I was accepted into uva and vtech for engineering and don’t know which to choose. I was also accepted to the honors program and housing at vtech. Not sure which is the better option.
Both programs are excellent, but you should visit each to determine which style is more fitting for you.
My daughter’s in the same situation, and has opted for UVa. I received multiple degrees from UVa Engineering, and the program worked extremely well for me and for those friends with whom I’ve kept up. I also have met and worked with quite a few Tech grads, know a ton of current Tech undergrads, and an Engineering professor, so I have a great deal of respect for the Tech engineering program.
My general advice: if you specifically know you want to be an engineer, go to Tech. If you want to use engineering as preparation in quantitative reasoning that can be applied in many ways (including engineering), go to UVa. The main difference in my experience is that Tech students do a great job at their specific fields, and UVa students tend to have a broader view of their potential careers. My fellow UVa engineering grads are pursuing a dizzying array of professions: from engineering to education, politics, business, law, and medicine. I never worked a day on a job that was directly related to my major, but everything I learned at UVa gave me the experience, flexibility, and quantitative rigor that allowed me to pursue exciting alternative careers. Tech engineering grads seem to be far more likely to stay in their fields (where they excel).
The honors program at Tech diminishes one shortcoming-- namely that the intellectual “oomph” is not as concentrated as it is at UVa. At UVa, you didn’t have to choose between hanging around with engineers or motivated, smart liberal arts majors. There was always a lot of interesting, challenging discussion. At Tech, engineering is the marquee major, so there’s not the distilled atmosphere of intellectual pursuit. The honors program impresses me as an answer to that challenge.
Choose UVa!!!
