UT Austin Class of 2021 Thread

@Glee I honestly was never interested in TAMU so I never looked in depth at their transferring details or programs. I would think because UTD is a well ranked university in the computer science area that transferring from UTD to TAMU wouldn’t be too difficult either. The main thing to focus on is grades no matter what school you transfer as well as having a calculus credit. UT almost made me apply as a transfer for fall 2017 due to graduating early and my dual credit hours so I got the entire run down of what they look for and they did say its the same at almost all universities, in your case TAMU.

Small wave today maybe??

Really.

Bless you @warrior101x

We’ve thought about doing a year at UTD and transferring if needed. In some ways, it’s a better option for us because he can establish residency again by living in our TX house, which helps tremendously with tuition costs. But, in other ways it’s not the best option for him. He already has established friends in Dallas as well as extended family. It’s hard to break into the social scene when you lose that Freshman year when everyone is in the same boat. Part of the experience is networking and Dallas is a great option for his industry for internships. So I don’t know if it makes sense to transfer. Since he’s an IB student, he has to go to a place that will accept those credits that he busted his butt to get. Otherwise, I’d just have him burn a year at Community College to save $ while he takes courses that he can ace to bolster that resume a bit. Plus, moving to 3 different places in 5 years is asking a lot of him.

For us, Dallas is great because we have someone to be a caretaker of our TX house in exchange for free rent. We’re already paying a mortgage for a few more years, so might as well get some use out of it. The plan was to let the kids live in the house while they cut through the entry level positions to set them up for the future when they could get their own place. Then we’ll use the house in our retirement and keep our beach house in NY for summers/kids/grandkids/etc. The cost of living in NY is too high to be sustainable.

Anyway, I’m off on a tangent. Ultimately, it will be his decision. As long as he’s happy, we’ll support and fund it. I do, however, have a suspicion that he will change majors at some point. So I won’t deny that I’m pulling for UT to accept him provided that he concentrates on a different area.

@spankytoes, I agree New York is too expensive and quality of life is much better in Texas !

We can barely down a house and some people are having multiple houses. =)) I’m doneee

@AngelFoxtrot It’s a bit deceptive. Wife and I got married at 20/21 because she got pregnant with our potential future UT student. (Well, not really “why”, but you get the picture) We bought a house in 2001 with a little help from our families and paid a little extra on it each month. Re-Financed a few years ago to shave 7 years off the note. So we’ll own it free and clear in about 6 years. When we decided to relocate, it seemed silly to lose that asset, and our mortgage was low enough that we found a way to absorb it so that our sons could get a leg up starting out. I think the note, insurance and utilities are maybe $1200 a month. So it’s not terrible. I travel to Dallas a lot for work, so we get some use out of it. Pretty much the same as a timeshare would be without all those date restrictions.

Definitely not “rich”. Our house in NY cost more than 3X as much for less space and 1 more bedroom.

@EmpirestateDad No doubt. It costs me $403.00 a month to take the LIRR and the 2/3 subway to the FiDi for work. That doesn’t take into account car payments, insurance, gas and parking to get to the train station. Taxes aren’t terrible in our area, but the quality of life is still much better in Texas. I always tell people NYC has my soul, but Texas has my heart.

@spankytoes, I’m not a minimalist but am getting frustrated with tiny apt living in NYC. Looking to move, depending on where my d gets admitted

@EmpirestateDad I hear you. When I moved up 3 years ago, I lived in Midtown Manhattan because I didn’t have enough research on where the good areas were in Queens/Brooklyn. My rent for a tiny apartment on 56th between 8th and 9th was $3,100/mth. My roommate had the true bedroom and I had the converted space. To boot, he is a member of a famous 1970’s disco-era band whose lifestyle doesn’t involve “wife and kids”. (Great guy!) When the wife moved up to join me, we lived in Jersey City/Hoboken for 7 months on a sublet until we bought a house out in Long Beach. Then we moved the kids and my MIL up since the school year was completed. Was a rough 16 months being scattered. Even rougher financially as I had to hustle to contribute towards 2 households. Lots of Netflix and free trips to Central Park on the weekends

Love it and hate it at the same time. I think I would have enjoyed it more in my 20’s instead of mid-late 30’s. I was too spoiled with living in Texas. Wish we could stay closer to my son, but the world is much smaller these days than when I was in school and Jetblue flies JFK-AUS direct.

My son received a letter today for engineering honor program with scholarship, we are very excited!!! We are under impression that it is very difficult to get scholarship, very glad that UT appreciate my son’s qualification !

@TexasFootball Congrats on the Eng. Honors Program. My daughter is still waiting and hoping.

@TexasFootball --CONGRATS on the acceptance and the scholarship!

@TexasFootball Wow. Congrats!

Has Summer 2017 Housing Application opened for any of you non-admits in the Housing portal?

I just watch the thread of last year. Most people get their decision on feb 20.
