UWC applicants year 2014

For the UWC enthusiasts, there is a clip of Malala’s friends at Atlantic College on the CBS News website tonight. They are examples of the kind of students at the UWCs and it’s fun to see AC.

aha silly me I created a page instead of a group, so here is the link to the GROUP:

Here we can directly contact eachother!

Hey all!

So in the UK the apps came out mid august and are due in by November 13th! Only 1 month to go! I can’t believe it; I literally have NO IDEA where the time has gone. I’m super excited about the open day at AC for British applicants on Saturday 19th - anyone here coming?

About music programs, I believe most colleges have extracurricular music opportunities, but Adriatic is reputed to have the best. Do any of the Canadians know anything about like extracurriculars or other stuff about Pearson?

Hi everyone. I’m late to the party though. I am so happy I found this thread. I’m from Jamaica and I really want to get into UWC for 2014-2016. The application are still not availible for us even though they said the end of September.
What sucks for me is that this is the only year I can apply because if I don’t get in next year, when I go to my 12th grade at my school or 6th form as we call it I have to sign a contract saying that I have to stay for two years and I can’t leave half way through.
I wanted to know if there are any other Jamaicans planning to apply. I have no clue how competitive it is here but 4 people got spaces this year.
My biggest problem is that I’m very involved in extracurriculars at school but not outside of school.I do Debating, I’m on the team for my school, I help with the homework program, I’m a student’s councilor,UN club and I do a club similar to rotary for young people. I don’t really do anything out of school because my chools ecs program is very in depth already. Will this affect my chances. (sorry for the long reply)

Hi!I’m from China.
I’ve heared UWC from a schoolmate!
It just amazing me! I am eager for going to an internationalized school all the time.
I can learn different things from people all over the world.
So when i met UWC, i believed the school is what i was looking for longtime.
It is lucky to find the CC,So many friends struggle for the same gola here.
Nice to see your guys! Let’s work hard together!

Today our national committee has just posted the essay topics for this year’s applicants. but I am really confused. The topic is “Unexpected encounter with unknown being.” but is the ‘‘unknown being’’ some kind of metaphor? Or is it a story we are supposed to write? Like make up something? I haven’t really given much thought about the essay yet so maybe it is something obvious that I just can’t ‘‘knack’’ so can someone please enlighten me?

Pashay, I’m going on Saturday - am incredibly excited for it as well. I’ve only completed sections 1 and 3 for the written application but I hope to do it well within time for editing and stuff. :)

They finally posted the application

Ihavenoideaa,

I think that your essay topic is most likely so open ended and non specific because your committee wants to see what you will do with it. Instead of getting 500 of the exact same essay, they can reasonably expect to get several similar, generic essays, as well as many that will stand out. Start thinking about it though, I can not stress enough how crucial your essays will be in getting you to the interview stage.

Lots of Canadian love,

I know it is crucial that is why I am thinking about it too much. What really worries me is if I take the essay topic too ‘‘metaphorically’’ they could say it is off topic (in SATs you get 0 points). The topic is so open that it I am afraid I won’t find its limits and go crazy(?) with it

Yaay, applications just came out. Soo incredibely excited! The deadline is 8th January so I have quite a lot of time considering that I will have more that 3 weeks of holidays until January. I just came home from school an hour ago so I haven’t even read it. So it is time for doing that.

Finally I managed to read the whole application form. We have the general topic for one of the compulsory essays. Why are you interested in UWC, in what way could you use the knowledge you gain during your two years in an international environment in your future, how could you contribute to UWC? Or something like this. So I’ll have to write something special!

That’s exciting MediDuet! Good luck to everyone on your applications!

Hey all!

@okp1000: Aww it’s annoying this is your only chance :frowning: To find out about the number of people who apply, try emailing your National Committee and see what they say. Also, for your ECs, I don’t think it matters very much whether you do thing inside or outside of school: the important thing is that you can show you have a motivation to serve and do interesting things, whether inside or outside of your school community.

@jenniferwang0120: It’s great you heard about it. I felt exactly the same at first! Good luck :)

@aureleo: Ooh look forward to seeing you there! Where are you coming from? I’m coming from near Kendal. Also, for the application, I’ve so far bullet pointed more or less what I’m going to say for questions 1, 3, and 4. I’m still pondering what to write for the mini personal statement - any idea what it’s meant to be about? What they’re looking for?

@Ihavenoideaa: I feel really sorry for you and the fact you have tricky essay questions :frowning: It makes me feel really lucky.

Keep working hard on your apps guys!

@pashay thanks alot. I’m going to start reviewing the application over this holiday.
Good luck to all you guys:)

@okp1000 i see you

@celinewantsuwc your name is hilarious

Pashay, I’m coming from Manchester so about 3 and a half hours. I have no idea because I’ve not really had time to complete the application with mocks, so I’ll most likely do it in the holidays. I’m actually really worried as I chose the wrong person to write my community reference as I couldn’t find my ex volunteering leader’s email! I’m planning to write all of my volunteering etcetra in my personal statement as I my head of year has already written my ref. Oops. :(

Im applying next year too!
First CC post btw, I made this just to join the discussions regarding UWC

@meinnagger: Haha that’s what I did last year.
@aureleo: Ahhh, I saw this too late; we could’ve met up! I had sooo much fun yesterday though. I loved actually being there and looking round and stuff! It just made it seem so real…
It’s a bit annoying about your references though  They’re pretty important; but I think so long as you write your application really well and make it clear what you’ve done and the like, it should be ok. They seem to be quite understanding :)
