@lunascreatures I went on a half scholarship too. It was the most incredible program ever! I took creative writing as my major and English History and Culture as my minor. I loved the writing class, and the history one was alright. The days that we went out into the city were great, but I personally felt like the teacher spent a little too much time lecturing when there was so much we could have done that would have been interactive. It makes sense though because he had a lot to teach in so little time. It really is an amazing program and I recommend it to anyone. It was the best summer of my life!
The classes you take depend a lot on where you go, especially because a teacher can make or break it. I know when I went, some of the classes I heard really good things about were History’s secrets, Creative writing, and Drama. I’m personally not really into acting, but if you are, it was very cool. They did a shakespearian play the way that they used to learn them with a scroll containing only their lines, so watching the end result was hilarious. If you have any questions about it, just ask
Also, one of my friends that I met at Oxford went back last summer and went to Cambridge, so if you want specific info about the city or courses offered there I can ask her for you.

@lindzmm Well, looks like I’m definitely applying! The course guarantee date has passed, but the deadline for scholarships isn’t for a little while longer. Thanks for the info!

@lunascreatures I’m pretty sure if you get in with a scholarship you automatically get your first choice. In my experience, I don’t know anyone that didn’t get their first choice so don’t worry about that!

@lindzmm I’m fine with not getting my absolute first choice, but now I have to pick whether I want to take one of the Spanish programs or the Cambridge one…decisions, decisions! I think I’m leaning towards Cambridge.

My kids are into languages so they did StarTalk programs. University of Mississippi has a nice Summer College for High School students where you can take courses for college credit. If you have high ACT or SAT scores you may be able to attend for free.

I do a program through University of Wisconsin called the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth, and you can choose an area of study and take a three week intensive graduate level course in areas like Applied Linguistics, Biology, Logic, etc. I’ve been doing it for going on 7 years, and I’d definitely recommend it!

Wow, reading this thread has given me such an insight into the application process! I’m applying through the NZ Committee, but I was born in Burma It’s so great to hear from those applying to UWC too. I haven’t even told my friends yet…

Does anyone know what the interviews will be like? And who’s really nervous about pre-selections?? I know I am! :S

WOW…this truly has helped me too.
I just finished filling my application.
I`m the best badminton player, best table tennis player, best swimmer, best orator , best all rounder in school but I have only 50(max) hours of community service, which is where I feel a bit insecure.
Im applying from the India committee but its really exciting to see so many
competitors
`. Well let hope we all get past the pre-interview rounds.......ALL THE BEST!!!!!

p.s. In India we dont have the GPA system so if there is anyone who could tell me how good my % should be …

p.p.s. my ICSE % is 92%

@TanmayJ I’m not sure how your system works either, but to me it sounds like you are really talented and well rounded and all of that plays a part in the admissions process. I personally will be really interested to see how it all turns out because I can’t immagine myself possibly doing more community service (Probably 10 hours a week) and I play guitar, interned for the mayor, and on the youth commission board (mayors youth advisory board). Basically, my EC’s are very strong, but my academics are only good. Not outstanding. I’m interested to see how it all weights out.

Thnx@lindzmm…all we can do now is keep our fingers crossed!!

Thanks all that replied with summer programs! I’ll look into them all :)

What would you have to give up if you took a place at UWC? That was a question my D’s college interviewers asked her.

Always having my mom around for me to turn to and talk to if something goes wrong. Having my kitty-cat purr on my lap when I feel sick. The direct connection with the friends I have here. (Although I would definitely make a lot of new ones, there is something to be said for the people who have known you since childhood, and put up with you since then. )
Any lingering illusion of living in a comfortable, easy world. The sense that even though I’m ready to experience the world, I still have a year or two left of “childhood” if I want to fall back on it.
But I’d willingly give it up, for a place at UWC.

hi guys!
i was wondering if there was anyone following this thread that’s applying through Pearson as their national committee??

Ooof, just read through like 24 pages of this thread after not looking at it for a couple of months.

@Stuffzhappenin, it was you who asked if there were other TCKs right? Well, here’s another one, though I’ll be applying next year, not this one. Unlike you, I haven’t lived in loads of different countries, just four months in France, and then 8 years here in Tunisia.
I always find the where are you from question tricky, cos though I am like completely English for 5 generations (though i think I’m actually 1/32th scottish!!!), I am wholly unEnglish in some respects. At the same time however, I am definitely not Tunisian in lots of ways, so yeah…

We’re moving back to England (North Lancashire) this summer, so that’s gonna be a huge leap. I’ll be going into year 11, but it’s kinda complicated, because right now I’m in the French equivalent of year 11, but when we return, I’m gonna go back and do it again in the English system where I’ll be the right age. You see, in the French system (which I’ve been in since I was 7), they move people forward a year when they’re bright, and hold people back one or more years when they fail.

Anyway, I speak fluent English (!!!), and fluent French (am in a French school…), ok Spanish (3rd year of study), and a little arabic. Also I did 1 year of latin, but it’s has completely disappeared from my brain :P

Also, my favourite place I’ve visited is probably the country where I live cos it’s so diverse and you can get mountains up north (though quite small) and sandy desert down south. Plus, there’s like roman ruins everywhere, so you can just walk inot fields and find roman pottery in the ground I’d love to visit New Zealand, and visit all the places they filmed LOTR (Lord of the Rings) and the Hobbit set!!!

Finally (WHOA! Long post) my top UWCs would be Pearson (need a full scholarship to go), UWCRCN, then … Atlantic??? Still working it out, but I’ve got another year so And another after that if I fail.

Sorry the post was so long, the words were just flowing out of my fingers!!

Holy I just realized how long it’s been since I was last on here…
@dinogiraffe I’m a Canadian applicant too if that’s what you mean, are you as well? What province are you from?

2 weeks (if they stay on schedule) until US applicants find out about the interview!

@lunascreatures More like a week and a half… but who’s counting? I still don’t have my grades to send to them, but I should hopefully have them by tomorrow, so I hope they don’t mind. Ahh, getting nervous!

Woops, yeah! I’m almost glad that I had the time wrong - it means I’m not as anxious as I could be. I am very anxious that my counselor might not have gotten my grades in yet, though - she’s been busy and my communication with her have been very brief. If it turns out she hasn’t, I hope they allow it to be late even though we’ve had these grades for a while now…
If anything, I can probably submit them, as I have a copy of my transcript. Still, though, it’s scary.

My problem was that I wasn’t allowed to talk to my counselor because she was only supposed to talk to people about switching classes for the first two weeks. When I finally convinced them to let me talk to her, she told me I needed to order my transcripts. Then she started telling me how if I had gone to the senior presentation I would have known. She didn’t realize I wasn’t a senior, haha. Then she told me to go talk to someone else who could email me my transcript in a PDF that I could email to the UWC, but she told me to email her, and she hasn’t gotten back to me, so I figure she’ll send it when she gets back to school tomorrow. I hear you though, it’s stressful!
