I decided to bite the bullet and get things started for those of us who applied to Vanderbilt ED 1.

they just extended the deadline to nov 10!!

I saw that. Seems like an odd choice after resisting the pressure for so long.

I know its really weird…especially because they extended it after the original deadline…I wonder why

My daughter was invited to do the (optional) alumni interview. They let you choose an interviewer and she contacted her and is just waiting for a reply. Has anyone already heard back? Does anyone know if Vanderbilt will possibly look at the November SAT scores for ED 1?

Yes. The CoRPs interview invite is sent out to everyone. I have mine scheduled already on my end. They may look at the November SAT but their preferred final testing date was October 5th for the SAT so the odds aren’t great.

Thank you oldkingc. I am going to check with my daughter. I understand you can contact another but I think she really was interested in talking with the woman she contacted. I understand that Vanderbilt either will accept or reject at the decision point for Early. Does anyone have a theory as to why they use that approach. I can see some pros and cons but I would have thought the school would prefer to leave their options open. . .From a candidate’s perspective, at least it allows you to have closure if you are rejected

sadieshadow, at PreVU, the Vanderbilt admissions program, we were told that they either accept or deny students for ED to “rip of the bandage”. They want students to be able to get over Vanderbilt and not drag out the process, only to be disappointed again. Allow them to find another school which they are passionate about. Also, to some degree, they said that if you did not get in during ED, you more than likely would not be competitive for RD, which is typically far more selective.

I think that is a progressive and appropriate plan. I have seen students get deferred and then wait-listed and the whole process lingering until the summer. This is very disheartening and makes it very hard to get excited about any of the alternatives. I like their approach and I think it serves students well. I am thankful to have this community. At home, we are trying not to talk about the application or obsess about it. The school requires a firm list of alternatives by before Thanksgiving and expects students to work on the other supplements over the break. I won’t make a fuss about this as we have a 2 week break for Winter and I think that the schools she is applying to do not have extensive supplements. It seems to me more sensible to focus on keeping the grades up and the stress down.By the way, although I have counseled many students through the process (I am a mental health professional), this is my first to go to college.

The first person I contacted under the CoRPs interview process never responded. I “googled” the people in my area and selected that person based upon his major at Vandy and his current occupation. I wanted to interview with someone that had selected my major and had similar interests. I was really looking forward to the interview. Since he did not respond, I selected someone that majored and worked in another field. I was pleased with the interview. The interviewer was focused on me and seemed interested in my views. Now, I am glad my interviewer was outside my chosen major/career field. I realize the interview probably does not add much to my chances of admission but I hope it helps some.

I am glad a definite Accept/Decline will be given in December. If I am rejected, I can focus on my second choice.

How long did you give him/her to reply. My daughter said they said to wait a week. That seems like a long time.

I waited 8 days for the first person to respond. The second person responded the next day and I met him that same week.

What schools will you guys apply to if you dont get in?

Hi. My daughter likes Wash U, Northwestern, Duke, U Michigan and also is applying to McGill.

Question for you guys: We keep looking at the median SAT scores for Vanderbilt admitted students. They are just unbelievably high. What is your analysis of this?

I think the upward curve of SAT / ACT scores at Vanderbilt might be the steepest of any college in the U.S. over the last 5 years.

It is clearly a deliberate strategy and is clearly working as their reputation and selectivity has skyrocketed.
SAT (CR + M) Middle 50% 1410 - 1570
SAT Critical Reading Middle 50% 700 - 780
SAT Math Middle 50% 710 - 790
SAT Writing Middle 50% 680 - 770
ACT Middle 50% 32 - 34

My concern is that in the highest end of the ranges, depending on the scaling, a score of 740 can be obtained with 2 questions wrong on a subtest. We know the SAT is better at measuring differences in the middle of the range. S0-for the median scores to be that high, they must be preferentially accepting many kids who are in the 770+ range. These kids are not different from the 750 range kids. It does challenge the idea that the admission process is as “holistic” as they claim.

The numbers were for First-Year Students Entering Fall 2013. Any idea what the ranges were for ACCEPTED students?

It’s not only the SAT scores that have skyrocketed at Vandy. The percentage of students at the top of their class, receiving high honors/awards, in major leadership positions, captains of varsity teams, and excelling in the fine arts have also skyrocketed at Vandy. I don’t think Vandy cares more about these top students today compared to 10 years ago. Today more of these students are choosing to attend Vanderbilt and the scores reflect where top students decide to enroll.
The above changes don’t just randomly happen. There are multiple reasons for this but it comes down to leadership at Vanderbilt. They understand what todays top students want in their college experience. In student surveys Vandy is ranked among the highest in “quality of life, happiness, quality of faculty, great base city to live in”. Something great is happening at Vanderbilt.

That makes a lot of sense. Just talking to someone yesterday re. Vandy and she told me that she can’t believe how many kids want to go there. . .it feels like suddenly. How might this have changed (I assume for the better) the vibe on campus?

Does anyone know how/when we will hear back? Do they send letters in the mail, or is it posted online? And when??? I’m dying to know!
