UWC applicants year 2014

@Cleo010, hi there! I am from a small town with 12000 citizens. It is 20 km away from the city centre of Budapest and it is a 25 minutes ride by bus to Buda. (the western part of the city)
Answering your second question, AD does offer the IB and they obligate every student of theirs to study Italian. As far as I know you can go to any universities after AD. If I am right there is a Hungarian alumni who went to AD and then continued his studies in the fild of engineering in the UK. But I don’t know much about the special music program and where you can contine your studies after. But what I know is that you can choose music apart from your IB subjects if you choose it as one of your CASs.
I’ve read (I think in a blog) that in one of the past years students who were involved in music at the college (I don’t know which category of the two) had the chance to travel in Italy and play for retired people and so on during project week.
I also think it is amazing. We can share our thoughts during the process with other people who are in the same situation and they understand you.
Best wishes from Hungary

For Indian citizens-
‘‘Application forms will be issued from 16th September, 2013 until 31st
January, 2014 only. Completed applications must reach on or before 14th
February, 2014. Late applications will not be accepted.’’

Im guessing it would be around the same time for other countries aswell,
ITS GETTING CLOSER GUYS :3

Alright thanks man! Quite nervous now :s

Hey everyone!

So, I was recently accepted to the UWC movement through the Alberta (Canada) National Committee, and thought that I would just offer myself up as a bit of a resource for you all, albeit a naive, inexperienced, and still excited first year student who is in only his fourth week as a UWC student.

If anyone has any questions for next year (or even years after that), feel free to message me with questions or post them on the thread.

Good luck to all of you, and try not to stress about applications this far in advance. Enjoy life right now, stress-free (relatively) as it is, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions or address any concerns which you may have about the applications or school life.

Dear CanadianEh323,
Thank you so much for offering your help.
Can I ask you which college you have been accepted to and how you feel there?

Hey MediDuet, I suppose that would indeed have been a good idea to mention!

I was accepted to the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West, better known just as UWC-USA (for those people who may not have known). We are only four weeks in, but so far at least it has been absolutely amazing. Tiring, but amazing.

Let me know if you guys have anything else you want to know, be it about school life itself, being away from home, or even the application. Also, if you do not come from Canada or the U.S. (both of whose applications are quite similar), I’d be happy to ask any of my co-years about the process in your country for you.

~CanadianEh323

Dear CanadianEh323, thank you very much for your answer. :)

Best wishes MediDuet

Hey, CanadianEh323, this may be considered a sort of odd question but I was wondering what teacher you chose to fill out your recommendation? I’m sort of stuck between going to a teacher whose class I’m doing very well in, or going to a teacher whose class is more interesting to me, and also quite centered around learning about different cultures and people, but I’m not doing the best in.

Hiya Winchesterpower,

For my letters of references I needed one from my current principal, one from a current teacher, and one from an external source (I chose my old principal, who I’d known for 10 years previously). So, basically, the only letter over which I had any control was the teacher reference. I can tell you that I spent a good week (I hadn’t heard about UWC until like 2 months before applications were due, so didn’t have any more time than that) debating between asking my English teacher, whose class I did well in but I was less friendly with than other teachers, or my biology/chemistry teacher, who I was good friends with but did less (although still decently) well in the class. In the end I chose the English teacher, mainly because I had really stressed my communication skills in my essays and wanted a reference letter that could back that up.

I never saw my letter, as I received it sealed, and therefore when I mention my choice I need to stress that, for all I know, it could have been the wrong choice, however it clearly wasn’t wrong enough to disqualify me from the interview pool. I think that what it comes down to is picking a person who can write you a letter relevant to your strongest skills, the ones that you are stressing in your essays and application, and being very clear with the person about what you want them to mention.

On a related note, one of my reference letters came in a week late because the submission button somehow didn’t work and they didn’t immediately notice. UWC is very understanding, and they give you plenty of opportunity to stay in the running if something goes wrong.

Good luck Winchesterpower, and if you have any more questions private message me, or post on here again.

~CanadianEh323

To everyone applying to the UWC movement, I would like to stress something heavily: essays. SPEND SOME TIME ON THEM. Seriously. A good essay can guarantee you an interview.

Ah thanks CanadianEh323 I was really freaking out over my recommendations.

I also have probem with that. The teacher who I wanted to ask to write my recommendation is not my teacher anymore. :frowning: We got an other teacher for this year because of some new rules. She is still the one who I prepare for my competitions with but she is not teaching me any official subjects. And in the form the teachers have to fill there is a place where they have to write which subject they teach us. She knows me best apart from the form-master. (Who also has to write a recommendation.) As soon as the application is out I have to send a mail to my National Committee and ask them about it. :/

Do the best you guys can in terms of recommendations, but don’t stress over it. Within your teacher options you are inherently limited in terms of choice, so pick the best one and then you will just have to live with it. Recommendations are important, don’t get me wrong, however you can easily let yourself shine in other areas.

As example, at least in my opinion, the part of my application that stuck out was my essay section, which I dedicated many hours to.

Obviously the entire thing is important, however I know for example that of the three of us from my school who applied, I had the lowest grade average and yet was the only one invited to interview (and once you get to that part, the application itself matters very little).

As usual, I am always open to questions and will help you in any way I can (some UWC students will say that they cannot help you specifically because it is cheating, I consider it to be a good use of resources).

~CanadianEh323

Wow so glad I found this thread so I’m in 10th grade in Georgia-USA I’m planning on applying at UWC heard all about it from a international camp I went to this summer, well my credentials are not the best but I have a 3.9 and uw I think it’s 4.3 took 6 AP classes (3 last year 3 now), and involved with Model UN- secretary, Student council President for my class, and various smaller clubs. I use to do cross country, but due to a financial hardship I couldn’t do it this year. But I still run on my own. I hope things turn out well from me when application season comes around I hope to see you all one day!!!

You guuuuuyssss people after my own heart (I started last year’s thread ridiculously early, too!)

I’m applying again this year, even though it’ll mean i sorta maybe might have two high school diplomas? (i can finish my graduation requirements after junior year if i take one class over the summer)

and so the waiting game begins. if anyone has any questions about last year’s US application (not the interview, though, I didn’t get through to that last year) I’d be more than happy to answer! and if anyone has questions about how to not die of excitement, i’ll do my best but i’m not the best authority on that :P

In case you are in the US and you were waiting until October 1st to do you application stuff they did just post it~

Lucky you!
Good luck to all US applicants strating your applications!
I am still waiting for the NC to post the application form and I guess I will be doing the same at least until the middle of October.

UWC-USA applications are out early!!! Literally sitting in the student lounge shaking!! Good luck to everyone!

I heard that the US applications are out, so just wanted to wish everyone good luck with the application, and hopefully with interviews as well.

For aspiring UWC students, you are ALWAYS welcome to leave me a message if you are looking for advice or help with your application.

Good luck again to you all,

~CanadianEh323 (UWC-USA '15)

Hey Guys,

I’ve been quite inactive lately because I just started a new school (if I get into UWC then it will be number 9!). In the UK we only have like 2 months left till the application closes!!! At the same time I’m taking 10 GCSEs in only 1 year because of my switching schooling systems… The pressure is already mounting!
It’s so inspiring reading this thread and hearing about everything everyone does! Just imagine all the people on here times 200 and how much they could achieve…

@Lunascreatures, Welcome back to the thread for this year! I’m sorry you didn’t get in last year, but good luck for this year :)

I agree, for references I think lots of people find it tricky. Here in the UK we have to do one community reference, which was easy for me, and then one academic one. I’m a bit stuck because I just switched schools and the one I was in before was all in French so a reference from there would be in French… But my teachers there are the ones who know me best. I’m hesitating between a science teacher who was also head of our form and knew my well and who I worked on the council with, but can only write it in French; the other option is my previous English teacher who knew me really well and was really nice too, and would be able to write it in English, but didn’t know me from a leadership point of view… Ahh, so tricky.

Anyhow, good luck all. Thanks @CanadianEh323 for you offer of help  We year 0s are always looking for people to ask questions to.
