I signed up for Vanderbilt and You in my area but now I’m having seconds thoughts (I have other responsibilities I would have to put on hold, etc). What exactly happens during this reception (does anyone have a reliable rundown of how the event will go)? Is it crucial?
Note: I have visited the school twice and have spoken with students and faculty, so I’m not sure if this will be helpful. I wanted to go because a student I spoke with said I should, whether or not I end up in Vandy.
The reception is nice because you get to meet accepted students, current students, and alums from your area. It’s certainly not crucial, it’s just like a little get-together with small talk and some food. Talking to alums is really great if you haven’t made up your mind yet. Getting to know other accepted students can be good for coordinating trips home and makes sure you know some people before going to school.
Definitely no need to go if you have a conflict. You just meet a few alums and recently admitted students and get a little pep talk from someone at the school.
Thanks for all the answers! I ended up going. It was like you all said. Enjoyable, but I walked away knowing nothing new. (Not a fault of the program, but because I already know a lot about the school)
@thestakesarehigh Can you comment on the attire of everyone? If I’m wearing a dress, should my shoes be heels, flats, or would oxford/converse type shoes be acceptable?
Elizabeth1315, honestly, it doesn't really matter what you wear. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. No one will be judging you based on your shoes and, unless you join an alumni organization in your home town after you graduate, you probably won't see any of those people ever again anyway.
@Elizabeth1315 Most people I saw wore business casual attire, so if you wanted to be safe, super casual shoes wouldn’t be the best. HOWEVER, like lenny said, wear whatever you feel comfortable with as long as it’s presentable! Think what you could wear for an alumni interview.
