UWC Applicants for the 2013 school year!

I hope the interviews went well for those of you in Singapore who had them already and good luck to everyone who is still waiting! (I’m trying to convert the time in my head so I think I did that right)
I’d love to hear how they went!

Hello to all the other Singaporeans! (: My interview’s at 1720 and I just found this thread + The Student Room’s thread, heh. Hope everyone’s interviews went well, mind inviting me to the FB group? I’m http://www.facebook.com/persiflage</a> :smiley: Good luck guys!

I think my interview did not go very well :frowning: My answers didn’t make me seem very… smart or good at critical thinking. They just weren’t good. The sound was a bit choppy too. Now I keep thinking of what I should have said. I’m so worried for the results! :’(

@fruitloopery hi!! Me too ): ):
I kept rambling and I could tell they felt I wasn’t answering their questions (I wasn’t really, tbh). They even told me to summarize what I said in a single sentence for one of the questions. And I don’t think my answers had much depth or coherence. SIGH D: but the good thing was that I was generally quite enthusiastic I think (hope!)

@emellwie hi there! :slight_smile: I’ve added you as a friend on FB already! Good luck for your interview later on! All the best ^^

I talked to them about free-ranged chickens, and that I prefer that option over those that are caged. I just remembered that. I am dead. …Like who talks about chickens TT^TT

Hey Guys
i would truly be helped if someone here Tells me what was asked in the Interview
Also Anyone From India Here
Thanks a ton

I am also very interested in applying for this… It seems to good to be true! :slight_smile: I have been researching it like none other. I do have one question though, and @windowpainting16 might be able to help. Your list if achievements is incredible! Kudos :slight_smile: my question is, how did you manage to integrate all of your qualifications into your essays? I feel that I am at least moderately well qualified, but am having trouble including these in response to the prompts. Advice? Thanks a ton!

@kylou18: I’m happy to help! The key to the essays is the same as the key to any college application essays. To prepare, I read a book about writing college essays. I’m happy to tell you what worked for me, however. Most of my essays, except for the book one, were focused on a specific event. If you make your essays on too broad a topic, you risk being unable to go into the detail necessary for a convincing essay. They want to see how you react to difficult or challenging situations. For each of the prompts, think of an event that is related and write about that.

Hey Buddies any indian here

Hi, all! I’m new in this thread.

I’m a sophomore in the US. I’ve been interested in applying to the UWC program since I first heard of it, which was about two years ago. It looks excellent, like a really great experience, but I’m nervous about the application.

One of my main questions is what extracurriculars to cite on the application. I participate in a number of community service groups. Mainly, I’m part of Honor Society and my school’s Community Service group (there’s no special name for it). I also tutor elementary students on my own, once or twice a week. I’m not involved in sports or other clubs, mostly because my school is small and has barely any extracurricular options. (I do walk for an hour each morning, but Walking Club doesn’t sound particularly good on applications.)

I am very community service-oriented, but I’m hesitant to only list service groups on the application. For one, I know that college admissions always look for well-rounded candidates (I’m not sure how similar this admissions process is.) I consider myself to be well-rounded - I enjoy walks, admiring art, reading, etc. I enjoy creative writing especially, and keep up a bimonthly blog regarding my writing (with no followers, btw - it’s mostly just a fun sort of record.) Plus, I participated in (and won) NaNoWriMo this year and in 2010, if you guys are familiar with the program. (You’re basically writing a 50,000-word novel in a month. NOT easy.)

I don’t want to drone on any longer, but… what are your thoughts on listing extracurriculars? I could mention creative writing, which I spend maybe 4 hours a week on, or Honor Society, which I only attend 1.5 hours every other week. Which is a safer bet? My thought is that mentioning creative writing would make me appear more well-rounded… but if I did, should I mention the blog?

Thanks!

hello everyone i am from Hong Kong
i have recently submitted my online application form, choosing Italy as my first choice
i’m so nervous about this year’s application as this is my second and last time applying
i wish everyone all the best!

@ichilove: As much as I wish I could have a simple answer to your question, I’m afraid I don’t have one. Your application is the one thing they will have to learn about you before the interviews. A perfect application has a delicate balance between showing well-roundedness and showing a common thread between each activity. You want to show one person–you. Any of those things would contribute to that picture.

@ichilove: By the way, go writers!! I tried to do NaNo this year but wasn’t able to finish because of studying for the ACT… :frowning: I did reach half-way though! My novel was historical fiction. What is yours about?

@ichilove I also have a website/blog. I put the URL under my activities/ hobbies. I think my site (It’s not really a blog) really shows who I am, so I thought it was a good thing to include in the application. It is also linked to my twitter. I know that whoever is looking at my application has a lot of ways to figure out who I really am if they decide to look for it, and I’m completely ok with that. That might be a way that you could show off who you really are.

Ok this is probably going to sound incredibly stupid, and I’m probably just looking in the wrong places, but when is the US application due? I know all the recommendations are due Jan. 10th, but is the entire application too?

I’m pretty sure the whole app is due Jan. 10th, but I’m not sure… I was also actually wondering about something though, in the beginning of the app it talks about parts B and C but I can’t find them anywhere…

@windowpainting16 Thanks for responding. On my NaNo project - I’m not sure how to describe it. Some mix of realistic and literary? It’s about a young woman from the suburbs who moves to NYC and her experiences there as a student/waitress. A lot of it is backstory and reflection.

@lindzmm Thanks for your input!

@BoneHO I’m from Hong Kong too! Yay : ) What school are you from?

I’m actually super glad I found this forum because I’m (figuratively) crapping my pants about the application process… IT’S JUST SO SCARY!

My first choice is Maastricht mainly because I want to continue learning German and all.
APTITUDE TEST NEXT SATURDAY! D=

I’m a bit too late to say this but NANOWRIMO WOOT WOOT
I won last year, didn’t do it this year because I perfectly understood that it would kill me :P
