UT Austin vs USC

So USC is 60k and UT austin is 40-45k (OOS). I'm going for CS and I'd rather go to USC but it's #11 for CS compared to UT which is #8. What do you guys suggest?

The University of Texas is a business school powerhouse - I graduated from there and for the past 20 years, I can’t tell you how many opportunities this degree attracted. Austin is an unbelievable city with a very unique funkiness. You will love it there!

So no merit not FAid at either?

USC business school has a mentoring program that it’s students can participate in, where they are paired with a mentor. They also flew some of their business students to NY for interviews. Our friend’s S who got a USC finance and chem E BS, plus a masters had his pick of jobs every summer and from SR year and since graduating.

I’m not that interested in Business and I’m set on Computer Science (CS). And no merit aid for either @himom

My kid went to USC in CS. It is really expensive and they are always charging you for something else like lab fees for computer science when you are in the major. That part of LA is not that safe and living wise Austin would be far superior. As far as the Trojan Connection they keep talking about-it has not really been much of a help. One good thing at USC is class size. I found the faculty was not helpful at usc when academic issues came up and the disabled/student assistance dept was no help what so ever.

If the cost of USC is not an issue then 3 ranking spots is not enough reason to change your preference.

@Futureholds‌ thanks for the help!

@JAMCAFE‌ cost isn’t an issue, but I want to have ops for internships. And in the event I switch to CS in iBanking, the school should help me give a leverage.

I think I’ll go with UT Austin, unless someone convinces me USC is better. I also hear about the Trojan Connection a lot and honestly, that’s what making me like USC. Also another thing is that my school has never heard of UT, whereas USC is of the likes of UCLA and Cal in terms of prestige.

where are you from?

UT. Cheaper for you and higher ranked. You will love Austin.

Our S majored in EE. He was in Viterbi and I believe he found the engineering job fairs helpful. He was able to get internship and job offers. He was also able to do research in his department during the school year. Our kids lived on or near campus the entire time they attended USC and D still lives near campus. If you live near campus, it is pretty safe.

Since CS in in the engineering school I think having an internship and career center devoted to engineering students is extremely helpful. My son’s two internships (after soph and JR years), gave him credit for two years of experience when he was in job interviews, according to interviewers, which was a huge help in getting job offers SR year.

S was able to participate in job fairs from early freshmen year. One thing S liked was that there were a lot of women in USC engineering. (This year, 38% women.) He had women in his study group and research team. They also have an annual engineering formal ball. He was encouraged to pursue other interests–rock climbing, geology, ultimate (frisbee), and sailing.

Also was happy we could use the payment plan, to spread payments out over 10 months and put everything on charge card, that we paid as so in as statement arrived.

Don’t know anything about UT.

@HImom‌ how is the entrepreneurship/startup vibe at USC? Also can any UT fellows can answer this?

My main reason for going to UT is because Austin is basically another Silicon Valley. By staying closer to that bubble the startup vibe would be more, say, hip, there.

@Futureholds‌ Cali

@Lizardly‌ I know I’ll love Austin, such an amazing place. But again I’m looking at the potential to switch to iBanking, and Austin would not help in that case (although it would help for startups).

“Also another thing is that my school has never heard of UT, whereas USC is of the likes of UCLA and Cal in terms of prestige.”

This is the first time I’ve heard of someone from the United States that had never heard of UT. We have the most famous athletics program in the country, one of the top 10 biggest student bodies in the country, a presidential library, and our own national 24 hour TV station.

@MavsFan41‌ Not someone, basically almost my whole school. They were a bit taken back at first lolol so I had to convince them that it’s an awesome school.
