UT austin 2017/2018 Transfer Thread

@awesomesaucee so the only requirement for government is to have enough hours and a good GPA? I haven’t done my math credit yet but I plan on doing it this summer. I have 40 credits from AP and last semester and this semester I will have another 15 so a total of 55. I had a 3.94 last semester, made the Dean’s list and so far all A’s this semester. Had a 5.0 when I graduated high school but I don’t think they really look at high school at this point. But the only thing I haven’t taken is a math course which like I said I will plan on taking it hopefully at ACC this summer. Will that matter? Also can you please add me to the list. I have 2 great essays and 2 great LOR’s one from a high school history teacher and the other from a professor last semester.

@colanxgirl it shouldn’t be a problem that you haven’t finished your math credit yet, because you can do that at your time at UT. Just focus on keeping your grades high. You have a good shot! I’ll add you to the list.

@junchul2 I saw nobody answered questions, but I believe spring would be slightly more competitive than fall because there are less open spaces halfway through the year.

I also think philosophy and government would be pretty equal in terms of competitiveness, but we can’t know for sure. Check out the past transfer list I posted to compare the admitted students

do you guys have everything turned in yet ?

I have everything turned in, my application says complete. What does everyone else’s say?

@utcshopeful @colanxgirl Turned everything in at the beginning of January. My portal still says “Your application for admission is complete.” I don’t think the portal will change until March 1 when they finish with all the freshman applicants and the transfer applicants start to go into review.

Just turned everything in for admissions. Still waiting on some recommendation letters though…

Does anyone know how important the financial aid short answer questions are? They only give you ten lines max so my answers aren’t looking very convincing.

@rusalochkaa I haven’t looked into it yet. I don’t see myself getting financial aid so I’m planning on net even applying for it. Does anyone else have any insight?

@Thompson2688 tbh, I’m also not expecting much, but don’t you have to apply for finaid to get offered loans from the school?

Hi, I would like yall to chance me and add me to the list. I am a CAP student at UT Arlington. Applying for McCombs.

Gpa:4.0 (Honors College)
Hours:46 by the end of springs semester (freshman)
Got A’s in MacroEcon and Calc 1. I think I will get all A’s this semester as well.
Ec: Freshmen Leaders on Campus, Finance Society, Maverick Mentors, UTA volunteers, and started a non-profit for the homeless Streets of Love
LOR: 3 from professors at UTA
Essays: decent (Topic A & E)

Could someone chance me (external xfer)? App completely submitted.

  • 3.7 GPA at one college
  • 1.7 GPA at another school but the new school I retook those classes and made A's. I spoke to an advisor who said the classes are old enough that I can probably invoke fresh start where those grades won't be included - I have emailed her to follow up to see what I need to do about that.
  • Total of 60 hours, will have my associates in Liberal Arts this May
  • 15+ years of volunteering with Relay For Life
  • Letters of rec from my supervisor and the director of my department, waiting on volunteer LOR but not sure they'll get to it unfortunately
  • Member of National Society of Collegiate Scholars
  • Applying to Communications and human relations, second choice is writing and rhetoric in the COLA; the advisor said I should apply to my first choice school rather than trying to transfer later (she reviewed my transcripts and GPAs and told me I should apply so that should be positive, right?)
  • liberal arts currently because I chose to get my associates, but had begun on a communications BA previously so most of my electives are communication-related though they may not transfer for comm credit
  • Essays A & C

Not sure what else you need! I kind of stumbled upon this post and tried to pull all the info from other people that you’d need, but maybe I forgot something.

I am so nervous lol I have been working on my essays for like two - three months :frowning:

I am applying for computer science, is it ok if I wrote essay Topic A and essay Topic C only ?

@OGmandyV What is your overall college GPA? And how long ago did you take those classes. I think if it was longer than 10 years ago, then you should be ok.

@utcshopeful I’ve tried looking back to what your GPA is but I can’t find it. I don’t know what essays computer science requires, but I do know, it is VERY competitive. It has grown in recent years and right now they don’t have a whole lot of space. Some people say only write the two essays because it gives the admissions committee less to read, it won’t be as tedious, but others say do all three because it shows your dedication. I would call and ask admissions to double check with computer science though since it is so competitive. Sorry for the long-winded answer but that was the best explanation I could give.

is 950 words too long ?
@Thompson2688

same question about the words @awesomesauceness

@brandon33 added you to the list

@OGmandyV I added you to the list as a 3.7 gpa. However, if the grades you got with the 1.7 GPA were not longer than 10 years ago, you will not be eligible for Fresh Start (unless they recently changed it). UT Austin also does not consider classes that were retaken, so unfortunately they would look at both grades earned for the course and calculate your GPA with that.

@utcshopeful I am also applying for CS and I only wrote essays A and C. I don’t think writing more is necessary, because its more about quality over quantity. Don’t write crappy extra essays just to seem more dedicated, only put your best work. On the topic of word count, I said before that 500-750 would probably be recommended, but if you feel as if you need all 950 words to make the best essay you can then keep it. Otherwise, if you only wrote 950 words to make your essay seem longer and they don’t add any substance to the writing, I would probably trim it down.

@utcshopeful I have also noticed that you aren’t on the list for transfers. Would you like to be added to it? If so, could you post your stats here and I could add you. Right now its only me and Cs23305 for Computer Science :-< its so lonely

4.0 gpa/ 52 credit hours completed/ Very good EC’s (probably the strongest part of my application) / average to below average essays
