UW Madison Housing

Is the down payment for UW housing refundable if I decide to go to another school?

Academic Year 2014-15

The terms and conditions listed under Sections 12 and 13 in your contract fully explain the cancellation policy for University Residence Halls contracts. Here are a few highlights:

If you are not attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you can be released from your University Residence Halls contract. To cancel, please log in to your My UW Housing portal and click on the button located on the left hand side that states, “I am no longer attending.” Notification by May 1 ensures a full refund of your housing deposit.

In the past a written notification was required, separate from telling the university. Is the online box enough currently?

Do remember to notify BOTH UW and Res Halls to get deposits back- merely notifying one will not let the other know.

What’s the best res hall to pick on the lake shore side for a freshman going into engineering?

You will increase your chances if you chose a dorm with a special program that interests you.

Don’t worry as much about your chances as you do in ranking your most to least favorites. Future engineers- remember most of your classes will NOT be on the engineering campus- math, chemistry and physics are likely to be in their buildings. Easy enough to get around campus for young, healthy students. Pick the place you want to spend your evenings and weekends in. Remember your parents did not use closeness to their jobs as the only factor in choosing where to buy the family home. The “best” dorm to choose is the one that appeals to you most as a person, not your major. There is diversity in personalities in all fields.
