@windowpainting16 thank you so much! I am seriously sooo nervous for these essays… I feel like they’re what will make or break my application! Aaah! Good thing there’s still plenty if time left… Gulp.

Hey everyone, I thought I’d open up a little discussion. I was wondering what you all thought about the UWC’s that taught not only the IB, but also younger kids, particularly UWCSEA (Singapore) and UWC Maastricht.
Personally, I was not going to put either on my list in the beging because I felt that the schools would be completely different than what I was after, and I still think they are very different than the other UWC’s, but I’m starting to become more interested in them as I do my research. The school in Singapore particularly looks like a spectacular school with amazing facilities. To me, it seems more like a “normal boarding school” than a UWC. I kind of have this picture of a UWC where all the teachers go by their first names and you’re completely isolated and I don’t see that at UWCSEA, but it still seems like an appealing school, just for different reasons.
As far as UWC Maastricht goes, I saw a 3D video tour of what the campus is going to look like that opens in the fall and it’s beautiful. Similar to UWCSEA, it seems like a great school, just different. I really don’t know any better way of explaining it.
Anyways, I was just wondering what all of you thought about it. Also, I know there are Singaporeans on here, so if you’ve been to or know more about UWCSEA, any info would be greatly appreciated!

I haven’t really thought of it that way because when I applied, I immediately gravitated towards Maastricht and Atlantic because of the languages offered there.

I think at the end of the day, they both pretty much follow the UWC mission and values and Maastricht is so amazing, I think I’d be living a dream if I get to go there…

I’m applying for Fall of 2013 as a current junior. I am soo nervous, this is a huge dream for me! I’ve been hearing about it since I was little, since my mom grew up near the UWC in the states. After moving across the country, I became good friends with someone who ended up going to UWC Mahindra. That pretty much solidified that I knew it was something I wanted to do. I’m also kind of nervous about the influence of GPA- I only have a 3.7, but it’s full of APs and my extracurriculars are off the charts, so I was wondering if they balance each other out? If anybody knows any tips or has advice for applying for me that would be amazing!

totally flunked my aptitude test…
goodbye uwc

@janicechen don’t give up quite yet. you don’t know how others did, or how hard the test was written to be - it’s quite possible that they wrote it to be a challenge. There have been so many times when I’ve thought I’d completely and utterly failed a test, and then it would turn out that I did just fine :)

Hey guys! I’m a current Sophomore (so if I went next year 9t would be my junior year) in America. I was wondering how much it matters whether or not you are a Sophomore or Junior applying. I read somewhere (possibly on here; I don’t remember) that last year they only admitted Juniors! Anyone know if that true or not? If it is, do you think that will also be the case this year? I really want to go next year, mainly because I’m slightly impatient and the thought of waiting a whole year to apply again might just kill me! Are you guys Sophomores or Juniors?

Is a 174 PSAT score (93%- critical reading, 86%- math, and writing-92%) good enough to get into UWC. I am a 4.0 sophomore taking pre IB classes and I am involved in 7 EC such as leadership programs, volunteer programs, and I peer tutor. I also have over 200 volunteer hours. Lastly I was just nominated as an international ambassador for people to people. Even with all this will my low PSAT score bring me down? What we’re the percentiles of other applicants and current students?

@HT2465 your other academics and ECs sound amazing. I can’t say for sure about how much they look at the PSAT, but it definitely sounds like your other credentials more than make up for it. You have a much better chance than most people (including me - I can’t see myself being removed from the competition because of academics, but my age plus my lack of service/activities that directly relate to the UWC mission DEFINITELY bring me down)!

HT, it’s very difficult to be chosen as a sophomore even if you are phenomenal. Your chances are better as a junior.

I am at a point where I’m worried that my standardized test scores don’t accurately reflect my intelligence, and I was wondering how much they factor test scores in? I took both the SAT and the ACT for the first time, not thinking I would use them for anything, and now I have to. Help please!

There is no “student profile” for the UWCs so it isn’t really possible to predict. I think it is worth doing the online application and hoping for the best. Good luck!

Hi Sohrab~ Sorry, before I talk about UWC stuff, I’m studying a book at the moment with someone called Sohrab in, and I’ve never heard of anyone else with that name. It’s a pretty cool name!

Hey everyone!
Sorry I’m late to join. I’m a junior in the U.S.- I’m about to turn in my application! This thread is comforting- I’m literally so nervous about getting in. And we have to wait until Spring to hear back from them!! Ahh- I have so much anxienty building up.

How are you guys doing with your applications? I have finished all of my letters but I haven’t nailed down my topics for the essays yet. It’s all quite nerve-wracking.

I change my essays all the time, but I think I’m finally done. I still have to do the book one though. I have been done with 500 word one for a while.

I’ve done all of my essays and feel really good about them. I’m just waiting on final test grades to come in for the ACT/SAT, and then I’ll be ready to send it in! Do you know when the deadline for transcripts/etc is?

I have 4 of the short answers done and the other 2 I know exactly what I’m writing on, I just haven’t put it in words yet. For the personal statement, I know what I’m writing and I’ve outlined it but it’s not written yet.

do you guys think it would look better to turn in the app early/ would it look back to turn it in on like January 8th, right before it is due?

I have drafts for three essays and I know what I’m going to write about the other three, I haven’t even started the personal statement, I’ve self-reported all my scores and put in my activities, and I’ve sent out all my recs. One of the recs is done, the other two aren’t. Definitely nervewracking.
@criver12 I don’t think that should matter - just get it in before the deadline and not the day of.

What does everybody think of the headshot? Are you going to submit one? What picture are you going to use?
