UTD AES Scholarship

The repeated national news was for one incident also. The person who voted against the girl was an alum not a current student and the university moved swiftly and decisively to overrule the decision and make it clear that prejudice is totally unacceptable. Minorities have always been a part of Greek life at Alabama and will continue to be accepted.

The press loves to play up racism stories in the south, but prejudice occurs everywhere even in states with a reputation for being progressive. Here’s one example:

[San Jose State racist bullying is no prank, kids - SFGate](San Jose State racist bullying is no prank, kids)

So the “one” incident in 2013 has been UofAs only issue with race that has made national news?

How far back do you want to go? In the history of the University of Alabama there have been incidents of racism, just as there have been in the University of Texas.

and more recently…

@Dad2013 - I will definitely update - and thanks in advance for you doing so as well - as of today’s mail still haven’t received anything, but I’m thinking the Ice Storm didn’t help expedite anything… lol. I’m not too worried as I’m pretty sure the NMSF scholarship will pan out (and since our daughter is going into Arts & Technology she’s not terribly interested in applying to Collegium V either, their extra curriculars just aren’t up her alley ), but I’d like to hedge our bets on receiving some sort of scholarship just in case she doesn’t make NMSF - otherwise I’m going to have to find a job ;)

@mom21clgbnd, please ask your daughter to seriously consider Collegium V. Honors college in public university will give more personal attention to its students different from general UG. It will be private university-like life with priority class registration over general students. If need, contact Collegium V admission office before too late. Just my two cents as a parent.

@Dad2013 - Thanks  She’s actually had a sit down with the admissions dean and the NM Honors program, we would really like her to as parents, but we’re not going to force her to do it if she doesn’t want to. She feels that with her major being focused on Arts and Technology in Video Game design that Collegium V is overkill for her and she wants to be involved in the Living Learning Community as well as other groups on campus and we don’t want her to feel overwhelmed with it all, especially as a freshman. But we’ll see, she still has a couple of weeks to make a decision.

In any case I’m updating because she got an e-mail today about getting an AES scholarship. she got the Distinction one with full tuition and $1000 semester stipend.

@Dad2013 - I got the email with my AES Honors offer -

 • Complete coverage of UT Dallas tuition and mandatory fees
 • $3,000 per semester cash stipend to defray the costs of books, supplies and other expenses

Congratulations, all. My D got AES Honors offer, too. We expect more after she becomes NMF status. :)

The ATEC program at UT Dallas is terrific with industry leading faculty and a new world class building. However, the popularity of the ATEC majors has surged to the point that a minority of ATEC graduates get jobs immediately upon graduation. This I heard from one of the placement counselors at an on campus expo during freshman orientation She said that approx. 10% of ATEC graduates get job offers upon graduation because the supply of ATEC graduates far outstrip the availability of jobs in the local area. My son initially planned on majoring in ATEC, but switched to CS after considering career prospects. Just something to keep in mind. Not trying to dissuade your DD from following her interests. Just wanted to bring up the topic of career prospects.

By the way, UT Dallas seems remarkably diverse given its location in a rather homogenous middle to upper middle class bedroom community in Richardson. I’ve been on campus many times and it seems that one fourth of the students are Asian, one fourth are Southeast Asian, and the one fourth are Caucasian and one fourth Latino, African American, other. UT Dallas has a significant international student presence too.

It feels very inclusive on campus. As a father of a freshman, I have paid particular attention to the diversity of campus culture at various campuses and UT Dallas was a refreshingly diverse and inclusive find.

@Blubba - well ATEC isn’t OUR first choice for her (lol!) she’s whip smart in chemistry and we were really hoping she would pursue that with some nudging, but this has been in her mindset since middle school so it is what it is. Luckily for us she’s an ‘only’ so if we still need to support her a bit after graduation we can do so. I’m hoping she’s in the 10% that gets a job local or somewhere else ;)

Grats to those who received Honors scholarships. We’re still hoping the NMFS comes through for us, that’s $6000 difference in OOP each year, which is significant over the 4 total.

how much scholarship do you get through the “PACT scholarship”? i know it should be equivalent to or a bit more than the full tuition + 3k stipend

I was getting kind of worried for my middle daughter. When my oldest applied to UT Dallas, she got her scholarship letter the week after Thanksgiving. My second daughter had much better stats, but we didn’t get the scholarship letter from the university until the week before Christmas.

My oldest daughter is majoring in ATEC. She didn’t want to get involved in the honors program.

My middle daughter started off majoring in Neuroscience, but switched her major to Speech Pathology right after Thanksgiving. She really enjoys the honors program.

My D got admission on Dec 12th and since then waiting for AES. We are OOS (California). My D got AES from University of Houston already.

My S hasn’t heard anything either. He was admitted late November, just after the cutoff for review before the winter break.

What’s ATEC? My D is seriously considering UTD, she is a NM Semifinalist and McDermott Finalist so she should be able to attend free or very close to it. She’s interested in CS, Engr, and Biomedical Engr. We think she will also be accepted to MIT, Johns Hopkins, Caltech, etc. but of course she’d have major students loans.
Her dad is worried that UTD won’t get her into a good grad school program or a good job afterwards. Thoughts?

Hi, was reading through the comments and decided that I would give some insight.

I’m a freshman here at UTD. Accounting/Global Business double major, switched over from CS last semester. I applied to UTD around November of my senior year (2012) and got in within a week. I received an AES Scholarship with Distinction (full coverage of tuition and mandatory fees and 1000 dollar stipend/semester) around January, just after I got back from vacation. The scholarship was one of several reasons I chose to attend UTD, then say, other schools like Georgia Tech or UT Austin.

I’m surprised that UTD still hasn’t sent out some offers yet for AES Scholarships. My scores weren’t nearly as good as some of the posters here (heck, I didn’t even make the average-I had a 30 ACT and 1360 reading math combined). I guess I got in because of my volunteer work and the amount of AP courses I was taking (10 in high school), along with the grades. But I heard that the applicant pool is getting more competitive every year, and supposedly the next incoming freshman class (Class of 2018) is supposed to be one of the biggest freshman classes ever. That probably narrows down the options for scholarships. But to several of the posters here, I think your children should get scholarship based on the scores posted. I had one friend who didn’t get his scholarship until mid-March.

And to the previous poster, ATEC is the arts and technology program here at UTD. It blends arts and humanities with the increasingly rapid use of technology. I know people working in animation, photography, and a very hot career, game design. There’s not as many students enrolled in it here as say, natural sciences or business majors. Plus, they recently just opened up a fantastic new building (the Edith O’Donnell Arts and Technology building). It looks great and is one of the best looking buildings on campus. And to address the concerns about not going to a good grad program or finding a job, there isn’t a lot to worry about. UTD as a school have been increasing in the rankings every year (US News). And we actually have one of the strongest averages in freshman SAT scores in the nation (top 20 public univerisities). And if your D is considering engineering, then I recommend she should come here. We have a lot of companies in the Dallas area that come to recruit students for jobs such as Raytheon, TI, AT&T), just to name a few. In fact, I know an upperclassman that has an internship with TI, and just got a job offer from TI as soon as he graduates.

I’d recommend you take a strong look at UTD. Although people think that we’re a commuter school, which by some respect, there are a lot of commuters, we have so much to do besides that. They’re building a new freshman dorm (600 beds/gym/dining hall), 2 more parking lots, and a new research building. There are over 200 student organizations on campus, lots of tutoring services and career management help with resumes, internships, and jobs, and the faculty here is brilliant and willing to help.

@rangers123 ATEC sounds neat, prob more for my younger S in a few years than my D now though. We hear very positive things from those we know who are attending UTD. So we’ll be visiting in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your explanations!

I was admitted to UTD Finance Major for Fall 2014. I have recently changed my mind and chosen Actuarial Science instead. Does anyone know how to change the major? Thank you in advance. I’m international btw.

I apologize is somebody has already come along and told you what you need to know, I read the first like four posts on the thread and decided to just say tl;dr.

I was offered an AES scholarship roughly two months after being accepted to the school through automatic admission. My stats are:

Unweighted / Weighted GPA : 3.3 / 4.2 (second quarter, just barely)
SAT : 1290 (620R 670M + 650W)
ACT: 29 (31E 27M 28R 29S)

I feel like my essays may have helped me out here because my GPA certainly didn’t, and my scores were right on that average mark for the scholarship I received.

Even at the lowest tier of the scholarship though it unlocks a good bit for you, including the Clark program, the 9 week summer research program that I was considering throwing in an application for, plus it’s essentially a half-tuition scholarship over the four years.

Best of luck in getting offered a scholarship there!
