Academics and Med School setup: Michigan, it even has a top Med School which I heard slightly favors UM undergrads.
Social: Both are great
College Town: Honestly, I have never been to Madison, but I heard Ann Arbor is basically the best.
I would be very concerned about this:
Michigan is in much better financial shape. It also has a much higher four year graduation rate.
Academically, Umich hands down. It’s got a better program rankings for premed, grad school is top 10 in nation and undergrad is a feeder into it, and it’s got better overall rankings for many other fields of study across the board.
Socially, UW has more people, so make of that what you will. Both have excellent college towns, as well as somewhat depressing winters, so it’s pretty much a wash.
For the record though, I’ve yet to meet someone here at Michigan who hasn’t at least liked this school; most absolutely love it.
Both schools are great. For you, you should pick the cheaper one as you have a long way ahead of you in medical school. Where is your home state? If you are OOS for both, UMich may be better for financial aid although UW has a slightly lower CoA.
Thank you all! I should’ve written more. I am an aspiring Neurosurgeon, and well I just want to be prepared for all the challenges and difficulties I will encounter in medical school. I am majoring in psychology, but I’m thinking of switching majors, neurobiology or neuroscience. Thank you all for your help! This is a tough decision.
@billcsho yes I’m OOS. I’m from IL. I’m just not sure about where to go. Being first generation in my family, and having no one to talk to about this process is quite difficult. But I hope to make the best decision possible.
If cost of attendance is similar, or not a concern, I would recommend Michigan. If Wisconsin costs less, and cost of attendance is a concern, I would recommend Wisconsin. You can’t lose either way.
