Hi yall,
I’m a sophomore at a small christian school in VA-
School doesnt have any APs (some college classes, but not many)
GPA: 4.06 (i can pull my GPA up prbly to 4.18 nxt yr)
Class rank: 9 out of 200
ACT: planning to take it Nxt fall
EC/Community service: Not much…
1 yr marching band (percussion leader)
1 yr orchestra
2 yr teaching at local korean school
Lots of volunteer/community services (but most of them r church works)
Well, as you can see my stats arent good, and is there any chance that i will get in to McCombs?
( i know its little to late to start preparing for those ‘top schools’ when im a rising junior… but still)
And what Extracurricular activities should i be involved in? (just examples)
I am NOT athletic, so I cannot do any sports obviously…
My ECs are all related to music, and since Im applying for business school,
I think i need something else that can actually help me on my app.
Oh and Im an int. student & not that great at English yet…
i really need you guys’ advices!! UT austin McCombs is my dream school and I would do anything
to get into that school… i know i sound stupid cuz my stats r horrible and i dont even have ACT scores…
but i would really appreciate it if yall can give me some advices on what I should do, and how well i should do on ACT and everything . Thank yall! (:
Admission to McCombs is very, very competitive. Depending upon your test scores, you probably will have a lottery ticket chance of admissions but it is unwise for anybody OOS to bank on entry to UT-Austin as Plan A. Is that GPA out of 4, 5, or 6? If anything other than 4, you will not be admitted under any circumstances. Don’t fixate on McCombs, as your chances as a non-Texas resident are more unlikely than likely even if the GPA is on a 4-point scale and you ace the ACT.
Thanks! (: its out of 4. And I’m planning to apply for McCombs summer program (DYNAMC- for high school students) next Summer, do you think it would be competitive? I cannot find any info about their summer program other than on their website. @sltxdad
You do know that HS program attendance doesn’t give you any leg up in admissions, right?
McCombs is part of a public university designed to serve the students of the state of Texas. First, 75% of the freshman class is filled automatically by the top 7% of very high school class. Then, the academic admits ( top 10% with awesome scores). Then only can OOS applicants be considered, and first would be athletes, second legacies, third international and OOS students. So, essentially, the odds of being admitted from OOS if you’re not a legacy are virtually nonexistent.
What do you like in McCombs? We can look at those characteristics and suggest similar universities where you have actual odds of admission.
@"Erin’s Dad" yes- well the reason i want to apply for the summer program is because i want to learn more about accounting (cuz i want to major in it) and thats how I got to know about McCombs and how good their accounting program is. I want to apply for it cuz im really interested in that program! (It was the only summer program i could find thats related to accounting major) .
@MYOS1634 I want to major in accounting. (: Thank you
There are lots of excellent accounting programs on great campuses that don’t have a cap on admissions. We’ll help you find them, the CC community is awesome at finding colleges.
I don’t know why people are saying it is virtually impossible to get into mccombs OOS. I know a few kids from my school as a whole who have gotten in with decent but not insane stats. I feel like your chances are pretty good in my opinion, and don’t see a reason why you would not be accepted. Also why are you saying your stats are awful? look pretty good to me.
thanks for the comment! @SternBusiness I guess ill have to work way harder (: do you know of any other schools that have good accounting programs?
it’s a high reach due to the cap - meaning the odds are minuscule, but it’s possible 2 kids got in from someone’s HS. They may have been legacies though, no one knows the full exact applications.
Notre Dame, Wharton, USC…But those are as hard as McCombs to get into.
Otherwise, you have Bentley, Bryant, Baruch, SUNY Bing, Pace, SUNY Geneseo, …
Are UIUC, Lehigh, Indiana U Bloomington also really hard to get in? @MYOS1634 Sorry I feel like Im asking yall a bunch of questions…
Notre dame, Wake Forest USC, UIUC are all possibilities for you. Otherwise Ohio State, Penn State and U wisconsin also have good accounting programs.
@SternBusiness Thank you!
No, UIUC is notorious for NOT having a cap on OOS enrollment, nor Indiana.
The issue then becomes whether you can qualify for merit aid there (ACT/SAT will be crucial). If not, you woudln’t be eligible for financial aid.
thank you. (: isnt it hard to get into their business school though? since UIUCs accounting is ranked top 2 in the nation, and Indiana is 8th ( i think) do i still have a chance? and would an ACT score above 30 be considered good enough?
UIUC has no OOS cap and in fact loves OOS students for the money they bring (since they pay a lot more than instate students AND receive no financial aid).
I think Indiana has merit aid for ACT 30, check under “merit scholarships/OOS”
