@edsheerio96 @rainbowdippndot Do you guys have check marks ?
@edsheerio96 You shouldnt have any to-do’s if you turned in the forms.
@edsheerio96 your application is mostly going to come down to those recommendations you got. Since we don’t know who/what they wrote, we can’t really properly chance you. As you probably already know, the only thing we can infer is that the odds are against you.
Do you guys truly believe that the essay and recommendations can truly make or break UVA’s decision? Would a super amazing essay truly have that much impact on a candidate that it can overlook the sub-par (but not too terrible grades) that tney have?
Sure, @uvafan23. They would probably never admit to it, but you have to imagine that some do. Depending on who recommended you, and the strength of their recommendation, it could definitively be a factor in their decision. Same goes with the essay. If the candidate has an incredible story and can thoroughly explain themselves, why wouldn’t it be able to boost an application with SUB-PAR academic merit? Now, if the application had a TERRIBLE GPA/transcript, it would probably be different. If that makes sense.
But then again, what do I know… haha.
Here’s an example of 3 students that could be threading the fine line between acceptance or denial, pick 2:
Student #1 - Rodrigo
GPA: 3.2
SAT: 1900
Legacy (parents went to UVA)
Recommendations: Professor that has been teaching for 20+ years at UVA, Recommendation from a counselor and a high-ranking official from their school now.
Essay: good
Student #2 - Mary
GPA: 3.0
SAT: 2200
Recommendations: Amazing recs from current professors and counselors.
Essay: Wrote about how she overcame homelessness and sickness to be where she is at now. She talks about how her GPA suffered due to her inability to make it to school and being held back by financial restrictions, but she managed to completely turn it around with some good luck and hard work.
Stundet #3 - John
GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1950
Recommendations: Good
Essay: Standard, uses a lot of quotes.
You would probably more inclined to take #1 and #2 since #3 is just too average… But then again, this is nothing like how the decision process goes and I am merely using this as an example to showcase what I meant with my previous post. Take it for what it’s worth; this is just my opinion.
@Jouuuu yeah, my thoughts exactly. The amdissions process is so intriguing. If I get into UVA I swear I will write a book because getting in with my stats (although not terribly terrible stats) would
Truly be a feat in itself. Just to give u guys a little perspective (I had s 1.7 in HS, 2.7 senior year) and received a 3.4 my first semester in community college and was waitlisted at UVA with just 1 semester under my belt. Call me dum, but I was proud of that
I just hope after they saw my good midterm grades that it was a good sign
Yes, essays and recommendations can definitely be a deciding factor. Remember that while UVA is a great school, they don’t just take the best. (So if they have 30 openings, they don’t just take those top 30 with the highest GPA and test scores). They try to build the best class they can. That means some “average” people. For everyone, including those with possibly sub-UVA test scores and GPAs, the essays and recommendations will play a role.
Here are my stats, I feel as if I’m on the borderline as well. What do you guys think?
3.94 GPA
64 Units
All but Spanish 2 completed for Pre-reqs
1460/2400 Sat- took it my beginning of my senior year in hs I think
2.4 hs GPA- raised from a 1.6 Freshman year
Worked part time all throughout college
Debate Team
First gen and what I believe to be 3 pretty good essays and hopefully 3 good recommendations!
Applied for philosophy in arts and sciences, but only took one Phil course, which had worried me a bit
@uctransfer2016 I think your GPA improvement is a big plus. It shows that you really locked it down and addressed areas you were slacking on. You SAT is a bit low but that isn’t always a deciding factor. How do you think your essay was?
Anyone else’s SIS doing weird things? Posted a pic of how mine changed, but it goes away if I refresh usually.
Nope. Mine just says the same old “Self Service” under " Explore Classes at UVa. That’s really interesting
How is it acting weird?
Mine always looks that way… @LAVOLPE
@LaVolpe what does it say under self service?
Whelp looks like my chances just got lowered
@lowrancc What do you mean…? I’m talking about the links underneath to select classes.
@lowrancc I think my essays were really good! When I read them over it helps assure me I have a good shot. One thing I forgot to mention is I have 3 Ws, including one from this semester, which was an English class I didn’t need. One of the Ws j retook for an A and the other one, which I dropped last semester, I did not try and retake (Econ) and didn’t need it for my major
@LaVolpe I believe mine has always said that
Not mine. It just says self services @lowrancc
