Hello everyone! I'll be a senior in high school next year and I have trouble deciding which major to select. Clearly, I have to decide which school I will list as my top choice on ApplyTexas. I am in-state and have automatic admission into UT, and consider myself as a somewhat competitive applicant for the honors programs. Throughout high school, I've taken a scientific route, having taken 2 AP sciences my junior year (Physics B and Chemistry) and being involved in some scientific ECs (Science NHS officer, Research). I still am very interested in pursuing a business career, yet I feel that my chances for BHP are relatively low because I have not done any business related things such as DECA or FBLA. Seeing as it is too late to start those kinds of activities, should I just choose engineering as my top choice? I feel that my chances for engineering honors are much better. Yet, if I put Business at number one and then only get into the regular business school, I won't be able to apply for engineering honors. I realize that there's not much of a difference between the honors and regular program, and that both are very competitive, but it has always been one of my goals. Do kids who don't have any business related activities still get into McCombs honors? Thanks for the help!

You’re in a much better spot than I am if you are worrying about honors, I know I wouldn’t even have a shot! Now what comes next may not be very helpful but it was the determining factor in my case when I made the choice between Engineering and Business. You can get an MBA with an engineering degree but you can’t get your masters in engineering with a business degree.

First just because you get an engineering degree and start out in an engineering job, does not mean you can’t get into the business side of things. Many people do. Which do you like the best? I would go with that. Also there is a Business Foundations Program you can take through McCombs. This is for non-business majors to effectively minor in business. So engineers can take this 7 course program and get a Business Certificate, which is effectively a minor. This may be the best of both worlds for you.

Thanks DoIHaveAnyChance and texansfan1 for your helpful advice. Actually, I read on the engineering website that “preference is given to first choice engineering majors” for honors, which indicates that you can put business as first choice, but at risk of decreasing your chances of getting in. I guess now I have to decide which engineering I want to apply for! And just a general question, do you have to indicate the same first choice major for every school on ApplyTexas?
