UT austin 2017/2018 Transfer Thread

@nervous5135 the ap’s on the transcript have to include the class that it is crediting. My daughters ap’s are just listed as a general “26 ap units” rather than the individual courses. UT said they won’t accept those because it doesn’t state the individual course it will give credit for at my daughters university.

@Thompson2688 if UT rejects me, and I decide to petition for my spring grades, is there a chance they could deny my petition?

@junchul2 honestly, I have no idea. If your grades are good, raise your GPA, and show an upward trend of grades, then you should at least have a chance. I would call just to make sure because I’m not specifically sure. Sorry I couldn’t be of anymore help!

@junchul2 You would appeal your decision and send your spring grades and they would reevaluate your application.

Yall watch this, the entire channel/video series is golden. It helps explain the entire UT transfer process, it was very helpful for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fNxOZcDcrg

could someone chance me/add me to the list?

-3.57 GPA at my CC, but due to UT’s policy, they’ll average out my repeated courses instead of replacing them, which means the two dual credit classes I did bad in in high school would just be averaged with my retakes of those classes, giving me a 3.27.
-a strong statement of purpose that explains what i was going through in high school and why i did poorly in dual credit, and an equally strong topic of importance that is specific to my major
-lots of volunteer work and prior work experience
-3 extra cirriculars
-all As in college with one B
-39 hours, 18 from AP scores
-made the President’s List for having a 4.0 GPA during my fall semester
-applying for government

thanks for all the help in answering my questions! this thread has been very helpful to me throughout this whole process. and btw, i called the admissions office about the chances of being accepted through an appeal and they called it a “longshot” saying that it happens very rarely. just hoping that UT will see the upward trend in my grades and the success ive been having at the college level after my dual credit mistakes in high school.

@junchul2 how many dual credit hours did you take and what years did you take them in? And do you know if there’s any way besides the essay to address dual credit? Like a little note to the admissions committee? I’m wondering because for my Essay C I wrote about a bad concussion I had in High School instead of writing about the dual credit.

@Thompson2688 I took two 3 credit hour classes, so a total of 6. and i took them during my senior year. and honestly, i have no idea about addressing it separately, my advisor and i had just worked out that i should include it in my statement of purpose.

@junchul2 Do you mind if I ask what grade you made on those and what classes they were? And if you’re applying to liberal arts and you have an overall 3.27 then it might be a little bit of a stretch. The video I linked in the previous message said Liberal Arts transfers usually avg a gpa from around 3.4-3.5. But your situation is unique since it was dual credit and you did make a 4.0 last semester. In all honesty, make your resume stand out and get good recommendation letters from your professors and people who know you personally. Make sure the recommendations don’t restate whats already on your resume or essays. I really hope this helps and I again suggest watching the video series by UT Admissions guy on youtube.

@Thompson2688 i got a D in Federal Government and a C in Macroeconomics, I retook government and got a B+ (i know, i really needed an A) and i am currently retaking econ.

@junchul2 If your essays thoroughly explain what caused you to make those grades, like if you had a parent die or you had a serious injury that hospitalized you, then they should understand. The transfer application is a holistic review, meaning that they look at all aspects to the application. But like @awesomesaucee said before, UT is notorious when it comes to GPA. So tbh I can’t definitively say yes or no. I can’t even say I’m gonna make it because my GPA is low compared to others (3.42). Sorry about the downer, but you still have a chance because of your 4 point last semester, and your applying to liberal arts instead of engineering or business.

Hey friends! So I’m actually now an admitted transfer student at UT and to be honest this thread was a tremendous help for me in the process! So I just wanted to pop by and answer some questions you might have/if you need some basic tips for admission. Just figured it would be cool to help people out!

@thatlilnerd standing ovation from entire thread

Hi, I’m new here & thank you so so much for this thread. I just have a question regarding pre-reqs:
I’m applying for CNS (neuroscience), I have a 4.0, submitted two great essays and three great LOCs, have an extensive resume (countless volunteer hours), have 24 completed science credits and 36 credits overall (plus four classes in AP credits), 14 in-progress–4 of which are in Organic Chemistry and 4 in Precalculus II.
I had a 3.71 in high school and was top 15% and took AP Calculus (didn’t pass test) and got an A.
I tested out of pre-cal I in college, but I ended up being unable to test out of pre-cal II (lack of time). So now I’m stuck taking Precal II and will take Cal I in the summer, with basically no math credits.
Do you think UT will consider my math history (sent my hs transcript and one LOC explains AP Cal background) and in-progress/future classes into my admission decision for my major? Thank you in advance!!!

@msfmp1 Are there any specific pre-reqs you need to have with math for neuroscience? If there is, and you don’t have them completed, then I would suggest applying to another major and try transferring. But if not, then you should be ok seeing as you have a 4.0 with the amount of credits you have. I would not take my word for it though seeing as I have not looked into CNS and more specifically neuroscience.

@raibaby You should have a good shot seeing your GPA is a 4.0 and you’re applying to CLS. However, I would NOT sleep on those LOC’s, try and get at least two, like a professor.
