I'm planning on transferring to USC as a Sophomore next year.

I just have a few questions about the transfer process. The website says that I need at least 30 credits or they will look at your high school record. My high school record is not horrible, I have a 4.1 weighted GPA with a 2180 SAT. But what I'm really worried about is whether or not I will be able to complete 30 credits in one semester.

Should I start early during the summer so that I can spread the 30 credits out?

If it matters, I'm going to attend UC Irvine, and my AP Scores were 5 in Calc AB, Physics B, English Lang, 4 in Psychology, and 3 in European History. This year I took Calc BC, Physics C Mechanics, English Lit, and Macroeconomics.

Your HS record is fine for USC. They will ALSO look at your college grades, so don’t mess up by taking so many credits that your gpa is ho-hum or worse.

The 30 credits needed would be completed by the end of your freshman year, so I don’t know why you even have to cram. USC doesn’t expect any of their transfer students to cram 30 units in one semester, so why are you? They just want the 30 completed by the end of your freshman year.

(If I have somehow misunderstood USC’s transfer policies, my answer would still be to have a normal freshman year at UCI and apply the following year. There are just too many ways to tank the gpa by trying to cram in 20 - 30 credits in a single semester… and then you’ve ruined a chance to transfer to almost any other higher ranked college for good.)

The 30 credits are only for those who don’t want to submit HS transcripts but if you pull a solid first semester they will ask for your spring grades and all you have to do is show you can handle the course load… Good luck and fight on!!!

Thank you guys for your response.

I’m curious as to whether or not there are also other requirements such as entrance placement exams? Also, how many classes is 30 credits?

I was thinking it is about 5 or 6 classes? Isn’t that viable to finish in one semester?

Also, is my high school record weak or just right for USC? I didn’t apply for freshman year because I believed USC Financial aid was not very generous.

Also, some people have stated that the 30 credits have to be completed by spring semester, which is one semester.

Which one is the correct answer? I’m sort of confused…

30 credits is more like 8-10 classes if you don’t have 30 credits by the spring you will be ask for your spring grades and they will make a decision by July based on it and your HS info… I applied with 33 credits therefore I didn’t have to submit SATs and got my acceptance package may 3

Do you know if AP Credit counts for the 30 credits?

Should I start during the summer?

Congrats on your acceptance!

hey buddy, which CC are you planning on going to?

I went to SMC and over there you do have to take ENG/MATH placement tests, so go do that before Summer if you can.

What I did was I took:
1 summer class
5 fall classes

1 winter class

4 spring classes

I had 22 units at the time of applying / 34 after freshman year.

I got a spring-grade request but I have friends that got straight up accepted, and they only had like 3 or 4 more units than me. I had a 3.85 also so it was about total units not grades.

If I were you I would take 2 classes in either the summer or winter session and 1 in the other one, along with 5 classes in the fall, and about 4 in the spring.

Make sure you complete as many GE’s as possible (I finished all but 1 until spring, and only have 1 left that I will finish in 2 weeks)

The most important thing to USC is the writing requirement, make sure you finish the english with writing before you apply if you want to get accepted and not spring grade requested.

If you apply to Marshall, it is a MUST that you complete business calc. If you are taking business calc in the spring as a sophomore marshall applicant then you will 100% receive a spring grade request at best. See if you can finish Calc in winter.

Hope this helped!

Also, there are 2 full semesters (at most schools): fall and spring, and two short sessions: summer and winter

each normal class is about 3 units, and then most math/science classes are about 4/5 units.

My school limits us to 16 units but you can request to receive an additional 2 units I think.

I’m planning on attending UCI in the fall.

I believe my placement tests have been taken care of through SAT and AP Scores.
I’m only wondering about the summer classes due to the amount of credits that I need to complete.

Wow Congrats, I’m assuming you got accepted after the spring grade request. Did that happen purely due to credits? I thought it was 30 credits by the time you ended freshman year.

Did taking all those classes affect your social or educational life in anyway? I mean like were you still able to live normally even though you were cramming all those classes.

I’m planning on applying to the school of engineering. So I believe I will have to fill up my classes with science and math related GE’s?

@permapoop 5 classes isn’t cramming most students take from 15-18 credits which is about 5 classes you should be fine… I would even say take two summer courses nothing to hard English and a sociology two easy As just remember to keep a high gpa so they can accept you right away… So if you take 6cr in the summer 18cr in the fall and 6in the winter by the time you apply you will have your lucky number 30… From what I learned most people who get SGR don’t find out if they get in until July the ones who completed all the GEReqs for USC and have strong GPAs get there decisions fairly quick good luck…
