My daughter has been accepted to both UT McCombs and BC. She wants to study International Business. I would be interested in opinions from other parents, students or graduates from either school. We are not US residents so cost will be out of state either way. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

UT will still be cheaper, and as long as she has no problem working in Texas, McCombs will be a much better option

Thanks Wavylays94. I dont think she would have any issue working in Texas. Is UT viewed as more of a Texas/Regional college from a recruiting point of view?

Texas isn’t really a regional college from a recruiting point of view. Almost every major company does a lot of business in Texas though because of the pro-business policies. In the state of Texas, it doesn’t get much better for job opportunities than for a Longhorn. Obviously Rice is much more prestigious on a national scale, but it doesn’t have the same type of networking as UT does. … Really I guess I’m saying that there isn’t any reason to look for work outside of Texas in Dallas/Houston/Austin/San Antonio/Fort Worth etc. etc., those are the places you’ll get recruited by coming out of college. If you wanted to leave Texas though, UT has a pretty great reputation, although perhaps not as weighty in the Northeast as BC due to proximity.

BC is probably like the 5th best school in Boston ALONE, so it will be a lot harder for a BC grad to find work locally than it will be for a UT grad.

Thanks wavylays. I wonder how the social aspect compares in both schools. I know UThas 6th st and all that and BC is a little outside Boston. Maybe a quieter life at BC?

BC gets national recruiting though it’s strength will be from Boston through Washington DC. Texas is a very good school though, due to proximity, it’s greatest recruiting strength will be Dallas and the southeast. This isn’t a knock against either school, generally speaking the majority of graduates stay close to the “mothership” making alumni networks strongest close to home.

Texas is a massive school. BC is about half the size student-wise. Boston is the ultimate college city. With seemingly countless universities in the area the city is geared toward students. BC sits on the edge of the city and is quieter than UT. That said, my third favorite college town (after Boston and Ann Arbor) is Austin.

As an alum of BC’s business school I will take issue with the idea that’s it’s the 5th best school in Boston. At worst it’s third and that’s because 1 & 2 (Harvard & MIT) are two of the best in the world.

Both schools are excellent. Both will prepare your daughter very well for the business world. Texas will get her better access to the energy industry, BC is very strong with the investment industry. Both do very well in high-tech. To me it comes down to where she wants to first work after graduation and what size college environment she’s most comfortable with?

I appreciate the input. I had been told that the internship opportunities/program in BC was better, or at least better supported by the college than the UT program. I am talking about internship/placements during school years. My concern about UT is the size overall but i guess McCombs is only a small community withing the larger UT institution.
