UVA Housing 2012

Wow that's cool.. Does anyone know whether IRC will also release the names before the official housing allocation is out?

from what i understand, the irc isn't anywhere near as selective as brown. but unless they have a results page on their site (which i don't see) then you probably just have to wait

after your first year, do many people still live on campus? is it possible?

most upperclassmen who stay on grounds live in lambeth. a few live in the other places (brown, irc, bice... copeley/faulker, gooch, etc are all pretty miserable but obviously inhabited by people...somehow) but honestly if you're anywhere farther than lambeth/irc then you might as well get a place on the corner. you apply for 2nd yr housing in october/november. oh the language houses are all pretty close and well respected places for those upperclassmen to live (russian house, french, german, spanish, and then also shea which is asian type languages). of course there's the lawn for 4th yrs. you'll see if on-grounds or off-grounds is what you want once you've lived on grounds for a bit.

Wait, does financial aid cover apartments (when you get to the second year)? That is, can you transfer the financial aid assigned for dorm housing to private housing?

Maybe. Some scholarships will cover any aspect of college, some will only cover educational costs (tuition, books, etc). You'd have to check with whoever is providing the financial aid. I do not think anything from AccessUVA would, nor would any other money from the university. So if you're receiving a stipend for housing from the university, I think it will only apply for on-grounds housing. But outside scholarships might. Or just take out a separate loan.

Ah, so it isn't "might as well get something around the corner."

I'd take a longer walk over more debt any day. :p

I get some AccessUVa aid, and there is no restriction regarding housing.

Whether you can find affordable decent housing off grounds that you can walk to safely at 3:00 am after working on a project is another matter.

It's C'ville, righhhht? Safety is an issue?

No offense, but you're stupid if you think C'ville has no safety issues. Sure, for the most part it is safe and secure, especially in the heart of grounds during the school days. But you have to remember that C'ville is a small city and other people besides students live there, so crime occurs, all the time. Small-time theft is the most common crime, since people leave stuff around (laptops, iPods, other electronics, wallets, bikes without locks, etc) and people, even students sometimes, will just walk by and pick it up. Be smart with your valuables and nothing will happen. Robberies happen as well, mostly late at night when people are being dumb and hanging around an empty parking garage at 3am (happened last semester). Assaults occur, mostly on weekends and again, late at night, and it's usually brought on by fights. Haven't really ever heard of murder/etc near grounds recently.

So, people just need to be safe, keep an eye on their valuables (don't just leave them out at the library...ask a person near by to keep an eye out if you have to get up for even 10sec), don't walk alone at night, use SafeRide, and be sensible when choosing housing.

Unfortunately, we did not read these postings until today and - just as the person who works in housing predicted - my daughter, a 1st Year who requested a single, got placed in Hereford. What to do?? What's the liklihood that a request to move would be honored? Should we wait until orientation next week and check it out? Now she's feeling both like she'd prefer a roommate as well as a more central location.

I doubt they'd move her right now. I would call housing MONDAY and see if she can be placed on a waiting list. Come August, though, she has a much better chance of being moved. I knew three friends at UVA first year who's roommates just didn't show up. Roommate conflicts occur and people get moved. But, it's better to tell them NOW and say you'll take anything in Alderman/McCormick (you cannot be picky as to New or Old dorms...take what you can get!) if anything opens up between now and August, and you'd like to be considered in August after school starts. The Housing people are really nice, they should be able to help you, and the hundreds of others who got stuck in Hereford.

selecting the single basically guaranteed you in hereford. Your daughter will get moved eventually if she lets housing know soon. Hopefully she'll be reassigned before move-in so that she won't have to make another switch after school has already started.

I feel like the people who were unvoluntarily put into singles should have preference over someone who had a change of mind though? If everyone requests to be moved, I don't know where that leaves you. But I suppose a lot of people just make the best of it, which is what your daughter should do if she can't be moved. It's not THAT far, there are buses if you're lazy, etc. It's UVA it's not the end of the world.

This may be a bit off topic, but do people usually rent the microfridges? Are they good? Do you know were we can buy them?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/532824-more-worth-rent-buy-microwaves-fridges.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/532824-more-worth-rent-buy-microwaves-fridges.html</a></p>

just wondering, how far is the walk from hereford to the lawn in uva? In my tour i did nto visit hereford, and as many others here, i did not read the postings til now and now is placed in hereford. thanks in advance

it's far but it's not that far. plus there are buses that you can take should you be feeling lazy. it looks like it is closest to walk along stadium rd, even tho most people walk alderman to mccormick... Gmaps Pedometer says it is a mile walk. but you can just take a bus, it's not a big deal. the annoying part will probably be the steps (that is what i get from gooch/dillard people). you could also ride a bike.

Yo, how do you use that thing. That's awesome!

EDIT: got it. Click "Start Recording" then double click to add points. Neat. .71mi from my apt to the e-school. Freaking Thornton.

so i'm subletting a woodrow apt, .1 miles to thornton, you should try and get in on one of those.
