UWC Applicants for the year 2015

To everyone who may feel devastated by not being accepted into the UWC prgram, I would like to share my son’s experience at the summer program at Pearson College. Before he would be eligible to apply, we thought the camp would be a good opportunity for him to understand the philosophy of the program better. He came back and said was the best three weeks of his life, with his eyes all red from crying so much. He met the best people from all over the world. The facilitators are all UWC students and most participants are hopefuls…

BUT the next day, he told me flat out that he has no interest in applying to the school. He has gone through the IB system, PYP and some MYP, liked the projects. But then he decided he wanted to attend a traditional elite boarding school after doing that summer program the year before. For my son, he prefers the more practical approaches to learning, he enjoys academic competition and having many shorter assignments as opposed to the LONG assessments of the IB is more suitable to his learning style. He also expressed frustration
sometimes with the peacenik conflict resolution, meditation type of activities…

At UWC, there is very little supervision and students are expected to be completely self- motivated to study, do community projects, get organized, etc. My son knew he wasn’t that type of teenager. He needed the discipline of a traditional dorm. Instead of having to initiate everything himself like the IB, he enjoys having opportunities that his school arranges like feeding homeless people and coaching special Olympics… At Pearson, people run alot for exercise, he likes having sports facilities and coaches around.

We were both happy he got to attend the camp to know that he is not suitable for UWC. Some of you won’t have that luxury but do realize that this is a very alternative program and it is not necessarily suitable for all personalities and for some, it may not bring out the best in you. I hope you all find the school which is besr suited for YOU!

I was looking at cafepress for UWC hoodies. Searching for “United World College” yielded this hoodie as one of the top hits. Coincidence? I thought so when applying.

Ahahhahaha, I burst out laughing when I saw that, that is awesome looool.

Hi guys! I know I’m really late and that most of you are on FB now, but I thought I’d see if anyone here is able to answer my questions. I’m a junior from the U.S. and I applied last year, but didn’t even get an interview. I was wondering if anyone here has ever considered applying directly to one of the three colleges that accept direct applications? Or if anyone has heard of someone who has done that? I’m not even sure if is possible for students from the U.S. to apply directly to LPC, Waterford and Maastricht; the websites are a bit unclear about that… I thought that maybe applying directly would be an easier process, even if I wouldn’t be able to get a scholarship from the school…

Oops, I meant SEA, not LPC

Hi everyone! I’m not too sure if this thread is still active, but I can’t seem to find the Facebook page so this will have to do. Hi, I’m Ciara, I’m half Japanese-Brazilian and half English, and I just arrived in the US from Kenya. I was looking into UWC Atlantic and am planning on applying. Does anyone know whether it is possible to visit the campus?

May I just start off by saying you’re a really awesome mix. :stuck_out_tongue: Not entirely sure if you can visit the campus but I can add you to the fb group if you want, people might know more on there.

Hello everyone! I’m from the US and I applied last year. I have a friend at Atlantic and my brother is at RCN, and they both can confirm that the party scene is intense and unsupervised. How is everyone doing on their applications thus far? What have you put down for your books? The best of luck to you all

Hello guys,
I am Shoeb khan from India and am too joining UWC pune. Can anybody please help me regarding questions which were given to me by the UWC Commitee India.the questions are as follows:-

Hello everyone,
I am Chanha Kim from the USA. I’m applying for UWC this year, and my top choice is the Atlantic College. Any advice that you guys could give will be appreciated greatly. :)

Heeey @chikpea012, my top choice in also AC. The only advice that I could give you is to be yourself, if you get too much help from people with the app, it won’t be your own anymore, The NC wants to know YOU, they want to see if you could make the best out of the UWC experience, and if you don’t get in, well, then it just wasn’t meant to be, maybe the NC didn’t think you were ready or that you could cope with the IB, or something. Also if the app doesn’t reflect your values and your personality they’ll see right through it during the interview. And I realize that I must sound very annoying, cause that’s what people who told me to be myself, sounded like to me last year. But it is true, there’s no guideline on how to get in to a UWC. They don’t want the same kind of people; UWC students tend to have the same core values of wanting to improve the world, to make a change, but they’re all unique in their own ways. Some of the students lean towards human rights, others medicine, others sustainability, diplomacy… No two UWC students are the same. Just try your best, and show them how you can take advantage of the UWC experience, and how you could represent your country. I read somewhere that they want people who have their own opinions and values, but are open-minded and willing to hear other people’s side of things. That’s the whole reason Kurt Hahn established the UWC’s, to unite people and to promote peace and understanding between nations. And I realize that this became a rant, that tends to happen a lot when I start to talk about UWC sigh, well I hope this is in the least bit helpful.

Be careful about sharing your real names on here everyone!

@CelineTRKY‌ Thanks so much! It helped a lot! And good luck on your application.
@Springflower13‌ Is there a way to edit my real name out of my comments? Just wondering if I had that option.

@chikpea012‌ Thanks! Good luck on yours as well

Chickpea, I would ask a moderator, sorry I don’t know!

hey everyone! a little late to the party, but just wanted to wish you all well with your applications!!

Hi! I’m just submitting my application now and I am so nervous! I live in the US but I have dual citizenship with Germany and I have lived in South Africa for three years in the past. I have 100+ hours of volunteering and my grades are all As but not high As. I do indoor track, lacrosse, key club, peer tutoring and French Honors Society. I did not do awesome on my PSATs and I don’t know what I want to do as a career pathway. What do you guys think my chances are of getting in??? Thanks and good luck to everyone applying :)

Hey everyone! I’m a current student at UWC USA who went through the US selection process. If anyone has questions, I’d be happy to help out  Good luck!

Hey everyone! I’m Atharv from India, i have applied for UWC for the second time, (fingers crossed  ) I remember @itsmebhavi from last year’s cc thread. It’d be great if you could add me to the facebook group ( Facebook name, can i tell my full, real name?) so that i could share my excitement with everyone! All the best to the applicants! Cheers! :-bd

I just found out I’m a semifinalist for UWC-USA, and the written applications are behind me, I think. (Right?)

So,
What’s the interview process like? (Both the phone interview and in-person, though the former is of higher priority at the moment). Should I be preparing answers or are they more informal/think of it on the spot questions?
