@NOVAtransfer Do they look badly on you taking a light load?
How would you go about explaining that in the essay?
I’m curious, did you take a good load 2nd semester? If that’s light too I don’t know how you’re gonna explain that at all
I think a light load is fine but I would explain it. If you have a student taking 12 credits but is working 25 hours a week I don’t see how that can be frowned upon.
And I do believe SAT and or ACT is needed for 2nd year transfer not sure about 3rd year but certainly should look into
@acceptancewoohoo @uvact123
My freshman year, I only took 6 credits in the fall and 6 credits in the spring because of financial aid issues. However, I was working 40+ hours per week at a full-time 9-5 job in my major, and during the fall semester, I was also doing some political campaign work. I used my free time to make measurable progress in non-academic self-education activities (philosophy studies, reading, personal development, health, etc). I plan on mentioning that in my essays.
My sophomore year (this year) im still working 40+ hours a week, but I took 13 credits in the fall and 17 this current semester. I supplemented with a 3 credit CLEP exam that CAS will accept, and fulfilled my language requirement with a Spanish CLEP test which gives me an additional 15 credits (those credits won’t transfer to UVA, but English is my second language so I will be testing out of language at orientation or taking the SAT subject test).
Even though I took a super light load last year, I was super careful to make sure every class I took 1. Transferred to UVA and most importantly 2. Fulfilled one of my transfer course reqs. Nevertheless, I am S U P E R nervous and very concerned about my chances since my current GPA is a 3.75 (aiming to raise it this semester but, we shall see).
What do you guys think? Does this hurt or help my chances?
P.S. SAT/ACT are no longer required for CAS transfers.
I’m really not sure. Better chance of getting in than getting rejected thats for sure. Since you have junior status good chance tbh. I would only worry if I was in my first year and had less than a perfect GPA from a NVCC.
Actually I re read your post and I’m not sure if you’re junior status. You have about <45 credits from NVCC yes? I have about 9 or so credits less than you as a sophomore, but I’m pretty sure we both still have a very good chance. After this many classes, UVA will tell you’re a smart kid. Only problem is that the GPA should still be higher. If you have a 3.8+ or preferably close to a 4.0, I would call you a lock for admissions. But again, you have a lot of credits and an A average so I would say you’re going to be accepted this coming April
For real though, anyone getting nervous this early on?
At the end of this semester, I will have exactly 45 transferable credits, and a total 61 NOVA credits (includes the 1 credit SDV course). So I arrive at UVA with 45 credits if I don’t take summer courses, which I plan to do but let’s assume the worst, and that puts me dead in the middle of second year and third year haha.
I have been nervous as heck since February 1, the exact moment I realized that in 3 months this process I’ve anticipated for 2 years will come to an end and my fate will be decided. Does anyone have any coping tips?
Actually now I’m really concerned I’ll select the wrong option on Common App. @DeanJ, do I need to apply as a second year transfer? I was really hoping to transfer as a third-year and make up the missing 15 credits partly in the summer session and with a J-Term course I’ve been eyeing. My transfer requirements are done, it’s just my number of transferable credits will be 45. I’ll have an A.A. Liberal Arts, too.
There are no coping tips homie… Just focus on school I guess and finishing your app. The worst part comes after apps are due and we wait for decisions…
My guess is that you have sophomore status b/c you will have 45 credits at the end of the semester. However call admissions or email them. This isn’t an “official” board nd you are better off getting advice for your individual situation from the admissions department.
@Collegehelp4us took your advice!
I called the office and they said to apply as a third year transfer. Since I’m only down 15 credits and I have 2 years left of school, I can easily make it up in summers and J-Term

Out of state so I really can’t tell. Instate most likely accepted, but that’s not the case.
Hi, my name is Marco and I’m currently a first year undergraduate student from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and I applied for this Spring 2018 transfer to the University of Virginia. I am majoring in Computer Science and applied to the school of engineering and applied sciences. I took 17 credits my first semester (last fall) and am taking 17 credits this semester. So to start off I want to give a little background. My high school results were very poor and not even close to what UVA’s typical GPA was for incoming freshman students. In my freshman and sophomore years of high school I suffered from ADHD and depression. I could barely study and get my work done which really hurt my grades, and GPA. After trying a few medications I was finally a bit stable in my junior year and senior year. My GPA was affected however so badly from my first two years of high school that I was not able to get accepted anywhere. My overall GPA in high school (including my senior year grades) was a 2.75. I decided to attend a community college for a fresh start and in my first semester I took 17 credits and I ended with a GPA of 4.0 with straight A’s in each class. This semester I am taking 17 credits and as of now have a 4.0 heading into the midterm range of this semester. I know that UVA will weigh my high school results along with my college work, but realistically what are my chances? My SAT is a 1200 so it isn’t great either. Thankfully for the engineering school, sending SAT or ACT scores are optional. I am a part of NOVA’s honor society and I’m on the dean’s list with a good standing comment under my college transcript. My high school grades show a positive correlation as each year my GPA got better and better but it is still quite low. I know I can’t change the past but it seems like even with my current results in college, UVA will hold the past against me and I will probably get rejected. Please let me know and please be brutally honest about my chances of actually being accepted or even wait listed. I don’t like to keep false hope and your opinion can help me make a few key decisions in the coming months. Also I have another question. So the UVA website said that by May 1st, spring transfer students will know their decision. However is it possible that they give the decisions before that date like in mid April or even before?
Sorry this is long. I hope someone can help me whenever they get the chance.
Regards,
Marco
@CTUR782 I’ve learned that evaluating a 4.0 GPA is very hard. If you have good EC, recommendations and essays, you have the best possible chance at being accepted. That being said, with really competitive schools you never know, if anyone is going to get in, which is why feedback is almost pointless. Nevertheless, now that you’re still a freshman also means that high-school will be considered. Purely based on GPA that will make you look weaker, but on the other hand you have your backstory and a good college GPA. I’d advise to submit a mid-term report as well. Also an interesting information is that for the McIntire business school, which I believe is the most competitive one, not a single student with a 4.00 was rejected. Although that information is in reference to internal transfer, I believe that it gives a pretty strong indication about a 4.00 students chances.
We were notified last Friday in April last year. You have nothing to lose, apply but give yourself a backup plan, good luck and congratulations for turning things around.
Hmmm. I thought I was the only one to recognize this trend. Nobody really knows for sure how UVA admissions is done or knows the “secret.” I’ve went back to 2012 transfer threads and I’ve also found the same trend. Whether you’re a sophomore or junior transfer applicant, it seems that there wasn’t a single 4.0 GPA applicant that ended up not getting in. Even with the hyper-competitive Mcintire, it seems that not a single applicant with a 4.0 got rejected. Again, we are just looking at the applicants who bothered to put up their stats on college confidential in the first place. I’ll still argue that with dozens of 4.0 applicants I’ve seen since 6 years back, not a single applicant with a 4.0 transferable record was rejected. Interesting stuff…
Thank you for the help. So you mean the last Friday of the month I’m assuming? So no chance of knowing by early or mid April?
@CTUR782 Yes. UVA doesn’t do rolling admissions.
