New to the forum and just got my acceptance from UT Austin on my second choice major which was Liberal Arts.

However, I was also accepted into UT Dallas School of Management. My choice is to either major in Business Management at UT Dallas or Economics at UT Austin. I do not really want to take the time to do the internal transfer into the school of business at UT Austin because I have already been in school for 2 going on 3 years at a community college and want to finish my degree. Also another factor is that the UT Austin business school only accepts admissions in the Fall which would put me another year behind.

So my question is what in your honest opinion would be the more valuable degree. A Economics Degree from UT Austin or a Business Management Degree from UT Dallas. Keep in mind I am going in as a Junior and still do not know exactly what it is I want to do for a career.

Thanks for any advice and help.

Wow, that’s really funny cause I had that exact same question come up for me about 6 months ago, but it was solved for me when I realized that a business degree wasn’t really what I wanted anyways.

Considering that you’re still unsure of what exactly you want to do I think it would be foolish to get a business degree. They’re very narrow and specific and do not allow for much flexibility in either courses taken or a career. You should focus on getting a broad education in the liberal arts and natural sciences.

Besides, an economics major from UT-Austin can get an entry-level job at an IB or Big-3 Consulting (although I don’t think it’s very common). The same can not be said for a business degree from UT-Dallas, so that might tell you something about each degree’s respective value.

Also consider that a graduate from UT-Austin can go to just about any graduate school in the country assuming they have high grades. UT-Dallas is just not well represented at top tier graduate schools.

go to ut for econ (this is coming from a utd student)

Depends completely on what you want to do after graduation

I was recently admitted to UT’s college of engineering as a transfer student. And since i have taken over 18 hours of econ courses, UT will probably give me a minor (i’ll probably need to take an extra course or two).

In my opinion, your alma mater makes a difference in the real world. In particular, when it comes to networking with others. That said, it really depends on what career choices you’re seeking. And as others have mentioned, an econ degree from UT is far more valuable than a business degree from a second or third tier school like UTD.
