Hey everyone, just joining the thread. Anxiously checking my national council’s website every day! Can’t wait for applications to come out. I just learned about UWC this past summer, so thank goodness I don’t have to wait too long as opposed to those who’ve had UWC on their mind for years. Anyone (or should i say everyone) nervous about rejection? I dont want to obsess and get my hopes up , but I dont want to be the kid who nonchantly fills out the form, write a little essay and that’s it @_@.

so i am probably going to be that one obnoxious kid who just joins in the conversation sporadically but I’ve been super busy with school and didn’t have time! Anyways how is everyone else’s year going? And my favourite subjects are English and French, but you guys have such intense subjects, I only wish my school taught sign language!!
@YogurtHamster I think it’s safe to say we’re all nervous about rejection! The application is coming so close and I feel like I’ve been dreaming of going to a UWC for so long that I can’t imagine how terrible it will be if (when, probably) I don’t get in. I completely know what you mean though- on the one hand I don’t want to have too-high expectations but I also want to give it my best
Just wondering, how did everyone hear about UWC?

Hey everyone! I’ve been wanting to go to one of these schools for about a year now, and can’t believe its almost time to apply. I was wondering if anyone knew any of the colleges had a photography program or a writing program? Also, I was wondering the differences between the colleges. I know it isn’t ultimately our choice which one we are admitted to, but how does the organization decide? Do they take into account which ones you list as your top 5? I hope I get to see some of you at the interviews and maybe even next year as classmates! (:

My favorite subjects are Psychology, Art and Serbian.

@coexistxx
from what I’ve read, they do take choice into account, but it’s likely that you won’t get your first choice (half of US applicants go to Armand Hammer, for example, and I doubt half put it as their top choice).
@YogurtHamster yeah, I’m obsessing too. Since I’m younger, I know that my chances of getting in are far smaller than they would be normally, and at the same time whether I get into UWC or not will decide a lot about what my family is doing next year (since I’m definitely moving after this year). So yes. cue the freaking out :P

@lunascreatures I may have an answer to your first question. My friend’s (who told me about UWC) older sister was going to apply a few years back and was in the same position as you. She emailed the NC to inquire about it and found out that (and I’m just relaying information and do not know of this is true or not) the schools have insurance for the students, but in order for that to apply, they must be 16 yrs or older. Apparently they told her that they could get insurance for students under 16, but it would be more work and effort they would have to put into it. For that reason, they rarely admit anyone under 16. Again, this could very well be inaccurate information.

Hello everyone! I am currently studying IB year 1 in Hong Kong.
My brother went to UWC USA around 4 years ago and his UWC experiences were unbelievably amazing.
Last year I applied for the same school but unfortunately my application was a failure. There were several reasons to explain my failure but the main point is that the headmaster of LPC, the UWC school I’m applying through, has changed and therefore there are a lot of changes to the admission requirements or the way they choose students. After talking with my friends who are currently studying in LPC, I have a better idea of what kind of students they are looking for at the moment.
I will apply again this year but my first choice will become Adriatic while Pearson is my second choice. Can someone who’s studying in Adriatic or Pearson tell me more about the school lives there? Thank you!

@moramora I’ve already decided i’m going to pour my heart into the application, pull a wax theatrical afterwards and if I get an interview spazz out again. It’s gotten to the point were i’ve made a comparative table with UWC and the reasons of why I should stay home, just to help me cope. However, you can imagine which side is winning. Best of luck to us both and if we don’t get in - I suppose there are enough tissue boxes to share around for a month or so. I’ve already told myself if I dont get in i’ll do some retail therapy and buy something shiny to distract myself from the grief!

@lunacreatures Despite your age I still say go for it.

Hi everyone!

I’m applying for UWC this coming year for the 2013 school year. I’m an 11th grader this year so I would have one extra year of high school but that’s okay. I’m trying to get into contact with alumni if anyone knows others who attended a UWC school, please let me know!

Your so qualified as a sophomore… Good luck!

@lindzmm thank you for telling me! that makes a lot of sense, especially for the non-US UWCs. If I do get in I think it’s very likely that I’ll be sent to Armand Hammer.

Hi I recently found out about UWC and it is my dream. Any information about the application process in the US would be amazing. Also any info on what they are looking for in an individual would be great. I have a pretty diverse set of extracurriculars and a 4.2 GPA. Any tips would be great! Thanks!

It’s so exciting how many of us are on here and will be able to go through this together!

@SamanthaJ Here’s what I’ve gathered about this application process. I can’t guarantee that it’s correct.
The application will become available in October (probably late October), and will be due in January. It is lengthy and consists of 3(?) short essays and a personal statement. Probably personal questions about things such as where you are from etc. as well (At least I think…). You also must supply them with test scores, either the ACT, SAT, PSAT, or PLAN, and three letters of rec, A teacher, counselor, and extracurricular adviser. Sometime in February, we will be contacted and told if we were selected for an interview. Only 100-125 people are asked to interview per year. The interviews take place in March and early April and final decisions are mailed out in late April I believe.

As far as what kind of a person they are looking for, no one can know for sure. I guess we can infer from previous applicants that they are looking for students who are academically strong, so they can handle the vigor of the IB, and someone who demonstrates interest in the mission that UWC stands for, which would be making the world a better place, community service, diversity, culture, etc. I hope this helps.

On a completely different note. Last night I had a dream that I was accepted, except I got my admissions letter on April 1st, and at the end of they day they called me and said “April Fools”. More like a nightmare :P

I was just wondering… obviously no one knows for sure, but the friend of mine that told me about UWC is also applying (which I didn’t know about until recently), but she was born and lived in Norway until she was 5, visits twice a year, and basically is very Norwegian. We were both kind of wondering if that would help or hurt her, considering they probably want Americans to represent America. I’m not sure though. Thoughts?
P.S. Her first choice school is the one in RCN because she has family there…

Pearson students just completed the Great Lake Walk- Ultramarathon. It is a 56 km run/walk around Cowichan Lake. They sponsor a rest station as one of the service projects where food, drinks, clothing changes and potable toilets are located. Those not volunteering at the rest stop do the course The event starts at 5 am. The first runner finished in 5 hours, the last at 7pm (14 hours). The town is located over 100km away from campus, so either they camped overnight, or got up extremely early for this event. Temperatures ranged from 10c in the morning to nearly 30c in the early afternoon. My D and I were also volunteering, at another rest stop, and the Pearson kids did a great job of representing the school and ideals of UWC!

@lindzmm I’d think that’d help - if she’s lived in america since she was 5, then she has the benefit of two cultures and the ability to bring both to a UWC (and maybe help bridge the gap between cultures). I think she’d be sent to somewhere other than RCN, though, because they have Norwegian representatives covered. I hope that it helps, cause that’s true about me, too - not to that extent (I never lived in Russia or Ukraine, born in California), but I’m fluent in Russian and still have relatives that I visit overseas.

and in regards to your dream - I had something kiiiinda similar, but without the nightmarish aspect. My birthday is April 7th, which is a Sunday this year, and we know that interviews will be around that time, so I dreamt that I’d be accepted for an interview that would take place on the 6th. I really hope that happens, eek! No dream about whether or not I’d get accepted, though, which is good; I’d kinda freak out if that happened.

Sorry this is a bit late but I just thought I’d comment and answer your questions.

@limdzmm: The application includes 1 longer personal statement, 3 short answers, and one piece of writing about a book you’ve read this year, although I’m not sure if it changed year to year.
@yogurtmonkey: About anxiety, that’s pretty much what happens. From January until when interview notifications came out I was freaking out, then I counted down my days until the interview. From the interview until the decision, I kept going over every little detail in my head and I was shaking when I opened the email. I don’t think I’ve ever been that excited or anxious for anything in my life and I’m a concert pianist!

Is there anybody who could help me with application process in Serbia? :)

Does Serbia have a national committee? If so, check they’re website and they should have a description of the application process. You could also contact the national committee and ask them. If they don’t have a national committee you have to apply a different way that should be explained on the overall UWC website.

Btw, go Serbia. My mom is Serbian.

Yes, it has. I checked and now, I am waiting for the application to come out. I can’t wait. Thank you, anyways. Thank you for your wishes too. Where are you from? Are you applying too this year? :)
