UVA 2020 EA Results/Discussion Thread

Does anyone else’s application still say incomplete? I did everything through CommonApp and it says the only outstanding item for the application is my Mid-Year Grade Report which isn’t due for 3+ more weeks. Im really frustrated that I don’t have a decision yet, so if anyone could provide some input that would be helpful.

@brosby90, did you apply EA or RD? If RD, you’re decision will not be available for quite some time. If EA, then you’l need to contact the admissions office to inquire - you can leave a message on Dean J’s blog page and she can give you more insight.

Our son was declined yesterday, too - and he was a triple legacy! 4.0 unweighted, multiple varsity letters and team captains (nationally ranked in his sport, and was approached by the coach at UVA), lots of AP classes and strong ACT score, in-state, and we are Hispanic. My husband (one of the legacies) is pissed and I’m pretty sure UVA has seen the last donation from our family!

@MijoChbulkan I understand all of that. I’m familiar with how college fundraising works. I believe there is an ethical issue when a state university – in any state – favors legacies. I’m not bashing UVA for trying to raise as much money as it possibly can. I think a state university should look after its residents better than UVA does.

Has UVA published the total admit results for EA?

@txstateomind Applied EA, so I emailed DeanJ and posted on her blog last night, thank you

Accepted! In-state
4.46 W, 4.0 UW
SAT 2140 (690 CR, 760 M, 690 W)
SAT II: 780 Chem, 740 Math II, 730 US
Essays: good, but not great
Recs: really good
Congratulations to all how made it! To all who didn’t, you will surely do great things elsewhere!!!

Congrats to all who were accepted and if you didn’t get accepted, I promise there is a place for you just as perfect as UVA. My DD14 also was not accepted at UVA a few years ago, is a double legacy, had outstanding credentials, and thought the world had ended (for a couple of hours at least). She is now happily studying at another university that actually has a much better program for her major than UVA has. She is so very happy and so I am too! Hug someone tight and then get busy finding that special place for YOU!

I’m checking in to answer some of the questions that have been posted. Congratulations to those who got happy news! I’m glad to see some of the regulars around here were already admitted. To those who were deferred, just make sure those mid-year grades come to us in February. Also, click on the link in your letter to go to the defer FAQs. We answer all the questions that deferred students tend to ask there.

Answers to some of the questions I saw…

-I’ll post admission statistics broken down by Virginia and OOS next week on my blog. If you see a guilde or website provide one offer rate for UVA, ignore it. Residency is a major factory. It is considerably more difficult to be admitted from OOS. We are a public school and Virginia residents must be the majority at UVA (2/3 of the UVA population must be VA residents).

UVA has grown over the years to take more students. There have been attempts to limit OOS students by the legislature, but those bills always fail in appropriations. The state does not fund UVA in a way that would allow those bills to go through.

-GPAs are meaningless on this website. Weighting and grading scales are all over the place. Did you all see that someone posted that they had a 5.0 unweighted GPA?

-We admit, defer, and deny Deferred students will be reviewed again once their mid-year grades arrive.

-Academics come first in our review, but almost everyone who applies as the academics to be successful, which is why we also look to recommendations, essays, and activities. I would put recommendations and essays before activities, though. Everyone has a couple interesting commitments outside the classroom these days, so you don’t get in because of an activity. Similarly, you don’t get in just because of an essay. Holistic admission means we look at every piece of the puzzle before we render a decision**.

-The number of applications from your school is not a factor.

-The Jefferson Scholar process is completely independent. They don’t have access to our files and we have no knowledge of someone’s inclusion in their process unless an applicant sends us an update. [This is covered on the Jeff Scholar website](http://www.jeffersonscholars.org/ask-question).

-SIS is the Student Information System. It’s where you’ll manage your account now and in the future if you come to UVA. MyUVA is just an environment where students can explore UVA.

-Days on the Lawn info is coming next week. I addressed this on the blog!

-The only students who actually have a major are in kinesiology. Everyone else is undeclared.

I think that covers all the questions. Feel free to post anything else on my blog. I’m going to sign off and get back to the applications.

@52balletvieta -So happy you were accepted into UVA. I remember you from another thread and was disappointed when you were deferred but was so impressed how you handled it with the “grace of a dancer”! All the best to you in all your future endeavors! Keep on dancing! Congrats to all:) ~:>

What happened to the “beware” thread? Hm.

@Pburgmom Thank you so much and the best to you also!! I remember you as well!!

@“Dean J” will you list “legacy” next to admitted students when you post your information next week? I think it would be helpful and interesting to see those numbers. It’s a topic of conversation especially when rejected students see classmates who have been accepted and it’s unclear why one was accepted and the other wasn’t. At highly competitive high schools, these kids have been competing with each other since before middle school in some cases. Thank you. I think high school guidance counselors around Virginia are thanking you and their lucky stars for this snowstorm. It keeps parents at home and away from counseling offices!

@52balletvieta -As a dancer, you might find this interesting, my daughter (who is interested in chem. engineering) wrote one of her essays on the need to develop “sticky boobs” that actually work. She posted last night on her twitter account that “she and her sticky boobs” were accepted at UVA! Although, she won’t be attending UVA-it was one of her top school and she just loved the campus! Again-all the best to you

Since I have been a regular reader of this thread, thought I would post results for my daughter:
ACCEPTED
Out of State (California)
Act: 35
SAT I: n/a
SAT II: Math 2: 760, Bio: 760
GPA: UW: 3.98, W:4.57
APs: 8
Excellent ECs with leadership in multiple school service and sports activities. Summer enrichment courses and summer internships also listed.
Multiple foreign languages studied with national and local recognition for skill.
Letters of Rec.: Assume they were very good.
Essays: Excellent - she spent months writing and revising her Common App essays and supplemental essays for a dozen schools. Virginia essays were among her strongest.
So far, she is 3 for 3 on her Early Apps and already has some great options. She will have a difficult decision to make but she is very happy about having great choices.
Really appreciate the information provided by Dean J. on her blog - by far the best the best and most informative of the admissions blogs out there.
For those admitted - Congratulations!
For those deferred - Hang tight and have faith in what looks like a very thoughtful selection system
For those denied - You will have a great experience somewhere else and the disappointment you feel now will become a dim memory. It’s not the school, it’s what you do when you get there. You take yourself with you wherever you go. This is the advice I gave my daughter before any of the results came in.

@this8120 - that’ll never happen… I do know that legacy means more if you are OOS because you count toward instate numbers but you pay out of state tuition. That’s just a $$ fact and not admissions’ fault. Instate legacies (unless you are a high dollar giver) have less effect. I’m saying this based on talking to friends in development (not admissions) and personal experience. I’m also sure admissions would never admit to this (I get that too). Also, do not minimize the fact that you can only compare grades and standardized test scores between kids and not essays, recommendations, and other intangibles. College admissions is quite subjective and UVa does the best they can to communicate expectations and stay consistent.

Hi all, I would just like to ask if anyone knows the general chance of admission to those deferred (using previous years’ information).

@lvmjac1, the processes are separate. My husband taught a girl who was our area’s runner up for Jefferson and was DENIED admission. The school went to bat for her and asked the same question and was told the processes are separate. So, while not probable, it is possible to be a Jefferson Finalist and not be offered admission.
