Transcripts have to come directly from the high school (otherwise they could be open to altering), hence the reason for “sealed envelop with school seal”. How you were able to gain admittance by uploading your transcript yourself is beyond me and actually quite amazing. Now, aside from that fact, as far as I know, once you are admitted you are done with having to worry about dropping out of top 7%. Just don’t fail your classes.
@lavastorm --you are incorrect. You CAN upload a PDF of an official transcript. D did it and was accepted a few weeks letter so I can verity it IS allowed. There is a detailed description on the UT website about how to do it but I’ll cut and paste:
"Document Upload System
If TREx is not available, submit a copy of your official transcript using the Document Upload System, or you may use the system to ask someone to submit the transcript to us on your behalf. The uploaded document must be a digital scan or PDF version of an official transcript. (Be sure to include both the front and back!) Any document labeled “unofficial,” grade reports or advising reports, photos (i.e., images taken with a smartphone) and screen shots are not acceptable.
Track upload status by logging in to the Document Upload System. "
We were actually quite pleased with the ease of doing this. It is a major hassle to get transcripts from my kids school since ours insists on NOT mailing transcripts and they also mysteriously do not participate in the TREx system. We had an official transcript, scanned it in and uploaded it in just a few minutes.
Being an auto admit applicant in the UT system was a breath of fresh air—so easy now that D is at the tail end of all the work. Now to just wait for the major decisions!
ETA: are you a parent or a student?
Wow, my mistake. I should have looked it up before commenting. I was going off of history and the ability to falsify a transcript is amazingly easy in this day and age. Photoshop will make it quite easy to get in now. I am stunned that UT allows unofficial transcript uploads.
@lavastorm --no worries! I’ve done something similar before.
I’m thinking they do somehow verify it with the school? They would have to I imagine,
It has to be an official transcript. You can’t upload an unofficial of. They require the front and the back for that reason. Transcripts are usually printed on watermark paper and the watermark shows up on the scan. There is usually an official stamp or seal as well. This is not new. It has been allowed before this year.
It’s still easy to photoshop.Heck, send me your transcript and I will turn your low grades to high As to prove a point.
@lavastorm Stop worrying about photoshopping. All schools verify grades before students start. Photoshopping for admissions is pointless.
@lavastorm all that will happen is you waste your money on fees and take someone else’s spot.
You must send an official signed and sealed final transcript through mail. If they don’t match exactly, your admission will be revoked.
Okay, I am horribly scared now. My school’s transcript doesn’t have watermark paper. It’s just printed on two sheets of copy paper. It does have the signature of my counselor, if that means anything? Would UT contact me if it requires a sealed envelope version or is it a given that we must all send in a sealed copy alongside the scan one? If it is a given, then no wonder I’m consistently getting 500s on the Reading + Verbal section. Our school stamp is literally two lines in bold, black ink in Times New Roman saying “OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT” and the school name on the next line. I never knew HS transcripts come with fancy watermarks.
@AngelFoxtrot They take a scanned/uploaded copy for application. (Honor code, you clicked something along the way that all your information is true.) Once you accept the offer, they only take the sealed envelope version after you graduate as the proof of final HS grades. (If this does not agree with uploaded version, the admission can get revoked.)
So don’t worry for now.
@AngelFoxtrot you are fine.As I just learned, scanned transcripts are fine, as they will confirm with official transcript later after graduation. You are good!
Alright then, we shall now transition to the real worrying - the “We’re not sure about your major yet” worrying. How does a 1320 new SAT stand for Computer Engineering? I am auto admit, involved in a moderate amount of extra curriculars, like Quizbowl, Science Olympiad, and the such. A few hours of those per week. I’m also poor (4 member household, 30k-45k bracket, just scraped the lower end) and first gen college student. Also, I’m doing two STEM courses at my CC this semester. This year, I’ve begun to actually do volunteering for the first time. Essays are definitely subpar. A few grammatical errors in each of them. None of those errors obscure the message tho. How do I stack up for an engineering major?
@AngelFoxtrot …did you apply for the Texas Advance scholarship by chance? You are the perfect candidate. If not, you need to do it like…TODAY! (rooting you on!)

@carachel2 I have plans to do a massive scholarship application spree this Thanksgiving, and yes, Texas Advance is on the giant list I have compiled. Chance me also, overly stressed high school senior who can’t do anything significant is asking for a prediction.
As for a chance–I’m an Aggie who doesn’t know much about UT Engineering so take it with a grain of salt:
-your auto admit / in-state status will go a long way
-your SAT is solid, but not on the higher side so that may make it a bit iffy
-your first generation status will help (are you URM?)
-your science and math competitions will look great
For Texas Advance: I just went back and looked and to me it looks like all you have to do is apply for admission and have the income requirement. I’m low key excited for you!
@carachel2 I’m Asian and okay, I guess I can fill it out some time today. I’m not URM because Asians have a strong presence in any educational environment. This’ll probably kill my chances because expectations are usually higher for Asians right?
https://admissions.utexas.edu/afford/scholarships/texas-advance
It looks like I already applied, my application is complete as of yesterday and I have submitted the FAFSA right when it opened.
@AngelFoxtrot …my bad, sorry…It looks like you don’t have to do anything but apply for admission AND submit the FAFSA. Have you done that?
(sorry to be annoying)
@carachel2 I did both, not to worry. I’m probably going to fill out the Texas Exes sometime this week because they all seem to have rolling consideration I see…
I just realized that somehow in the process of copying and pasting my essay into the essay box, “me” mysteriously changed to “be” for Essay A. Boohoo. My Word document has “me.” Well this blows. At least everything else is in order. It’s a 700 word essay and that error is near the end. The admission guys will probably put down my essay after the 250 word mark. Lol.
I’m apply for Electrical Engineering.
I’m top 9% but not top 7%. (59/667).
New SAT(Out of 1600): 1470
Math: 800
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 670
Lots of extracurricular activities. All Pre-AP, AP, and dual credit classes.
What are my chances?
