EVERYONE QUESTION!!!
I applied in state, not auto admit, and I applied to Mccombs as first choice and pre public relations second choice.
Here’s my question - is it possible for me to get into the school, but just get into my second choice major?
OR would they just reject me if they didn’t think I was fit for mccombs? Any help appreciated.
Chance for CNS: Biochemistry
Top 11% (class size of almost 700)
ACT: 33 (33 E, 33 M, 30 R, 34 S)
Decent essays and resume
Been waiting for a long time, hopefully tomorrow’s the day…
@nduclaunc that is the point of the second major. If they deem you good enough to accept, they can deny you entry into McCombs and then offer you entry into your second choice. Good luck!
@crunge17 thank you!!! Making sure.
I was under the impression that UT did not take second majors into account for non auto-admit students. Where did you get this information?
“When you apply, you’ll be instructed to select both a first- and second-choice major. We will consider you for admission based on these selections, with foremost consideration given to the major you identify as your first choice.” That is the from UT Austin website, I was confused at first as well but they DO in fact consider both. @deluxan
@kats1234 Well I’m glad to hear that. Thank you for the elaboration.
So tomorrow’s the day. Good luck to everyone, I hope you all get the result you want
Chance me please!
Major: Comp Sci
Rank: 39/554
SAT (New): 1430 (690R, 740M)
Pretty good essays, decent resume
Just wanted to say good luck to everyone who is still waiting. I hope all your wishes come true tomorrow!
“The only way you can gain admission and not your first choice major, in the vast majority of cases, is if you are a Texas resident automatically admitted under state law. Otherwise, it is basically first choice or bust.”- Kevin Martin (UT Admissions Guy)
@deluxan that may be true in most cases (I can’t speak to most cases) but I know it is not absolutely true. I wish I understood how it worked, but I don’t. We were also told that UT Fine Arts would not even consider you if they were not your first choice. But my son put music second and still passed the pre-screen and was invited for an interview. Who knows? The whole second-choice-major thing seems to be a black box.
Really? No one is a “UT Admissions Guy” unless verified by CC and their status (located beneath username) indicates this verification was performed. Be wary of anyone who claims to have inside admission information and chooses not to get verified by CC.
I think they were referring to the YouTube channel “UT Admissions Guy” who (used to?) work in UT admissions, not a user on CC.
I thought that it was possible to be accepted to the school with an alternate major like with other schools? I applied engineering first choice which I know is a long shot but I was hoping to at least be accepted to the regular school. Here are my stats
OOS massachusetts
33 ACT
7 honors / AP
Strong extracurriculars student government, robotics club, lots of work experience and others. I also had strong essays, but GPA is low however at 3.3 unweighted. We don’t have class rank. Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks so much!
@CollegeParent123 The UT Admissions Guy does Youtube videos, he seems to know what he’s talking about, I would hope he’s not out there fooling people. I guess you never know though. He says on his first video he is a former undergraduate admissions counselor for UT
He was on CC–my point exactly.
@CollegeParent123 He’s verified on a subreddit called applyingtocollege . He’s a moderator there along with many other verified admission officers.
When he joined College Confidential, he was relatively new and took the opportunity to answer and correct many misconceptions about the admissions process. Unfortunately someone reported him, and he was banned swiftly. He was banned by a bot, and then an actual moderator on CC looked at the situation and quickly unbanned him. Since then he has been discouraged from coming back to this site due to the initial feedback from a few users.
He has an entire blog, Youtube, and frequents reddit about admissions in college. I advise to actually look at his blog and Youtube channel as he provides actual info as he was a previous UT admissions counselor.
@honeynut12 he seems like he’s telling the truth and knows a lot about the whole process.
