UWC Applicants for the 2013 school year!

DBQ hands down! I’ve always been good at analyzing documents, but I find that with FRQ’s I start writing and then half way through decide that I want to talk about something totally different… Not a good feeling, lol!

Mm, DBQs
In my AP english class, though, we had a synthesis essay (which is basically a DBQ) about what to do with the US Post office, and one of the sources was literally just a photo of a post office. In an essay about the decline in funding and possible solutions to the problem. Apparently, last year they had an essay in which one of the sources was just a picture of a penny. Grrrr. Still, I actually like those essays.

@knoxandonyx

Greeks still win, hands down. Then Egyptians as a really close second. Aztecs last. Weird fact-I have some Aztec blood in my family. And I am one of those people to go into ancient mythology rants. Do not get me started on the mediocrity of Roman mythology. Just don’t do it haha.

@lindzmm oh I know exactly what you mean about changing your mind…in my last English essay, I wrote my thesis and halfway through the second paragraph figured out what I ACTUALLY wanted to say and how to say it, so I ended up crossing out half of my intro paragraph and rewriting it at the very end of my paper. My teacher does not mind stuff like that at all, luckily, and makes us write in pen to practice having to do that on the actual AP exam.

YES, EXACTLY @mirvinvitela!!! The mediocrity of the Romans! Huzzah! They’re crazies! And copycats! (Especially copycats!) Architecture, blah, blah. They would have gotten nowhere if not for the Greeks!

(Greeks and Egyptians tied in my book–perhaps even the edge to Egypt, though it is borderline blasphemy. Aztecs right on their tails, but Aztecs>Mayans.)

@knoxandonyx I never thought it would happen, but I seem to have found someone who is as obsessive about good mythology as I am. And oh my god, I subjected my little brother to a rant just this morning about how Roman mythology cannot even compare to any other mythology, just for the sake of it being completely based off of Greek mythology. I’m to a point where even Norse mythology beats Roman, which is when you know it’s bad. And yes about the Aztecs and the Mayans! I have a special place in my heart for the Mayans, mostly because my name is Maya and I’ve visited a lot of Mayan ruins, but the Aztecs were way more b.a.

whaat no way. I love the norse gods, i totally don’t agree with what you just said (apart from the fact hat Greek is the best … ) Out of curiosity, has anyone here read the Percy Jackson series? What do you think?

Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, and the Kane Chronicles- all over them! Rick Riordan is a god himself. I tore through those books in one sitting! Absolutely loved them. Anyone else?

In middle school, i was so totally in love with Annabeths and Percy’s relationship. I thought it was perfect, I seriously idolized it. I got all the books lined up on my shelf hahah. Plus they gave Greek mythology such a popularity boost for the new generation.

I’ve read it, and enjoyed it, and I actually met Rick Riordan and have a signed copy of The Lost Hero! I stopped reading the (new) series after The Lost Hero, because it really seemed like too much - it took up a lot of time that I could spend reading other (more…enriching :P) books, and I felt like the story reached a good conclusion after the first series. But it was a great series for introducing people who don’t know much about Greek mythology to Greek mythology - and strengthening any already-existing love for it - and one concept that I enjoyed about the second series was the Greek camp being unaware of the existence of a ROMAN camp.

I never read any of the Kane Chronicles, though! Well, something like two pages in Barnes&Noble, but I don’t think that counts.

Yeah, i haven’t read the new series either. Besides, its ok to just read something aimless every once in a while :)

Read the Kane Chronicles! Honestly, despite being slightly blasphemous, the Kane Chronicles are better written than Rick Riordan’s other stuff with a better plot and characters. And, on the point of frivolous reading- I personally read a lot of heavy and complex things, so it’s important to balance it out with fun reading :)

Oh, definitely. I read a lot of aimless stuff. I just read a lot in general…yay, books :D

@mirvinvitela: Yay! Another enthusiast!!! Pleased to meet you! I, too, thought that the odds were not in my favor, in meeting someone as fervent as me …
And I mean, really. When you can’t even take the time to rename Apollo, and basically just worship him as one of THE GREEK GODS YOU WERE TRYING TO STEAL, there is something wrong with you/your culture.
It is pretty bad when Romans are worse than the Norse; the Norse are pretty high on the totem pole (maybe just the Romans and … yeah, just the Romans above them), although I do hold them in a special spot because at one point, my mom thought I was going to be a boy, and called me Thor, because I kicked a lot or something.
The Aztecs hold a place in my heart, because I did a project on them in 2nd or 3rd grade, and they were incredibly scientific and advanced.
And also, just think of Maya as a variant of Maia, and then you’re all good! I hope to get to Mayan ruins someday. Are they absolutely fantastic??

Hmm. If I somehow end up getting my hands on them, I’ll give them a shot! Right now I have a backlog of other books, plus galleys to read and review.

Hahah what do they have in them that’s blasphemous? I read a part of the first book of the Kane chronicles and actually stopped because I didn’t enjoyed it as much as I thought I would, since I’ve loved Egyptian gods since I was little. I think it was the new style of writing.

@knoxandonyx I’m going to chime in here and say that yes, Mayan ruins are awesome. I’ve been to a few, and though I’m nowhere near an expert, I can attest to the fact that they rock.

@knoxandonyx My parents were thinking of naming me Artemis! So funny haha. Gotta love those mythology names. And Mayan ruins- if you have the chance, go! They were so amazingly spectacular. It sounds lame, but looking at them made my heart ache thinking about everything that had happened at those places, plus the sheer beauty. They were truly magnificent.

@garyoak The books themselves aren’t blasphemous, the blasphemy lies in me saying that they’re better than Riordan’s original series ;)

@lunascreatures not sure if that was meant to be a pun, but it was a good one :)
