UT Austin ECE vs. Georgia Tech Honors EE

Hi,

I've recently been admitted to both UT for electrical and computer engineering, and Georgia Tech for electrical engineering. Both schools are highly ranked in this field of study, but I was accepted to Georgia Tech's Honors program which I believe is fairly prestigious and rejected from UTs Engineering Honors Program. Between the schools, which seems like the best option for me at this stage? (Note: I receive in-state tuition at UT and out of state for Georgia Tech).

What do you plan to do after graduation? Industry, grad school, research? The Georgia Tech position is more prestigious, but UT ECE certainly opens all doors for you. If you plan on going into industry then I think it’d be pretty silly to pay OOS tuition at Georgia Tech when you have such a great option in UT. Many of my ECE friends make enough money off of summer internships to pay off their tuition. When you include scholarship money, they have enough income to graduate with new money IN the bank. Going to Georgia Tech OOS would probably spell graduation with debt – not worth the marginal step up in prestige if you ask me.
Another thing to consider is that Georgia Tech, while strong in “tech” fields, is weak in other disciplines. If you want to take liberal arts or other non-science classes, UT will better serve your needs. Just something to think about.

I love Georgia Tech (two of my relatives are graduates), but UT-Austin is an excellent school for engineering too. True, GT is amazing but your salary coming out of UT is not likely to be much lower, if at all, than GT. Unless you can afford GT without student loan debt, I would say go to Austin.
