.S. are selected for these scholarships. Amanda Wang is one of the 13 selected by the American Pharmacists' Association. Amanda was honored last year with an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.</p>

<p>Kelly Miller was chosen by Pacific Standard as one of the "30 Top Thinkers under 30". She is a Ph.D. candidate at USC and a recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellowship.</p>

<p>Other USC students have been honored…</p>

<p>Melody Chang, a student at the Thornton School of Music, was awarded first prize at the Hong Kong International Violin Competition. She also won the Chinese Work Award.</p>

<p>Ostrow School of Dentistry’s Seonghong Min, received a $25,000 grant from the Academy of
Osseointegration Foundation. Min is a resident at Ostrow. He will present his work at the academy’s 2014 annual meeting in Seattle, WA.</p>

<p>Thornton composition student, Georgi Dimitrov (MM’14), received the Graduate Arts Award from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation for exceptional creativity and artistic talent.</p>

<p>Jamari Perry’s documentary “Soaring on Invisible Wings” won the Grand Prize at the African American Women in Cinema Festival. Perry’s film involved the story of the autoimmune disease, Lupus, and how it affected her family.</p>

<p>USC Jazz Combo from the jazz studies department at Thornton won first place for their performance at the Next Generation Jazz Festival.</p>

<p>Computer science major, Stephanie Aseves, of the Viterbi School has received the Northrop Grumman Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Stephanie has a 3.5 GPA in CS and has held leadership positions in various campus organizations, including Helenes.</p>

<p>These are some students who received international fellowships:</p>

<p>Luke Buomo is a 2014 Goldwater Scholar. At SC he studied physics and mathematics. </p>

<p>Two students achieved Goldwater Scholar-Honorable Mention. They were Dalton Van Banh who studied biochemistry and Saro Meguerdiijian who studied chemical engineering.</p>

<p>A Humanity in Action Fellowship recipient is Mushfigur Chowdhury. He will study abroad in western Europe. He is one of SC’s Posse Scholars.</p>

<p>Gilman Scholars are selected for international study from a pool of outstanding Pell Grant holders. SC had the following chosen:</p>

<p>Oscar De Los Santos will study in Spain.
Rachel Jones will study in New Zealand.
Li Lou will study in the Czech Republic.
Dorcas Nasubo will study in Brazil.
Erin Noble will study in Italy.
Cassie Tseng will study in the Czech Republic</p>

<p>Sumita Barahmand, who is a Ph.D. candidate in the Viterbi School of Engineering, was awarded 1 of 39 Google Global Fellowships for her work in cloud computing. This is a two year fellowship which includes tuition, fees and a $33,000 stipend. Her field is computer science.</p>

<p>Qandeel Sajid of the Viterbi School of Engineering has been awarded the National Physical Science Consortium Fellowship. He will do research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.</p>

<p>Named a Critical Language Scholar for 2014 is Vivian Yan. She will study in China.</p>

<p>Sarah Herald is enrolled in the new major, computational neuroscience, offered by the Dornsife School. She is the recipient of the 2014 Rakusin Neuroscience Scholarship.</p>

<p>Lauren Fishelman has been presented with the Kilmarx Presidential Fellowship award.</p>

<p>Eight USC students have received Albert Schweitzer Fellowships for 2014. They are in the fields of dentistry or medicine.</p>

<p>Three more Critical Language Scholars have been added.</p>

<p>Five spring Gilman Scholars have been named in addition to the six for summer.</p>

<p>Fulbright Scholars are still being named. So far SC has seven as of today.</p>

<p>Three Boren Scholars have been honored.</p>

<p>A Dornsife student has received the Zukerman Prize in American Studies.</p>

<p>Three students have been awarded 2014 National Science Foundation Research Fellowships.</p>

<p>A Truman Scholar was named.</p>

<p>Chaoqi Zhang of the USC School of Cinematic Arts was officially selected to compete in the Annecy Film Festival in France. This festival brings together the best in animated films from around the world. Also selected for the honor of competing were three USC alumni from SCA animation.</p>

<p>Four more Fulbright Scholars named.</p>

<p>Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowships were awarded to four </p>

<p>Ethan Ahmad was awarded the prestigious Zildjian Scholarship for Percussion. Ethan studies at the USC Thornton School of Music.</p>

<p>Another Thornton student was awarded the Grand Prize at the Kennedy Center VSA International Young Soloists Competition. His instrument is the piano. </p>

<p>Dornsife student, Kelly Miller, was named one of the “Top Thinkers under 30”.</p>

<p>An Annenberg student was awarded a Google Journalism Fellowship. Only 11 were awarded this year.</p>

<p>Teng Chen of SCA Digital Arts was selected for the Silver Medal at the 2014 Annual Student Academy Awards
for animation.</p>

<p>A Viterbi mechanical engineering student has been named an Infiniti Star, one of three, out of 1500 applicants.</p>

<p>Doris Chen and Kyung Kim were chosen All Americans for women’s golf.</p>

<p>Catching up on more honors…</p>

<p>Sara Siegel was named a Saul Kagan Fellow. Her research interests are associated with the Shoah Foundation testimonies.</p>

<p>Rosalie Murphy received the Pulitzer Center International Fellowship for Reporting.</p>

<p>Maria-Elena Martinez was awarded a research fellowship at the Stanford Humanities Center. She was one of only 10 selected this year. She also received a National Humanities Fellowship.</p>
