USC Viterbi Professors Win National Awards

<p>The Viterbi School of Engineering has announced a list of recent honors awarded to professors in various departments.</p>

<p>Heading the list of honors is Dr. Sol Golomb who received the National Medal of Science by President Obama at a White House ceremony.</p>

<p>Dr. Mike Gruntman was inducted into the International Academy of Astronautics.</p>

<p>Chemical engineering Professor Malancha Gupta has won the National Science Foundation Career Award for her studies of polymer coatings. The award includes a $400,000 grant. Dr. Gupta won the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research New Investigator Award in 2012.</p>

<p>Only two Grainger Awards are given each year by the National Academy of Engineering. This year SC's Dr. Andrea Armani has won the Grainger Award of $30,000 for her innovative work and research.</p>

<p>Dr. Yon Liu was awarded a National Science Foundation Career Award of $510,000. She is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Viterbi.</p>

<p>Alumnus and National Medal of Science honoree, Dr. Andrew Viterbi was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.</p>

<p>Dr. Philipp Koehn, another USC Viterbi alumnus, has been nominated for the European Inventor of the Year Award for his innovative work in machine translation.</p>

<p>Fei Sha has been honored as a Sloan Research Fellow.</p>

<p>Danny Cohen, computer science pioneer, has been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.</p>

<p>Stephen Lu was named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.</p>

<p>Yolanda Gill has been honored as an AAAI Fellow.</p>

<p>Dr. Maja Mataric was honored by the Borg Institute with the 2013 Woman of Vision Award in Innovation. She is nationally known for her work with robots.</p>
