Yes EA for University of Florida, still rejected despite in-state with 34 ACT, A grades, all AP classes (calc, bio, macro, anatomy), 400 hr EC. UF & UVA were his 2 top schools. EA for all schools applied. Rejected at both UF and UV and also UNC/JH. Did not even attempt to try to Ivy, just best public schools in south. Welcome to 2019 and the new age.
wmonroe19 best of luck as well. Don’t ever give up. That is what we told our son.
@ocicat how are you accepted already to Tulane? Do they have non binding EA? I know their decisions are not out yet so just curious. Good luck with your decisions you’re in at some great schools!
@NellieWhoah how do you know you are an Echols scholar?
@Bluemarker it was in the middle of the main page when I logged in.
@ sipco100 - Agree it’s tough out there. After hearing about how bad things were last year my DS applied to 16 schools which is outrageous but so glad he did. He has good stats (33 ACT, 1430 SAT, 3.9 UW GPA, 4.18 W, honors track classes and 5 AP classes, multiple year Varsity Athlete, club founder, concurrent college classes with A’s, summer programs in his major, the standard for most applicants you see for these schools. He was denied ED from Vandy, EA from UNC, Deferred EA then denied BC, NE. Denied UT Austin, Wait listed at UVA, waiting on 4 schools but expect denials from those. He didn’t even attempt Ivy. Luckily he got into a few schools which offered him nice Merit awards so he has some good options to choose from even though not his top choices. The application fees are brutal but it pays to cast a wide net these days if you can afford it. UVA is his top choice if he gets off the wait list but I see students with higher stats on the list and as OOS student he doesn’t have high hopes.

Looking at the RD admissions of the students from my Ds school, UVA seems to be using different criteria for RD than EA. in EA many lower stat students got in but many RD students with better stats got waitlisted with an option to do one year study in Wise campus and guaranteed transfer to main campus.
I am not saying it is wrong but they should have been clear on the evaluation criteria for EA and RD, which obviously seems to be different based upon admissions. It seems better to apply in EA than RD similar to all other colleges and UVA is no different.
Anyone know how good is Wise campus? It is like penalty to go to that campus? Earlier UVA offered two years in Wise campus and guaranteed transfer to main campus. Not sure how many took that option.
@DSOF20192023 You say “It seems better to apply in EA than RD similar to all other colleges and UVA is no different”. I’m not sure that this would’ve held true for my DS. I think that his mid-yr grade played a huge part in his RD decision at UVA. Had he applied EA, he might’ve been rejected or if deferred would’ve had to hope that they look at his application again with the mid-yr grade. I don’t know many schools that requested the senior mid-year report.
@DSOF20192023 I’m not sure. I’m just a parent.
This year there were about 25,000 in the early pool and they made 6550 offers. 26% acceptance rate.
The regular pool had about 15,000 plus about 7000 deferrals (probably some said no to deferral, so let’s say 5000), which is about 20,000. They made about 3150 offers. 16% acceptance rate (but we aren’t certain of total applicants in this pool due to deferrals declining.)
I had guessed they would make 3100 more offers for regular, so I suppose I am a good guesser.
There were fewer spots left for regular decision because so many were taken during early action.
My Daughter was accepted but I do not see any financial information. Has anyone that was accepted received notice or awards or aid?
@lawlosa I think UVA doesn’t mail out financial aid information until later because it depends on how many people are in-state versus out-of state? That’s just a theory, but it might make sense because I know most colleges that don’t offering varying financial aid based upon residency release financial aid info alongside an admissions decision.
@lawlosa and I haven’t received any information yet, either.
Hi all, Stopping by and see that I’ve been tagged. Please just email me if you need to get in touch with me. I’m not able to check in regularly due to my workload.
We don’t have criteria for admission. We look at the applicant pool we get an make our decisions from there. We’ve always been pretty up front about the fact that the Early Action pool tends to be the stronger of the two pools. [I</a> even write a blog post about deciding between the EA and RD options every year](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: How to Decide Between Early Action and Regular Decision for #UVA).
I wish people would stay away from making statements about the worthiness of other applicants. Most people don’t even know the full contents of their our applications, so it’s a bit odd to assume that you know what is in other students’ files.
Regarding financial aid, once they have a student’s package posted in their SIS account, an email will go out to the student telling them to check for it.
I hope that helps!

Accepted, from NOVA
IB Diploma Candidate
31 ACT
4.164 W GPA (UW ~ 3.65)
Debate, FBLA, theatre, work, etc.
I’m attending but I was also surprised, a lot of ‘better’ kids from my school didn’t get in, but that only proves that essays are the MOST important part (I spent a long time on mine) and only idiots believe that a 1600 and 4.5 will get you in anywhere. Tea.
Rejected
Applied as a history major
4.7 gpa
33 on ACT- 36 on reading and English, 33 on science 29 on math
Had a very good connection to the school and thought I was getting in.
@sipco100 UF does not have EA. They only have one deadline and one decision period, RD. Where would you estimate that he was ranked in his class?
@sipco100
Son is also from Florida rejected from UNC, Notre Dame, Northeastern and UVA but was accepted at UF, FSU, USF, Wake, Case Western, University of Miami. Deferred at Michigan and awaiting Duke.
He has similar stats also pre-med but doesn’t have straight A’s he’s in IB and his school doesn’t give out a lot of A’s, they don’t rank but no one in his class has straight A’s. UW is 3.6 and W is 4.2 (highest you can have at his school is a 4.4)
Curious as to why your son didn’t apply to FSU and University of Miami? Both have great bio-chem programs.
Though our doctors all rave about the Pre-Med programs at USF.
