UTD 2014 AES Scholarship

I’m not sure if it’s too late. I think they would give scholarships until they ran out of the money to do so. I actually don’t think I wrote the optional essay. You can submit the application and hope for an AES scholarship, but I’m not sure about chances. Let’s say that there is still a chance. Then your extracurriculars/awards/etc better be top notch. There’s your firepower. Good luck!

I sent in my application Dec 1 and was admitted soon afterwards (auto admit) but I’m really confused by this AES scholarship thing. There wasn’t a separate application was there? I haven’t received any info on it via email, and the Galaxy Portal is next to impossible to navigate. Would I be eligible for such a scholarship?
GPA- UW: 3.6 W: 4.6
SAT- 2240
ACT- 35
National Merit Commended
Great EC

Anyone admitted before March 1 can get one; your complete admissions application is what they consider for AES.

It’s definitely not too late (anyone admitted before March 1 is considered), and I wrote the optional essay for UTD just because I had already written that essay for another school that required that topic. Based on your test scores, you have a very high chance of getting the Honors Scholarship, what are your ECs?

@gxmmibxxr When did you apply? Because they haven’t reviews any applicants that applied after Dec. 1st.

@thephilosophertv I applied and got accepted in September. I actually may have a separate issue on why they didn’t send me anything - I was born in Canada, so I have to send in proof of my US citizenship. I wasn’t notified of this until around the time people started getting AES notifications. Hopefully I’ll get one after that’s worked out.

@onion123‌ I don’t know if you were talking about me, but stuff like leadership positions in band, Interact, 3yrs of volunteering over the summer, Global awards in DI, Regional awards in debate and science bowl, state awards in science fair, extensive shadowing of doctors, etc.

Would it be too forward to call them and ask?

Does anyone know how heavily they weigh ECs? On balance, I would think that my ECs outweigh against my academics, and I would love to get the Distinction AES at least.

Update: I didn’t get one because of my SAT score, and judging on their email, they are weighing SAT scores pretty heavily. They also said they’re looking at ECS closely as well.

@onion123‌

I copied and pasted my awards and ECs. Thanks for the help.

Extracurriculars:
•Math Club - President, founding member. I have won several regional and state awards in math competitions through the club, and I want to give back to the community this year with the club.
•Chess Club Member - Our school has a casual Chess club, and I’m currently ranked at the top. Not sure if this is worth anything.
•Gay-Straight Alliance - member, I mostly just listen to their discussions and I participate in their fundraisers.
•Student Council - Representative. This is my first year as a rep.
•NHS - member. I just participate in their events.
•Math Tutor - I tutor for my high school and the public library. I have about 400 hours worth of tutoring students that vary from elementary school kids to adults.
•LIT at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club - Worked as a volunteer for the boys and girls club, roughly 500 hours of community service.
•Other miscellaneous community service - 50 hours. Worked for library, ROTC, some other stuff.

Awards:
•Questbridge College Prep Scholar
•Collegiate Blog Mentorship Scholarship winner
•Mohave Electric Coop Youth Tour winner-won a trip to DC.
•Some other small local awards

Both of you seem qualified enough to receive the Honors Scholarship.
It seems like in-state students are more likely to receive AES Scholarships than out-of-state students (even if in-state kids have lower test scores/grades and a lesser amount of ECs, probably b/c in-state kids are more likely to attend UTD anyways)

Does anyone know if UTD upgrades scholarships while you go to the school. I know of some students who go their currently that were able to upgrade from Distinction to Honors, and I was wondering if they still did that.

UTD used to offer upgrades to scholarships, but they do not appear to offer them anymore. They took the upgrade information off of their webpages a few years ago.

They do allow you to use leftover semesters of scholarship eligibility for grad school, but you have to fill out a grad school usage form for that. I need to remember to have my daughter ask about that because her adviser told her to take the GRE and apply for grad school by March 15th to start the fast-track-to-masters program.

Has anyone admitted after December 1st received a sholarship notification?

My D was admitted on 1/6/2015 and she has not heard anything about scholarships yet. What is the process? Will it be an email or letter in the mail?

The website for AES says they are now reviewing students who were admitted after Dec. 1, which is my DD as well. She was admitted early Dec, and we haven’t heard anything yet. But we’re also waiting on McDermott news - only a couple more days!

Has anyone admitted after December 1st heard yet?

I still have not. I sent an email the second week of January to the AES coordinators and they told me we would find out by the end of this month.

nope:(

Anyone get a scholarship yet?
