This thread was started by a student who seems to have applied EA and wanted to hear from others .It seems to be getting derailed from the original focus. There is another thread already about the riots, potential application impact, for those that still want to focus on that issue.
@sevmom agree that it is harder for OOS than in-State. For this year, it looks like OOS admission chances are either roughly the same or slightly easier than last year for EA OOS applicants.
@sevmom actually, these comments are VERY relevant to this thread as it involves how more or less difficult it is to gain admission for OOS students for this year versus last year. As a UVa grad, I don’t want to see kids discouraged by a UVa Facebook post that talked about 31% increase in applications from TWO years ago. As Thomas Jefferson so aptly wrote “truth is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error”. I want the kids applying to know what is truth versus marketing.
@1111bbbb These kids in the initial posts here have already applied, or their kid has, and they want a place to talk about that. Honestly, I doubt a bump in applications either up or down in any year, is going to discourage most kids that are inclined to apply from doing so. It is common knowledge that it is a tough admit and there are only so many seats to go around. If you feel that marketing is deceptive, you might want to take that up with the school , post again in the other thread about applications you have contributed to, or start a new thread altogether about your concerns.
@DeanJ - I just wanted to let you know that our family toured the Grounds on Monday, and our tour guide, Camille, was excellent. We have toured many colleges and universities, and have suffered greatly from the backwards-walking inaudible student guides. Camille took the approach of stopping at strategic locations to discuss aspects of the university. We could hear her well, and often could even sit down. She was a great ambassador for U.Va.
Sadly, the staffer who did the info session was not knowledgeable, and was not an enthusiastic public speaker. More training is needed in how to interact with a group of students and parents.
If you point me to where the students are posting about being discouraged, I will go chat with them. UVA’s link on Facebook has 11 comments on it and the only real conversation is between sisters, one of whom is at UVA right now.
@podresse, None of the UGuides walk and talk due to the size of our groups. I’m glad you enjoyed your tour! Hopefully, you were able to ask all of your questions when all the deans met you in Peabody at the end of the tour. If you didn’t fill out the feedback card in person, we usually email a link to an online form a couple days after the visit.
Anyway, I do hope that the students come back to the thread they started. I have always enjoyed checking in with them when I have been able to take a break from reading.
I am not able to hang out on this message board due to my workload, so posting here is not the way to get in touch with me. Please use email, twitter, or the blog if you need to reach out to me. There are also staff members that are happy to talk to you during business hours if you call our office.
Yes, am curious too, as I could not find these posts either of lots of kids commenting about being discouraged. And agree @Dean J , hope the original posters come back to this thread!
@“Dean J” the tours at UVA are just incredible. Honestly my tour was so good that it made me fall in the love with the school and immediately put it as one of my top choices.
And @1111bbbb , I haven’t met any other student who has been discouraged either by the goings on in Charlottesville or the amount of applications coming in. In fact, with all my friends (most of whom are applying to UVA), the riots in Charlottesville haven’t come up once. As a side note, we all acknowledge especially in a school that’s widely considered a public Ivy to be competitive in admissions, and we know that when we apply.
@ other students, do y’all know anyone else who did EA and maybe their thoughts on it?
Hi, I also applied early! I survived (barely) the common app website issues!
@habitualnerd and @“Dean J” - there are comments like “Oh Great”, “Just gonna keep crying”’, “wonder if we’re going to get in”. There were also numerous sharing of the post. How many kids saw this post from UVa as there are over 100k followers that did not comment? Why not say applications went up 5% this year versus 31% relative to TWO years ago? This is my last post. Apologize if I struck a nerve.
Dean J, we filled out the residency questions for UVA, but I am not able to see the Virginia status at the bottom of my SIS page.
@aj1203 what was the common app issue? D didn’t mention any issues her checklist only shows the February update a needed, so I’m hoping all is in and complete!
the common app website was crashing the night of Oct 30th, two days before the deadline! lots of panic at the time, like no idea if my app and essays were lost.
@aj1203 Did you lose everything?? If you did, that sucks.
No I didn’t, but when you click “submit” and everything goes blank, it freaks you out! it was nationwide apparently. I got up early the next morning to finish. Everything was received and now just waiting like the rest of us
I applied EA as well!
Chance me?

Do you have any idea when the EA applicants are typically notified?
@doodmom EA applicants will be notified in late January.
The website says January 31.
