Hi everyone,
I am unaware if there have been any similar threads, so I figured I would start one.
I was recently admitted EA at UVA to the class of 2023. As it is my top school, I am super excited! However, being out of state, it is a little expensive for me.
My parents make too much to get generous financial aid from other schools, but not enough to be able to afford schools full price, as my brother is also currently a sophomore in college. I am willing to take out a loan, but I was wondering from past students or parents in the middle class if UVA gives anything to students who may not be under the category of “financial need” but also cannot afford full price? This is terms of scholarships rather than loans. Any information would be much appreciated.
UVA does not give Merit to OOS students. They clearly state that they give Need based Financial aid. We were full pay for 4 years.
There are scholarships at UVA. They are listed on two sites:
- Student Financial Services - https://sfs.virginia.edu/scholarships (this page lists the ones that require students to identify themselves as fitting the criteria - https://sfs.virginia.edu/self-identify)
- Alumni Association - https://alumni.virginia.edu/scholarships/
In addition to the list of scholarship Dean J mentioned look at outside scholarships in your area. It may not seem like much to get $1,000 or $2,500 but if you get several of them they can add up! Your HS Guidance Counselor should have a list. Think Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist Club, etc Also consider Elks National Scholarships. There are several opportunities but you have to work for them.
@fruitloop2001 you are what we called “too rich for financial aid but too poor for college.” I am in the same boat with your parents.
Same situation here – happy to be accepted from OOS, but if not in the running for the Jefferson, it’s too expensive to make it work.
