I was wondering what is the word limit for your essays.? Here we have to write two and it’s only 300 words. It has been really hard.

For the two compusory essays we don’t have word limit. For the two optionals the limit is 400-600 words.

@aureleo: I’ll have to recheck. But they still don’t do the humanities I wanted. And yes, that is why Pearson was my number 1, cos of the full scholarship!!! I know, everyone seems to need scholarships… Ahhh…
@Hedwig8: Yes, for the activities question that is my plan, to have 5 themes of things I do, ie. Music: piano and voice lessons, choir, and church youth band or whatever, then the same for another 4 categories. That way you get to show lots of things you do, but it does mean you have very little detail. My reasoning is they can get detail at the interview Good Luck!

And okp1000 in Britain, it’s not even a word limit, it’s characters! We have 1500 characers including spaces and skipping lines etc. It’s literally nothing. It’s about 235 words :O

Hi all,

I am also applying this year 2013-2014. I am so EXCITED. What SAT scores do you think the average applicants get?

OH and also, if you’re applying from USA, the applcation deadline is January 10th right?!!! :o

@Bellath I dont think that there is an average SAT score. I’ve talked to two current students and one got a 1700 and the other a 2300, but the girl with the 1700 had really good extra curriculars and said that they probably looked more at ECs than her SAT score… And yes, the deadline in Jan 10 :)
Also, where in the US are you from?

Extracurriculars that fit the mission are more important than scores. Being a junior also helps. My S got an interview as a sophomore, reapplied as a junior with the same scores but overseas as an exchange student and was accepted for 13-15. He’s at AC and loving it!

@teczz7, and Apollo, thanks so much for replying!!! I am so happy to find others who are applying with me. I am applying from New Jersey. And I am a junior. I just found out about UWC while researching by myself this summer and I thought it was perfect!! How far along are you guys with your apps?

@bellath, its always fun to find others applying (although I’m only a sophmore, so my chances of being accepted are slimmer ). As for the apps, I’m not very far. I’m still trying to find a way to make my essays sound like something I would write and not just a generic essay. I also havent even started asking for recs yet. How far along are you?

Sorry about the multiple posts. My phone was acting crazy. My daughter graduated from UWC USA in May. I would be happy to answer any questions about USA. I miss the place!

@tecz77, I just started my short answers today. Where are you applying from. And @Apollo6, how good do the academics have to be? I know it is a very important factor, but my GPA is only 4.35. I am so scared with my academics and SAT’s.

@bellath, good luck on your short answers! I’m applying from DC… And dont worry about your academics, your GPA is actually higher than some of the current students I’ve talked to. But again, they did have very time-consuming ECs…

@bellath no way! I’m applying from New Jersey too!

How do my chances look? I’m currently a sophomore and am volunteering with special needs children every week. I’m also in several clubs in school and I am number one in my class with a 4.6 GPA. my clubs include: interact, FCCLA, student council, varsity swim team, and renaissance. I am in all honors courses. I don’t know my PSAT scores yet but I think I get them soon. My dad is also in the US Army so all my life I’ve been moving around my country and lived in Germany for two years. I want to go to Atlantic, Adriatic, Pearson, or USA colleges. Do you think my chances are okay?

@Santoast13, always awesome to see US applicants! Your ECs look good, but from what I’ve been able to figure out from current students, there really is no way to gauge your chances for acceptance. One of my friends applied a few years ago and had incredible ECs and was top of her class, but she wasnt accepted. Just try to be yourself and spend a lot of time on the application. Good luck!

Does anyone have any tips for writing the application essays. Do you think it’s a good idea to almost write it like a story instead of just a regular essay? Also do you think they pay close attention to the word limit?

I have one more question guys. My topic is Unexpected encounter with unknown being. However they do not say what kind of ‘‘essay’’ they want. Do you think a story or a ‘‘journal’’ would be a good idea?

@okp1000, just remember that its always best to really let them get a good idea of who you are. Dont try to cram too much into the essays, its not a resume or list of how amazing you are. But also dont write too little. I would try to stay under the required word limit, but if its within 10 or so words dont sweat it, I’m sure you’ll be fine (assuming that it doesnt automatically cut you off). I know that I, personally, am writing mine more as a story, to give the reader more of a sense of who I am. But just keep it honest and not too long and you’ll be fine! Good luck!
@ihavenoideaa, just do whatever you think is best! if you think it’ll be a better essay in a specific format, go for it! From what I can tell, they’re pretty relaxed about that kind of stuff… Good luck!

@tecz77 ok thank you so much for replying! I’m really excited for this! Are you applying this year?
