@parentinwaiting we submitted copies of our 2015 taxes and W-2’s. Compared to the other schools that just used FAFSA I thought they were generous making UVA affordable for us (I have triplets attending college next year). The other schools just gave us loans…
My son was accepted EA as an Echols Scholar and we received our financial aid info today. Kind of stunningly disappointing.
It has us paying more than our full EFC, based on expected Cost of Attendance, with another $5500 in student loans (less than half of which are subsidized) on top of that. I had heard that UVA’s financial aid for out-of-state students wasn’t good, but I thought they’d at least get us to our EFC, if not lower.
This is feeling like a real punch in the gut right now.
@baltimoreguy Same here. Fortunately, a lot of the other schools I’ve already been accepted to have given me pretty good financial aid (i.e. Johns Hopkins). It’s ironic that schools that cost twice as much as UVa give so much more financial aid. I’m going to be paying at least $10,000 less if I decide to go to Hopkins, which is just really sad considering I’m in state for UVa.
Everyone “disappointed” about financial aid…remember that someone has to pay something! The federal government’s exclusive involvement in this process has caused college costs to skyrocket. When you have people at the top of the economic ladder paying full freight, no matter what it costs, and tuitions for people at the bottom of the economic ladder being paid for by a lot of financial aid, colleges can charge whatever they want. They can build new athletic facilities, chik-fil-a in the quad, massive numbers of beautiful buildings because they have guaranteed sources of income…the people in the middle are squeezed. Unless you have a 529 or generous grandparents, college is getting harder and harder to afford for the middle class. If there was competition for students and the government was less involved, the costs would go down - or maybe stabilize. Our daughter started at Vanderbilt in 2003. It was $40k a year. Now, it’s about $65 to $70k…where’s the outrage? When you all go to college and learn about things really work, think about this. It’s important we get it figured out for the students who follow…
Lol I didn’t even receive financial aid yet
Hi
I was admitted into UVA regular decision into arts and sciences!! yay so excited.
Aside from this great news, I applied to the Mcintire School of Commerce. Was I not accepted into this school and how does it work? Do you have to transfer after 2 years and is there a pre-approval? I am kinda confused.
Thanks
@businessg101 might want to post this question in the RD 2020 thread too, I believe you apply to McIntire after year 2 and it is very, very competitive. Definitely not guaranteed from what I understand, but could be wrong. Here is a link…https://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad/application-process-uva
I was accepted, but I applied to the School of Nursing and recently decided that I don’t want to be a nurse anymore :-? Is there a way to transfer to the College of Arts and Sciences before I even accept my offer of admission?
@businessg101 @bboop42 McIntire had a 68% acceptance rate, including people who applied from other schools. It is consistently 60-70% accepted. The people at UVA even said if you try and take hard classes and engage in the community, you should get in
Hey! International student here accepted to the College of Arts and Sciences So, I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone here could answer; first, should I email UVA’s financial service team about inquiries regarding payment plans and things of the sort? I am scrolling through UVA’s website looking for info about annual cost and monthly payments but everything is kinda confusing… Second of all, is there an international fee that I should pay in addition to the enrollment deposit?
Anyway, thats all the questions I can think of for now… Congrats to all the others who got in!!!
Right…you did not apply to McIntire. That was not one of the schools on the first-year application. The Commerce program starts in the third year.
Ideally, we would get a request to switch schools before admission. You can write to Dean Roberts with your request, but there is no guarantee of a switch at this point.
If the information on the Financial Services website is confusing, definitely reach out to them.
Your deposit info is on your SIS home screen.
