Oh, by the way, from my new avatar you can probably tell which school S chose.
Let’s go Hokies!

Congratulations! I hope your son has a wonderful time at Virginia Tech! Enjoy your visits to Blacksburg. It’s a wonderful area to visit! Hope you can get to a football game. That is fun. You’ve done a great job in helping your son find a great school. And yes, Let’s go Hokies!
@STEM2017 When did your son apply to Galileo? We applied 2 weeks ago and were told today that there were no more spots available…
Sorry to hear that.
I’m not exactly sure when he applied but it was quite a while ago. He was accepted to VT in Feb RD round then he applied to Galileo right away.
Let me talk to him and get specifics.
S applied on Feb 28 and was accepted on Mar 8.
Hopefully spots will open up now that decision day has passed.
We were told that you could not apply there until you had your hokie SPA and had accepted the offer of admission. How did you guys get around that if he accepted yesterday?
Someone gave you bad information. Like I said, my S applied to Galileo on Feb 28, long before he accepted his offer of admission.
The info about Galileo is on the website. You could have applied before accepting an offer of admission, as long as you’ve been admitted to engineering. They start reviewing applications in January. So, ED kids and kids that were accepted in February could have already applied before the kids not accepted until March. Hopefully, some spots will open up. Good luck! https://www.eng.vt.edu/ceed/hypatia-galileo/apply
@eaglemom2014. Even if your son doesn’t get into Galileo, there is a mentorship program that he can work with. I thought my daughter was all in for the Hypatia dorm, but she decided to forgo that and Honors College dorm in order to ‘meet different people’. Given that most kids have placed themselves in a high pressure stem environment, since eight or ninth grade on, that may be a good choice for some.
Email has been sent out that no one will taken off the waitlist. Don’t know if that applies to CoE WL as well but if they take any off it, would guess it will be few. Looks like their yield held up this year. Will be interesting to see the size of this class.
@VABogart curious did you get the oos waiver at TAMU ??
@Jonsmom14 S did not receive an OOS waiver at Texas A&M. Since TAMU is charging OOS students $55,000 next year (a $7000 increase from last year), it made it much easier for S to select UCF (which with his scholarship will cost about $27,000 next year). I heard that TAMU waivers were given to only a tiny number (around 3%) of OOS students.
@VABogart wow that increase is crazy. Well that’s one more college off the list. Thks for the scoop and good luck in Fla I’m sure your son will be successful where ever he goes !!
My son ultimately chose RIT over VA Tech. He was offered a $4000 a year scholarship from VA Tech around mid-April after our Hokie Focus visit (further incentive?). After not being offered any initially. Unfortunately for them my son just didn’t feel connected at his visit. I thought the school was great. It does make you wonder if their yield is not what they expected this year in engineering.
It can t be bad since they aren’t using their waiting list this year.
Agree . And I don’t think it is unfortunate for VT that your son chose RIT. Schools want kids that do feel “connected” and a place like VT has plenty of kids that want to be there… Sounds like RIT was the best fit for your son. Best of luck at RIT!
I’m a little late to this - but hopefully will be helpful for anyone searching in the future. My D attending Women’s Preview Weekend and stayed in the Hypatia dorms and parents were told that this year Hypatia/Galileo LLC have a 99% success rate of getting Engineering kids to their 2nd year. It was a key part of her decision to attend VT.
If anyone here is a Costco member, this deal popped in my inbox today. Its a Lenovo Flex 5 (15" monitor) for $899. It has all the required specs for VT engineering and it looks like a solid machine.
I canceled my Lenovo P40 order ($2,000) from the VT bookstore and I’m going to take a chance on the Flex 5…and save $1,000.
The pen/stylus is extra, but you can get one for $25.
The deal expires on June 25, 2017. Here is the link…

Sophomore year is when engineering kicks in when you are taking in-major courses and the weed outs like statics. Up until that point its really just calc and science classes. Did they have a metric for how much better people in that program do getting into junior year?
S got his housing selection time slot today. Hopefully he gets the room he wants.
** Advice for future students! ** If you find a roommate ahead of time be sure to ** mutually request and accept each other ** in the portal system. My S found a potential roommate on the system. They have clicked really well. They even made arrangements on who will buy the microwave, fridge, printer, etc. My son formally requested him and he accepted. THEN they learned that S’s friend needed to also request my S and for him to accept. So now all their communications and planning may go out the window if they are not able to get each other as roommates.
I could certainly think of worse problems but I just think it’s annoying that ONE request and ONE acceptance isn’t enough. Oh well.
