My son is majoring in business (hasn't specified a field yet), and is trying to decide between these three colleges.

Providence will be 50K, UVM 41K and Bryant 36K (he got 9K in merit scholarship).

His first choice has always been PC but that was before he took a formal tour for accepted students at UVM and I think his interest of UVM has increased. Yes, he does snowboard.

He says that PC is his first choice but can't give a specific reason.

They are all very good schools. If he were my son, I’d let him decide if money did not matter that much. If finances really do matter, I’d encourage UVM or Bryant. I would warn that Bryant is considered more of a business school, even though other majors are offered. I am sure that all 3 have their positives and negatives, but at the end of the day they all are good schools. I would just make sure that Bryant is going to have the majors that your son might be interested in studying down the road. Also, is Providence a Catholic school? If so, you might want to think about whether your son would be comfortable if there, if he is not Catholic.

My son is a non practicing Catholic, so that’s not an issue. We can pay for any of the schools, but I wonder if PC is worth the 40K more it will run over 4 years?

I wish I could get an answer out of him regarding why he prefers it over UVM…oh well.

Perhaps you could have him sit down and write the positives and negatives he sees about PC and UVM. This might help the two of you to decide which option is best for him and for your family. Good luck!

“I wonder if PC is worth the 40K more it will run over 4 years?”

Objectively, I don’t think it is. But if your son is going to be miserable at UVM (hard to imagine for a snowboarder!), that might change the story.

Northeastmom, I think that’s a great idea, we’ll do that tonight.

Hanna, he definitely won’t be miserable at UVM, Burlington is fantastic. I think he just had it in his mind that he would go to a smaller school and he really liked Providence and Loyola Maryland when we visited (Loyola waitlisted him, along with 2,000 others, so I think that’s off the table).

Personally we would like him to go to UVM, our older son is a sophomore at Champlain and it would be nice to have them in the same town for 2 years, plus both schools are on roughly the same calendars.
