Hi!
I was just wondering what approximately a good mid-term report GPA would be to send in?
My first semester GPA at my university was a 3.87, but my mid-term GPA is a 3.61. I don’t know if it really negatively affects me or if it positively affects me at all. I.e. Is it frowned upon to not send the mid-term report in?
I’m in the same boat as madeline414, I have a 3.9 gpa for first semester but a 3.55 gpa for my mid year report. I know I can bring it up to at least a 3.7 by the time school ends, but I’m not sure if I should submit my mid year report. How badly will it hurt me if I send it vs if I don’t send it? I’m an in-state resident if that helps shape an answer. Also, does anyone know the latest I can send my mid year report?
Hey I’m also in the transfer process just like you. Obviously the bulk of your admissions decision is made by assessing your first semester grades and the transfer ability of you as an applicant. The fact that your in state matters a lot and is a big deal because in state students like us are given preference. Mid term report can certainly help and I’ve seen applicants get waitlisted due to them not submitting their reports. I would say definitely send it, but if your GPA ends up at the 3.5 region, that may kill your chances entirely. It’s very important you finish strong so you can submit the midterm report. I personally would submit any midterm report higher than a 3.6 GPA
Oh okay, that makes sense. So would you recommend I don’t send my mid year report if I have a 3.55 mid year? Depending on how my professor scales my test, I am either going to have a 3.55 or a 3.61 mid year report.
The GPA for second semester obviously isn’t bad, it’s just a significant drop from the near perfect GPA first semester. They might see the drop and assume the worst. I would send the 3.61 not 3.55
Depends on your major though. If your major is super competitive, then idk if I’d submit a 3.6. I think this is especially true, if you’re confident that your gpa will be better at the end of the semester.
I kind of feel like it really depends on what class is bringing the GPA down. I think the purpose of mid year reports is to see that you haven’t totally messed up your classes. My other thought is does the transcript they have already indicate what classes you are taking in the spring. On the flip side I feel like by not sending it then you are trying g to hide something. Catch 22. Good luck.
Actually I’d like to modify my response to you a bit. I would agree with @Vincent1997 and say that you probably shouldn’t submit any midterm report with less than 3.7 considering you’re applying for a major in the SEAS and I hear it’s much more competitive than CAS. Just work hard and finish strong and try to get your midterm report in with a higher GPA. To be honest, you may just have to submit your report whether you get a 3.5 or 3.6 since they might wait list you and wonder why you didn’t submit anything for 2nd semester. Of course there’s also the chance they don’t care about your midterm report at all and admit you with only your 1st semester grades.
Yeah, I am applying to CAS, (planning to be a politics major). Not sure how competitive that is. Any opinions on whether or not to send it in?
Yes I think you in particular should send it in. CAS and politics major is not that competitive at least at UVA. Send it in
Do colleges even verify midterm reports? What’s stopping some crazy kid from just saying he has straight A’s and forging signatures?
That’s the flaw in midterm reports that kind of takes away some legitimacy. Midterm reports hopefully give admissions a general idea of how you’re doing, but yes interesting point. It is possible for people to lie on them
Another midterm report question: can we just scan it and email it (saves time and money) or must we physically mail it?
I’d think that someone who does that probably doesn’t have great grades to begin with. Furthermore, I hope that the punishment for being caught is enough of a deterrence.
I hope so too. It’s an extremely sleazy thing to do and from old CC threads, it looks like tons of students have gotten away with it. It makes one begin to question how much of importance is put on the midterm reports in the first place…
Sucks that people actually do it and then get rewarded with an acceptance. Admissions counselors weren’t born yesterday so one would hope they are smart enough to catch the worst cheaters (midterm report says A but they get a D as final grade)
I would never dare to forge something like that. It’s like hiding a dead body in a cellar for the rest of your life. That will ruin their career, if it comes to light.
