UWC Applicants for the 2013 school year!

My piano instructor and her husband both speak Quenya fluently, and have engravings on their wedding bands!

I’m a native speaker of Serbo-Croatian, which is a pluricentric language, with four standard variants spoken in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, I also understand a bit of Pannonian Rusyn (a Slavic dialect spoken by Pannonian Rusyns in the Bačka region of Serbia, where I live). I’m fluent in English and I know a few phrases in German and Italian.

@applesauce21
I know which country Quenya is from! Elves are my favorite race of Middle-earth! :)

I speak English, Pig Latin, and conversational Spanish (I’ve taken it for four years at school). I took Chinese for a year but all the teacher did was show us Chinese movies IN ENGLISH. It was a waste of time and very disappointing. I spoke Russian when I was little with my nanny but I’ve lost it all. I’d love to become more fluent in Spanish and learn Arabic.

@Stuffzhappenin I am currently living in the UK :)

I speak fluent English and German, Pretty good French…not fluent but I can understand a lot and conversational Arabic. I would really like to learn Chinese,Spanish and more Arabic.

@mirvinvitela Oh. My. God. THAT’S INCREDIBLE!! And if I ever find a guy willing to do that, I know it will be true love XD (but if he wants black speech then he’s dumped…:P)
@v00jin Yay! Another tolkien fan! I am torn between elves and hobbits. I mean seriously, a race which has TWO BREAKFASTS (I love breakfast) versus a race which taught Ents to speak. That’s a tough call :P

eeeeeeelves
well hobbits are amazing, but ELVES!
okay, hobbits, true.
hobbits. elves. this is a difficult decision.

Also, I kinda think I want to learn Esperanto :)

Hi guys! I’m a Pakistani who is going to apply next month. My top college choice at the moment is UWCRCN. I would greatly appreciate any constructive advice regarding the application process.

My son is an English native speaker. He speaks Spanish (AP 4 last May) and Chinese. He passed the HSK level 3 (B1 equivalent level) in October and will take level 4 in March and 5 in June. The HSK is the Chinese TOEFL. He is currently studying in China. I’m not sure what he’ll do for an interview because he signed an agreement to stay in China until the end of his program in June.

So we all are focusing on what “adventures” lie ahead at a UWC, but if a selective few of us are accepted, have we thought about what we’re leaving behind? Friends, family, boyfriend/girlfriend, pets, familiar roads, your favourite resturant. I know one girl who couldn’t take the distance and withdrew from Mahindra after completing a year. She loved the experience and she doesn’t regret it but she still missed home tremendously. It’s easier if you’re going to college, since majority of your friends are making the same step in life.

You have to be sure if you accept a Davis scholarship (U.S. students) because you sign an agreement to complete the 2 years OR repay the cost of your scholarship (90K)!

For me that’s not something I’m afraid of - not because I don’t love what I already have, but because I am ready to leave it. It is either going to happen next year or the year after, and purging it off any longer is simply delaying the inevitable

@Asad876, I don’t know what the Pakistani national committee’s application procedure is like. You might find more information on The Student Room website. It is a more international forum. There may be a Facebook for UWC Pakistan where you could ask questions. Maybe the best way to prepare would be to read the UWC website and consider your personal experiences and how you could both benefit and contribute to a UWC campus. Good luck! I know all the students benefit from living and learning together in a diverse international community. Best wishes.

@purplesweater I’m moving after this year, anyway, because of my dad’s job. I’ve lived here for 11 years, so moving will definitely be a change, but since a change is happening anyway I’d much rather that change be UWC :)

On another note, while stalking the UWC facebook page, I saw that ANDREW SLACK IS GOING TO BE AT UWC-USA THIS WEEKEND.

aaaaaaah. The Harry Potter Alliance is one of my favorite organizations, but I’ve never been as involved in it as I’d like to be, and now its co-founder (who I’ve had one two-minute conversation with! woo!) is speaking at UWC and is very likely to inspire an HPA chapter there…just more incentive to get in. I’d finally have a chapter! I got super excited but disappointed that I’m not going to see his talk when I read that.

What’s HPA? I’m a massive harry potter fan but never heard of that :L

Yes, I thought of you when I got the latest UWC newsletter. I hope you don’t think that’s creepy. I do think you would find some kindred spirits at UWC.

Here’s the blurb from their website:
“DID YOU EVER WISH THAT HARRY POTTER WAS REAL? WELL IT KIND OF IS.
Just as Dumbledore’s Army wakes the world up to Voldemort’s return, works for equal rights of house elves and werewolves, and empowers its members, we: Work with partner NGOs in alerting the world to the dangers of global warming, poverty, and genocide. Work with our partners for equal rights regardless of race, gender, and sexuality. Encourage our members to hone the magic of their creativity in endeavoring to make the world a better place. Join our army to make the world a safer, more magical place, and let your voice be heard!”

Apollo6, that’s actually awesome, thank you!

So, what else is going on in everyone’s lives, other than waiting for UWC?
I’m currently basically living at school because it’s show week for our school’s musical! I’m running sound for it, so I’ve got a mix of showtunes and sound effects running through my head constantly. It’s proving a rather good distraction from waiting, actually (of course, I ruined the distraction for myself by coming back here!).

The new semester started last week, and I’m going crazy with new classes, plus a few of my clubs (Student Council, FCCLA, Model UN, Forensics, and PARDY) all have their big deadlines coming up. I feel like I’m literally running around constantly, taking short breaks to sleep (occasionally), or waiting for the 20th (constantly).

Holy cow! When I was here a few months ago (shows you how reliable I am on this forum) there were like 19 pages or something. I never would have imagined so many people were interested in UWC but I’m really happy it’s gained so much popularity :)

For those who don’t know me, I’m a first-year at Atlantic College (the one in the UK). If any of you applied or have any questions about life here (it’s awesome no joke), send me a message or reply or something (I’m still not too familiar with the technical parts of CC). I’d be happy to helpppp :)
