UT austin 2017/2018 Transfer Thread

Mays also accepts more people (around 100 I think) where as McCombs only accepts 67ish

@Zeoxys My friend plans to transfer to Mays next year with expected 61 hours. Where do you see that 60 hours policyļ¼Ÿ

@rowennguyen First off, what is Mays? Is that the college of communication? Second, how did they already get rejected? Decisions donā€™t start rolling out until mid-April.

@Thompson2688 Mays Business School belongs to Texas A&M. They send out their decisions on what I would call a rolling basis.

@stoppingtheworld Ohhhhh gotcha. Thanks!

@Zeoxys donā€™t they keep some seats for transfer students? This is what I have heard from some students at Texas A&M. I donā€™t know if the Austin has the same plan or not

@1997Deadpool Just in general, most schools have ā€œas availableā€ seats open for transfer students.

If we think about it for a moment, first-year students apply first and get their decisions before any other type of student. I would argue that they get first dibs at any program in the university. Then come the students who have some sort of conditional acceptance plan with the school, if itā€™s possible. BTW - both A&M and UT have something like this. And last, but of course not least, we transfer students get out chance at admissions. By the time we get our applications reviewed, students have already confirmed housing, and sometimes registered for classes. The student capacity of the university is probably near complete by now. Yes, it may be possible for some schools to save a few seats for students, but I wouldnā€™t count on that to be significant.

Donā€™t let this discourage you. I am applying, lots of us are still applying because of course transfer students still get accepted.

I would argue that UT reserves some spots for transfer students. The ā€œCollege for All Texansā€ law really pushes for transfer students and allowing credits to seamlessly transfer from community colleges to 4-year universities. Weā€™ve also seen schools like UT and A&M form partnerships with nearby community colleges (You can find a page on UTā€™s website with the exact classes to take at Austin Community College by major if you want to transfer to UT).

It would also be in the schools best interest to accept more transfers because, historically, community colleges enroll more minorities than 4 year schools and accepting these students would increase diversity numbers.

By looking at past Common Data Sets, UT admits about the same amount of students every year as transfers (3200-3500). I think it would be difficult to admit almost the same amount of students every year if it was variable and based on how many people drop out, etc.

@Zeoxys me and both my friends are transferring as freshmens so we have around just 30 hours each

Hello!

I also applied for Fall 2018 for Mccombs. With a 3.833 GPA.
However, Iā€™m currently kinda struggling with my spring semester classes right now (probably going to end up with a few Bā€™s). Does anybody know how much they look at your spring semester outcome, even though you already sent in your transcript and everything? Will it effect my admission decision if they see my gpa dropping ?

@misskatherine I am right there with you. I think I will get 2 out of 5 Bā€™s this semester.

@misskatherine
If you have over 24 hrs when you applied and have all the pre-reqs completed (M 408K, M 408L, ECO 304K, ECO 304L), UT will not take into consideration your spring grades

However if you are under 24 hours when you applied and/or taking any pre-reqs, UT will require you to send in a spring transcript showing your successful completion of the course. Your gpa will also be readjusted accordingly.

On the side note, the reason why it takes McCombs so long to release decisions is because of the pre-reqs.
Peopleā€™s gpaā€™s can fall or rise dramatically, especially if youā€™re a first yr college student.
For example, a student who made a 3.75 first semester because of 1 B in a 4 hr class (lets say M 408K) has ZERO chance of getting into McCombs. However if he/she were to make a 4.0 next semester, he/she would have a 3.875 which would make him competitive for admission into McCombs, atleast from a gpa standpoint.

As with all competitive transfer majors, McCombs waits until they can compare everyone before making decisions.
The applicants who have over 24 hrs and all the pre-reqs completed are looked at and scored accordingly based on their gpa, essays, and resume. However that doesnā€™t mean too much until you can compare all the other applicants which will be in late may and even early June.

On the converse side, majors like CS in CNS donā€™t have any strict/absolute pre-reqs.
Just ā€œrecommended courses that they should be takingā€. Some of these people will hear back in literally 2 weeks lol (mid April at the earliest)

Also I know Iā€™ve reiterated this many times but be cognizant that dual credit that you took in high schoo or any classes you took at a local community college factors into your external transfer gpa.

I know a student last year that was applying to McCombs who made a 4.0 both semesters but made 1 A, 2 Bā€™s and a C while taking dual credit courses in high school.

He had an overall transfer gpa of 3.72 which had zero chance of gaining admission into McCombs. Had McCombs only assessed his academic performance in college, he would have been almost guaranteed into McCombs

I would just like to clarify Texas A&Mā€™s 60 transferable hours strict policy. It is not the case that if you have more than 60 hours you are not admitted, it is just that they choose the most relevant 60 hours and that is the maximum they can take. (I know this because I know people who have been admitted with far more than 60 credit hours but only 60 are transferred over).

I spoke to the senior admissions counselor last week about initiating the fresh start program to get rid of two classes from the fall of 2008. Even though I was unable to do it she assured me that my positive trend over the last two years (4.0 with high level math and eng physics courses completed) will hold up over classes from 10 years ago. She also told me to contact her when I get my decision and that if I was denied that she would get me into UT with an appeal.

Also, to any other CS applicants, a friend from ACC got into CS with a 3.6 GPA. And Iā€™m sure everyone on this thread will be accepted. Happy Easter. Hope these last couple of weeks go by fast for everyone

@jumpo69 i hope your right, everyone in this thread seems super talented

Happy Easter guys, I pray we all get accepted, but I know that will not be the case. Donā€™t lose hope though! Wilder things have happened in the past

@Zeoxys I think you just told me my worst nightmare. I was not aware of the community college/dual credit effects my transfer gpa too. For my current school at UTA, it does not effect my gpa grade (simply a pass or fail). Now, that I just found this out, my GPA is absolutely trash. Iā€™m shocked I didnā€™t know this the whole time.
I canā€™t believe I messed up this badly. I worked really hard this pass 2 years to be able to apply for transfer into Mccombs. and now Itā€™s all for nothing.
Does anybody recommend any plan B options. I still want to get into UT, maybe not into the business school, because itā€™s seems impossible at this point. Iā€™m finishing my sophomore year this semester.

@Zeoxys Hey man, how do you like A&M? Is it not giving the opportunities that you were hoping for and whatā€™s your overall impression, also whatā€™s your major?

I applied last year to UT with a 3.90 and had everything complete by the spring semester, only one B In Cal 1, finished Cal 2 by spring with an A which I sent transcript for. I remember you in thread last year. Also A&M didnā€™t accept as I didnā€™t have Cal 2 by the time I applied. I got accepted to econ at both and decided to go UH. I got accepted to A&M this year and Iā€™m not hopeful about UT, I also got a B- in biology ( idk why I took it smh) last semester and my gpa is down to a 3.82 currently.

Thinking about going to A&M if UT doesnt work out. Just wanted to ask your thoughts? I hope you get in btw!

@misskatherine Your only option to get into McCombs with a low GPA would to be to transfer into a less competitive major at UT, achieve a 3.9+ GPA at UT, and then transfer internally. Keep in mind that acquiring that high of GPA at UT is pretty difficult.
