Since I moved across the country at the beginning of junior year, I was unable to take any AP classes during 11th grade. I took all Honors and devoted myself to Newspaper class. For my senior year, I am taking 4 APs (AP Calculus I, AP English Lit, AP Government, and AP Econ) and am editor in chief of my high school newspaper. I also have five A's and one B currently.

Last summer, I applied and was accepted (there were over a hundred applicants and only ten were admitted) for a five week summer sportswriting internship with the top newspaper in Florida- The Orlando Sentinel. I interviewed top athletes from the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Orlando Magic and wrote stories that were published.

Although, the internship is over.. today I am freelancing for the same newspaper. Recently I have wrote game stories on local high school football teams. It's awesome to have firsthand experience doing exactly what I want to do!

I got letters of rec from a staff writer and the editor of the sports section of the Orlando Sentinel.

Rate me at these schools:
-Univ of Southern California (TOP choice. My great uncle was head of the Science & Health dept and wrote me a letter of rec as well-- I know legacy helps!)
-Univ of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
-Univ of Florida
-Boston Univ
-Univ of Miami (Florida)
-Univ of Washington (Seattle)

Also just had a great interview with the USC Admissions Director for the School of Journalism. There were no interviews set in Florida so I flew all the way to Philadelphia for the day just for a 30 minute interview! Everyone there knew how much I wanted to go to USC!

--I know my test scores are on the lower side, but do my ECs make up for it? I'm not a great test taker but I'm good at what I want to major in!

bump.........

I don't know much about the others, but I'd say you're probably in at BU and UM.

Sorry I can't be of further help. Good luck though.

... Whats the point of posting? Your in.

Thanks for the input, but I wouldn't say I'm for sure in USC or UMich. They are both very selective schools. But here's to hoping!

haha we have similar schools!!! haha
i'm applying to USC, UMich, BU and Uni miami...my SAT scores suck and my grades and ECs are great! lolz....been dreaming about USC...not a legacy tho...but i'm trying! lolz

Yeah, I'm not really a legacy either! Just my Uncle used to like be a medical director for student services... don't know where that falls under. Good luck to you too!!

i'd say you're definitely in

I'm definitely in... where? USC? How can ya'll say that? Like is it my journalism experience or GPA? I know it's not my ACT score lol.

You are def a reach for Michigan and SC due to your below avg ACT and OOS status for Michigan. Your uncle doesnt make you a legacy (must be parent or sibling, sometimes grandparent), but since he headed a dept it should really help you at SC. Should be good at the others with possible exceptions being UW and UF, they are very numbers based, and your ACT is below the avg of accepted OOS students. good luck!

actually i think you're in at UW. good luck!

One more question.. do I stand out with my ECs? Or do a lot of others have such stellar internships/jobs?

bump ......

is there anyone here who can answer that?

thanks!

my last bump...

Hey, I'd say you're in for BU and UMiami. USC and UMichigan are targets...maybe slight reaches. However, I know mostly about USC, so I will comment on that. Fortunately USC is more hollistic in the admission process, so that could greatly help you. Your ACT scores are not that bad, but the range for mid 50% is 29-33. Everything else is solid, plus you have a strong passion for Journalism and acted on it, so that will help. Bottom line, you have a good shot. Also, how competitive is you HS? Is it ranked?

i don't know much about all of the schools that you're applying to, but i'd say you'll get into BU. UMiami is probably a match -- i go to school there so if you have any questions you can message me! I'm guessing you're in-state for UF since you had the internship in Orlando... if you are, then UF is a match as well.

I live in Florida now, so I am in state for UMiami and UFlorida

9th-10th grade: Ranked 33rd best High School in California
Current (11th-12th grade): 241st best public high school in the nation from a complete list of 1300 public high schools. It is also ranked 33rd best High School in Florida.

Does that help at all?

Thanks for the input!

Think it's ironic that I moved to a new school with the same state ranking haaha.

I find out about UMich any day now. It's rolling admission so the latest I find out is Dec. 21st! Hopefully sooner than that.. the wait is killing me!

Since UMich is rolling/early admission, can I get rejected.. or are there no rejections for rolling - just deferred?

does anyone know??
