UT austin 2017/2018 Transfer Thread

does anyone know why when I went to fill out the scholarship application, it stills says my transfer gpa is a 0.0 with 0 credits ? I finished my application 4 days ago, but I submitted my transcript over 20 days ago

did yallā€™s application go into review ?

@utcshopeful MyStatus just says my application is complete. Is it supposed to change?

same here

@stoppingtheworld and @YungManZ I think itā€™s supposed to stay like that for a while. From what Iā€™ve read it wonā€™t go ā€œinto reviewā€ until around the middle of March. Thatā€™s because each individual college (in UT) has to get all the applications. To my knowledge there isnā€™t just one admissions committee, I think it varies from college to college (I might be wrong though).

@hayyu88 I know UT does something specific with AP credits, either they donā€™t count them at all or only count them towards your credits and donā€™t count them towards your GPA. My main question is, what is your cumulative GPA? Is it a 3.3 or is it something else. Lastly, you are all over the place, so, I canā€™t really say. Sorry for the inconclusiveness.

Hey everyone! I donā€™t see many Fine Arts applicants on here, so I thought Iā€™d go ahead and post my own stats just to see what my chances are:

  • Applying to COFA, B.F.A. in Design (second choice is the B.A. in Design)
  • Credit Hours: 60+ from UT Dallas, 33 being from AP credits that I've already accepted at UT Dallas (they show up on my transcript as specific courses)
  • after this semester, I'll have completed equivalencies for all 3 core studio classes that UT recommends be transferred in, but have not yet taken the 2 art history equivalences that are also recommended
  • GPA: 3.8 as of Fall 2017
  • Essays were decent, nothing too special but definitely not awful
  • 5 recommendation letters, 1 from an employer and 4 from Design/Fine Arts professors here at UT Dallas
  • Resume was pretty flashy, mostly from high school (awards, top 2% in my class, etc.), but I am also in an honors program here at UTD and an art-related organization
  • Portfolio was relatively strong, but it's hard for me to judge because I'm very critical of my work...

From what Iā€™ve read, I have pretty good chances of getting in, seeing as not many people apply to Fine Arts. I know it may be difficult to evaluate my chances since they say the portfolio is a big factor in admissions into COFA, but I figure thereā€™s no harm in posting anyway.

Thanks in advance for any help

@Thompson2688 Well I transferred so I have a 4.0 currently (the 3.3 was just from my first school but since I transferred it got wiped and replaced with my new one here) and I know, I know! Iā€™m all over the place and thatā€™s why Iā€™m concerned! Thank you for trying to help me!

@hayyu88 I didnā€™t have any issues with having transcripts from multiple schools; I spoke to an admissions counselor and she didnā€™t even blink at my multiple transcripts. I did use one essay to explain that while my previous schooling may look a bit haphazard, itā€™s because Iā€™m a person who enjoys taking risks to find more about myself.

Caveat/s: I am 30 years old, will be 31, and my credits were from 10+ years ago, so I could talk about how Iā€™ve matured as well. I qualified for an Academic Fresh Start (http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/index.cfm?objectid=6D10C9BD-DD24-153F-90B91DA6C20D1C97). I came at it from the point of view that I was younger and immature. The admissions counselor gave me a lot of pointers specific to my situation as an older student, but never said anything about attending multiple schools.

If I had to guess, the NCAA stuff could help as it shows you work well in a team, etc. How were your essays? Did you have the opportunity to explain what has transpired in the past couple of years in a positive manner? Iā€™ll be honest, Iā€™m just asking in hopes that someone more familiar with the app process has some helpful insightā€¦ I wish I had more information myself!

Also, I would say, if UT is your dream, donā€™t be afraid to try again. COLA has spring admissions too. If you donā€™t get in (though Iā€™m rooting for you!!!), speak to a counselor and ask what you can do to improve your chances when you apply again? Someone told me that some schools appreciate seeing a second-time applicant because it shows youā€™re committed to the school. That wasnā€™t UT specific though.

As transfer students, our paths are uniquely defined by past actions that, in my opinion, showcase our willingness to look at creative ways to accomplish our goals. Perhaps you didnā€™t apply as a freshman, or perhaps you did and didnā€™t get in, or whatever the case may be, these ā€œquirksā€ have led us to UT Austin, because we know it will better ourselves in the long-term. I think thatā€™s worth considering, even just for yourself.

Also, I am going to PM you (if I can figure out howā€¦ Iā€™m pretty new) and provide you with a name to reach out to should you need it in the future.

I hope this helps and I hope Iā€™m not talking out of my buttā€¦

@hayyu88 UT requires you to send ALL transcripts from any college you have attended and earned credit. This means that they will see your grades from the previous school and your 3.3 and 4.0 will be averaged out.

https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/transfer-admission#fndtn-t104-whats-required

"You must submit transcripts documenting any enrollment at a college, university or post-secondary school, including those at which you:

-Earned dual credit coursework while in high school
-Earned credit that was then transferred to another institution
-Were awarded credit through study abroad, especially if the study abroad program was handled through a third-party iā€“institution (not your home college/university)
-Enrolled in coursework but did not earn credit
-Are currently enrolled (If you are enrolled in courses at the time of the deadline, submit an updated transcript from your current college or university as soon as your grades are posted for this additional coursework, no later than June 1 [fall applicants] or Jan. 5 [spring applicants].)"

@awesomesaucee yep! I did all of that! Iā€™m just nervous if switching majors while trying to transfer is going to negatively affect my chances. I really only have maybe 54ish college earned credits, but have a total of 72 with AP credits, and I donā€™t want that huge number to cause them to be like ā€œwoah, thatā€™s way too many to consider transferring in withā€ you know?

@hayyu88 Switching majors while transferring shouldnā€™t affect your chances if some of the classes you need overlap and you have the pre-reqs done. Iā€™m also choosing a different major at UT than what I was studying at my previous university. As for your credits, 72 really isnā€™t that many. They state that they prioritize students with under 70 credits, but I have a feeling that some of your credits might not transfer to UT which would put you below 70 credits anyway, considering you are coming from an out-of-state public school. You shouldnā€™t worry at all. Iā€™ve seen people with 100+ credits and associates degrees get accepted.

@awesomesaucee gotcha. thank you! good luck to you!!

I assume no one has had a status change, like app in review or anything, but I thought Iā€™d ask anyway.

@OGmandyV nope

@rusalochkaa I figure itā€™s too soon, especially since you have through today to turn anything extra in, but Iā€™m anxious as Iā€™m sure we all are!

Past threads has seen applicants start going into review around March 10th

@awesomesaucee that is surprising and awesome!!! Thanks for that info!!

@awesomesaucee Do you know for what majors?
