UWC applicants year 2014

Sorry to throw this into to the conversation, but does anyone know if UWC allows for a one year student or a post graduate student?

@dckdck, I’ve read on one of the UWCs’ website that they don’t allow students to take only one year. And they also don’t allow students to join after the first year of IB is done at an other IB school. It is a two year course. But I don’t know about UWCSEA and UWC Maastrict. I also don’t have information about the post graduate students.

oh my gooood oh my god oh my god it’s out? i wouldn’t have known had i not checked this thread wow okay this is scary i was not prepared for this aaaah

@pashay thanks! and if the uk allows paper recommendations, i think it would be possible to get the rec and then get it translated (officially, by a certified translator) and include both the original and the translation. i’d email to ask, but the language should not have to be a barrier for getting a good recommendation submitted.

i’d like people’s opinions about recommendations - since i moved this summer, i don’t know who to get the extracurricular one from!
i’m only in marching band right now (because it takes up so much time until october), and it is not personal at all, so the directors don’t really know me. should i wait until i know some advisors in the other extracurriculars i’m starting (i mean, i’d have to know them long enough to feel comfortable asking them for a rec, but ask soon enough that they could get it in on time) or ask one of my counselor-type people from a thing I did this summer? it was only ten days, so i feel like the basis for a recommendation would not be very strong, but i did talk about many of the things that UWC emphasizes with the counselor, and the whole reason we were there was to learn about sustainable forestry in the puerto rican rainforest, which is a very…UWC…thing.

I DUNNO.

Hello everyone who just joined ! I’m from India and here you have to give two reccomendations+principal report.
My first reccomendation is from my favourite teacher who knows me pretty well, and since her subject is English Lit,a subject I want to pursue in UWC,I think it’s better to choose her.n
My second reccomendation is from my History teacher, Hist. Is my favourite subject, and again a subject I would want to do in UWC,and also the teacher knows me for a long time, she taught me in 6th grade and is now teaching me 4 years later in 10th.

The main problem I faced in deciding the teachers was that I really wanted my class teacher’s who does leadership class+mentorship+life skills, but I asked previous UWC applicants from our school and they told me that the Principal takes the teachers advice for her report so then I was pretty okay.

So I guess the main reason I chose teachers were choosing teachers who taught subjects I would want to pursue in UWC.

Thats just me though :stuck_out_tongue: I’m getting my application next Friday,so nervous already !

Hi! I’m from India too ^^
I’m so excited for the application, though I have no idea when they’re going to send it to us… How d’you know that you’re getting yours on friday?
oh my goshhh. I can’t wait haha.
and mahindra is awesome. They have this really pretty campus…
what are your preferences? what d’you think they’re looking for?
I have no clue about which teacher i’m gonna get my recommendations from… how d’you choose?
Also, i’m kinda new to my school, so none of my teachers know me all that well.

Hey @cranberries97  I will be sending the demand draft on Monday and it takes 4 days to come from Pune to Delhi back,so is should get it by next Friday or next2next Monday.
I have absolutely no idea what they’re looking for ! it’s pretty nerve racking :s
I’m guessing you meant my college preferences ? Well then it’s 1)Mahindra,2)Atlantic,3)Adriatic.
Maybe you should ask UWC if you can get recommendations from your previous school as well.
Which school and where,btw ?

heyy.
I just got my form yesterday!!
it’s deep stuff :stuck_out_tongue:
Though i really like how they’ve been so thoughtful about the questions they put across. and, dude, there’s only one reccomendation, not two- and it HAS to be from your grade 10 head teacher…
my preferences are 1)adriatic 2)atlantic 3)waterford/ mostar/ pearson
honestly, i don’t think it matters, they’re ALL so awesome!
fingers crossed for getting in, and i hope all of us make it! ^^
what school are you in?

oh, btw, i’m in mahatma gandhi, ahmedabad

Hello! I thought I’d jump onto the bandwagon, as I’m currently in the process of writing this app. I’m a Brit, but from India.

oooh nice ^^ so does that mean you’re applying through the indian national committee?

Oh hey I was just wondering if anyone was applying to any other study abroad opportunities? My stepmom was kinda getting on my case about having a backup plan for studying abroad so I looked into it and there is a program for US students called NSLI-Y if anyone is interested. (I especially think you should consider applying if you are a junior because then you are way more likely to have an opportunity to learn about different cultures)

@cranberries97 Havent recieved my form yet, whats the format like ?
MAN IS IT REALLY TOUGH ? :$

heyyy, I’m so sorry for the late reply.
The form has like 4 sections. The first is just general stuff(name, age, gender, etc), the second is financial information your parents need to fill in, the third is stuff you need to get your head teacher/principal to fill, and the last part’s for you. I wouldn’t say that it’s particularly TOUGH, but it really needs you to think. I think they’ve really come up with some pretty thought-provoking questions this year. It’s an interesting form ^^
I think It’s gonna be worth going through the application process even if we don’t get in. Fingers crossed, though!
oh, what i’d give to get in :frowning:
which school are you in, btw?

Im from The Shri Ram School,Delhi-NCR
Im sure im not getting in,but im quite excited to do the app !
How long did the app take to come ? (from the day you sent your demand draft/cheque)

let’s see… we sent in the demand draft last tuesday, and the form arrived on saturday. so it took four days. Besaides, delhi-mumbai, delhi-ahmedabad’s about the same distance. The thing is that we sent it pretty early, probably before they had a lot of people asking for forms.
I think the uwc admin must be pretty busy posting apps right now, since there’s lots of people asking for them…That’s probably why yours still hasn’t come.
And I’ve heard of your school! it’s pretty well-known…
Also, don’t be so sure you won’t get in, you never know. let’s just hope they like our applications ^^
haha, maybe if we get selected for the interview, I’ll meet you there :stuck_out_tongue:
cyaaaa, wootwhoop, I know you’re gonna make it ^^
I really like your name, btw~

Winchester, in 2012 my sophomore son applied to UWC, NSLIY year, Yes Abroad year and Rotary youth exchange. He was interviewed for all of them and accepted to all BUT UWC. He happily went off to China with his first choice program, reapplied while abroad and is now at Atlantic College. I think having a back up plan is a good idea, especially if you are a younger student.

Heya! Even I’m applying for UWCMC ( India ) year 2014. I’ve recieved my application and I’m in a process to complete it. Hope I will get in this year , I’ve applied last year even but age was a problem. And I’m in grade 11th this year. So people? Excited? I’m, to the core   Sorry , forgot to mention my School, I’m from Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 , Vijayawada. So I’m a southie! Hope to get into the interview and meet you all. Wootwhoop? Canberries 97. Delhi people eh ? Nice to meet ya everyone!  My name’s PRIYANKA KHUSH! You people can call me KHUSH.( pretty late I told this) I know I’m little dumb enough for such things :P

@Apollo6 It’s so cool he got to visit China so young. How was his experience?
I wish it was possible for all of us to apply for something like that for backup as well, but unfortunately, most of these things are reserved for Canadian and American citizens :’(

I wonder if there are any similar programs for international students :(

and, Priyanka, good luck with your app! how’d you find it?

Rotary Youth exchange exists in many countries. Yes brings students from Muslim countries to the U S http://yesprograms.org There are other exchange programs as well. Look for ones that have a long history such as AFS or YFU.
