Theoretically, would a 3.03 be too low of a cumulative GPA in order to an instate transfer to UT Austin’s COLA for a Government major? Does UT care about upward trends?
I know the average UT transfer GPA is a 3.48 but I was hoping that the average is skewed by transfers into super competitive majors like engineering and computer science. Am I right in thinking that maybe the college of liberal arts is more lenient?
I am looking to apply to COLA government as well. I have been researching this extensively. The average transfer GPA for COLA in fall 2016 was slightly above 3.6.
Most people that have gotten in in the past have 3.5-4.0 range.
I have seen a few 3.4 and one 3.1. I think you need to get it up to at least a 3.4-3.5 before a real chance at being admitted, but you miswell try now too right?
@masterblitz71 even COLA is more lenient come pare to other majors, they still need at least 3.5 to make it. i just applied for COLA as well. you can spend this semester bringing your GPA and try, there’s a quite a gap between 3.03 and 3.5 so make sure you get all A’s this semester so you have a higher chance
Can someone chance me?
I currently attend Texas Tech University and I got CAP last year during my senior year.

My first essay I wrote about how going to the Philippines and volunteering at the orphanage there last summer really made me want to become a nurse, and my second essay was a letter to myself about my personal struggles that I overcame to make me who I want to be. I’m currently in 4 extracurricular clubs in college, and I had 2 LORs, one from my Philosophy teacher here at Tech and one from my high school dance director (I was the head officer my Senior year). I had over 100 hours of observing and 100 hours of volunteering my senior year and over the summer.
I’m just really nervous because the School of Nursing is very hard to get into!
This would mean so much if y’all could help!
I applied to the Government program at UT Austin this semester as well and I have a 3.4 from Texas A&M. I have a lot of extra-curricular activities and several letters of recommendation, but I really butchered the second essay topic so I’m not confident in my chances of admission. Best of luck to you in your application and I hope it leads to your acceptance. - Aggie
It depends on what college you are at now; if you are at a peer college or above, then it will be fine. However, if you are transferring with anything below a 3.4 from commuter or community college, then you should rethink your decision on coming to the flagship school in Texas trying to compete with the best students in the state.
Also, to be blunt with you, asking to transferring with a 3.0 from anything below a peer college, is like asking to be accepted into a top college with a 80 pt. average from 4 years of high school.
