UVA Transfer Stats

Must be the quiet after the storm... I too want to transfer to UVa, but my high school statistics are terrible: 3.1 GPA 1150 SAT. Terrible. I went to GMU and, after almost completing four semesters, have maintained a 4.0. For the application I chose #7c (is ignorance bliss). Based on everyone else's stats I don't stand a chance. My negligent behavior in HS really messed up my chances of getting a decent education.

Sounds to me like you not only have a chance, but a very good one at that. A 4.0 after 4 semesters is very impressive, and I don't think UVA is too concerned with what transfer applicants did in high school.

...On a side note it appears as if I will be getting a good GPA for my winter quarter classes and picking up a fairly impressive EC. Does anyone know if UVA would accept any supplementary transcripts/ECs at this point?

Thanks for the encouragement, but only time will tell. You can always ask Dean Roberts about submitting additional material.

Christophsky... I think I'd trade my 4.0 u/w, being valedictorian, and my 1380 SAT for what you have. 4.0 GPA in college is great. I have a 3.68 right now... worst of all, it's because I had a 3.46 last semester. Sending in my 3.71 for midterms (final grades will hopefully be even higher but unfortunately schools won't know that until after admissions decisions are made)... but figure they will at least show that I'm not dropping off but just had a bad semester.

Seriously though 4.0 through 4 semesters is golden.

Also, what program are you applying too?

I'm applying to McIntire.

Toph,
Technically, as you pointed out, they won't see fourth semester's grades (midterms won't be on the transcript). I am applying to the School of Engineering. 3.68 is nothing to sneeze at--the average GPA of an accepted applicant is 3.5 (I think).

Also, if accepted, what kind of housing options are you all considering?

I'll probably get a single first semester... then once I meet some people maybe see if it's possible to get an apartment in the spring.

Well I believe McIntire's acceptance rate is lower than the overall acceptance rate (although I could be wrong). I don't think it's as low as the architecture one though... good luck with that asbuckeye... seems like you are on the right track though.

Toph, you can't change your housing choice after a semester. If you take a single fall semester you'll be committed for the spring semester as well.

Thanks for the info, wahoo.

Good news for me... (while it'll in all honesty probably make little difference), I found out my prof had rounded down my 92.85 and that was without including homework, which would've given me over 93... and so one of my A-'s became an A... I don't know something about having over half of my grades being A's puts me in a good mood.

As it should...in this case ignorance is not bliss! Knowing your grades is bliss.

Amen! That was my first semester Toph, but unfortunately, I don't think I will finish out quite as well this semester.

I am currently a freshman at JMU and want to transfer to UVA, I applied last year. I live in state
JMU gpa- 3.2 last semester (business courses) and now have a 3.7 for mid semester grades
HS GPA- 3.9 (from competitive private school)...SAT-1220...AP's- 4
Both my mother and my brother went there
Recomendation from a former congressman who served on the Board of Regents (appropriates funding for the University apparently its a big deal or something)
I have wanted to go to UVA forever so if anyone can help me pleasee respond

Honestly...none of us know how transfer admissions work exactly. The letters should help. 3.2 is proably a little lower than you'd want or a GPA, but... is definetly not like some far out GPA that you can't get in with if everything else is good. How are your ECs and essays?

I agree with Toph. None of us have any idea. Your gpa this semester is alot better than first semester, but unless you sent in your mid-semester grades, they'll only see the 3.2. Your HS gpa is great, though. But again, not sure how much they'll look at HS stuff. If your EC's and essay is great, I wouldn't worry about it too much. And, you're in-state, so that's a PLUS!

Toph,
Essays??? I only completed 1 essay. You know, the one where you had to pick which statement you wanted to respond to (I chose Martin Luther King Jr's). Everything else I just wrote a paragraph or two. I figured they wouldn't want to bother with reading a whole lot of other stuff, other than the real essay section. Maybe I should've written more, I dunno. Too late now, that's for sure.

Actually that was my shortest one. I did "best day" and it was like 350-400 words. The other ones were about 600 I think. Mainly because I felt I had a lot to explain changiing majors and all. The why are you fit for your field one was probably my best.. since I did a good job of taking my ECs and showing how they were really good for business.

"The why are you fit for your field one was probably my best..."

lol, I think I only had about 70 words for that one, along with all the rest. But, like you, I entered my EC's (debate, public speaking, leadership) into it for poli-sci. The MLK essay was around 600 or so.

Oh dear, EC's.... I don't really have any! The only EC I mentioned was that I run a small IT consulting business and used to be a nationally recognized musician. I am screwed. When are we supposed to be notified of our acceptance/rejection? May 1?

I don't think you're any more screwed than I am, christophsky. Running a consulting business should look pretty good to them, and being a nationally recognized musician is impressive. From what I understand, even though you're a freshman, they'll look at your college gpa more than your HS gpa. And the SAT shouldn't play a huge factor either. My HS gpa and SAT weren't stellar either, so I think we should still have a 50/50 chance.

And yeah, gotta wait till May 1. We may find out a week before, but that's probably the earliest.

Actually, I am a sophomore (completing 4th semester), but I don't think that will make much of a difference. Thanks for the reply.

All the better christophsky. I doubt they'll give your HS gpa much weight, if any. A 4.0 after 4 semesters is awesome.
