UVA Early Action Applicants Thread

OK…this is strange, but is there anyway that someone would hear early from UVA? Do they give likely letters?

@LvMyKids2 SIS says January 31 for all EA to be released. If you/your child has received a likely letter, it may be for athletic recruitment.

I am not 100% on this one but I know that is the case at similarly prestigious uni’s, like Harvard.

@habitualnerd not my child at all. heard from a friend that someone was in UVA…not an athlete…I think this was a mix up. I don’t think UVA does likely letters for the non-athletes…

The Office of Admission did away with likely letters in 2012. There are definitely a few schools out there that still use them, but if someone says they got one from us, they are mistaken.

me!

I’m so nervous for the decisions to come out…I want to go to UVA so badly…

I did. The frequent admission emails we all get encouraging us to attend gets me excited. My parents get them as well.

I have read that they release decisions when they are completed, not always the 31st. I have seen releases on Jan 11th and 25th, so it really depends on the year.

@pinkzebra1234 source?

@“Dean J” Thank you so much!

@“Dean J” It’s very impressive and gratifying that you take the time to share on CC. Thank you.

Is part of UVA’s reasoning for releasing decisions later than other schools that some people will use it as a safety and get “weeded out” in mid-December? UVA is one of my top choices, but I know a lot of kids who have aimed towards the ivies and just received decisions.

I imagine it’s because they have a lot more people to go through. I applied to both UVA and Ivies. For me, especially because I am in-state, UVA gives those Ivies a run for their money, regardless of when decisions come out.

The last time we were able to release decisions in December, we got about 2,500 early applications. We got about 20,000 early applications this year.

We have 20 full-time admission officers and a small team of part-time readers to read the files. The are four ways I think we could get through the files faster:

-one and done reading (meaning your file gets looked at once with no guarantee that the person reading the file knows anything about your high school.)
-more part-time readers (it’s not the most popular job and I’m not sure our budget could handle more anyway)
-GPA or testing cut offs that eliminate some files from review (which makes no sense since GPA methodologies vary so much from school to school)
-not reading the essays or recommendations (which isn’t in line with a holistic review)

A truly holistic review requires thousands of hours of staff time. I know there are other schools getting through 20,000 files in six weeks, but they must have larger staffs or a different way of reading.

@“Dean J” In a household with two UVA law alums, I want to compliment you on your responsiveness and thoughtfulness for participating in this thread. We know how busy you are.
