Vanderbilt University Transfer Thread Fall 2016

Waitlisted CAS Econ. Congrats to everyone who’s gotten in so far!

Do you know how Vanderbilt is with wait listed students historically?

Rejected CAS !

Although I am a junior transfer, My 1700ish SAT is probably the reason why I got rejected…

Has anyone heard back today? My counselor told me that they would most likely be reviewing my application in the committee meeting last Thursday and that decisions would be released the following Monday. I’m really hoping they got to my app because I really need to start finalizing my plans for the fall.

I haven’t :frowning: I was really hoping I would hear back today too

This is also confused to me. btw, I’ve sent my counselor an email on Friday, and nothing till now.

Guys the portal only changes Friday’s. The emails send on Monday but no new decisions come out Monday.

Whare the chances of someone like me transferring to Vandy from Nashville State Community College? I’m 25. I did terribly in HS and Austin Peay (my first college). I was basically expelled from APSU for bad grades. That was four years ago. I just finished my first semester at Vol State and am transferring this summer to NSCC. My GPA for this semester at Vol State was 3.6. My ACT in high school was 19, but I’ve read that they don’t look at these if you are so many years removed from HS.

If I keep the grades up, do some extras, and write good essays would I stand a chance, or am I doomed. Thanks.

If you guys have any questions, I’d be happy to try to answer them! I just finished my first year as a Vanderbilt transfer student.

@embellishment Where do you recommend for housing? I believe we have Blakemore, Lupton, W&M college, towers, Mayfield, and McGill as options.

Any other waitlisted transfers- any updates on your status on the list?

Hey y’all! I was accepted as a transfer last fall. If you guys have any questions, feel free to message me or ask a question on here. I’d be happy to help as much as I can. Good luck to those of y’all still waiting on a decision!

@PsychPRC , I would recommend W&M. They are the nicest and most spacious dorms available, but they have a couple minor drawbacks. W&M may be a bit farther from your classes than other buildings, and W&M residents are required to buy a meal plan that is a couple hundred dollars more than the meal plan your year is required to buy. Some spaces have bathrooms, others don’t.

Towers is very small and very old, but it’s definitely a major party central. It’s guaranteed to be loud/smell like weed from Thurs-Sat at the least. However, the suites have their own full bathroom that residents don’t have to clean.

Honestly, it depends on what kind of environment you thrive best in. Let me know if I can clarify!

@ilikewatermelon Wow thank you so much for the comprehensive suggestion! Really provides insider-insight!

Quick question, I am freshman that has been accepted for transfer and have already put in my deposit. If my grades drop slightly since fall term will they rescind my offer?

@somehmonggirl Just saw that I was placed on the waitlist too. Not sure what the statistics are for waitlisted students but this has kinda been the summation of my college application experience. Waitlists are so nerve racking.

Has anyone else been placed on the waitlist, know someone else on the waitlist, or have any stats on waitlisted transfers?

I’m transferring credits from multiple universities and currently work full time.

My cum GPA is around a 3.61 at Lee College, UH Honors, HCC.
I have 100s of volunteer hours at numerous programs: Houston Public Library, Internship at CAMH, etc.
My essays weren’t that great because I work a full and part time job and my applications were rather rushed.
I’m also the youngest full-time employee at the company I work at and the President, (A Vanderbilt Grad) wrote me a really strong letter of Rec.

Do you think I have a chance of getting off the waitlist?

@PsychPRC No problem! Let me know if you want info about the other buildings, and I’ll try to scout it out for you.
@Applicant3000 It would really depend on how much it dropped. If it went from an A average to a B+ average, probably not. A to straight C’s on the other hand, possibly. Best thing to do would be to keep up your grades as much as possible and to give your admissions counselor a call when possible. Good luck!

My boyfriend said Blakemore has an exclusive cafeteria that’s supposed to be like lit AF or so I heard from him

Blakemore gets to eat at the athlete dining hall for dinner 5 nights a week, which is a nice perk because it’s all you can eat and they get served nice food (steaks, swordfish, milkshakes). The bad part is that it’s a 15 minute walk to campus. It’s also a renovated retirement home so the building is a little bit weird.

Lupton might be good if you’re a rising sophomore, because it’s where all the sophomores live. Centrally located and across the street from greek row, so can be loud. It’s the option that would be closest to the dining hall and classes.

W&M are super super nice, but a little bit out of the way. They are also pretty quiet with not much going on (known as GDI town) and it could be hard to meet people there.

Towers is small, old, and has a lot of partying like mentioned above. However, personally I really liked living in towers. It has a certain charm to it, a majority of transfers live there so it’s easy to hangout with each other, and it’s close to classes.

McGill is an older dorm that is known as a kind of hippie/alternative community. You would definitely meet people, but mainstream kids don’t live there.

Hey @fdgjfg thanks for the insight! It’s really helpful! I was wondering if you answer some of my questions. (1) Do you know if financial aid applies for a fifth year? I’ll be a junior this fall and I received a great amount of aid; but, I really want to spend three years at Vandy. (2) One of the reasons being that I want to double major in Poli-Sci and Econ. Do you know how difficult either programs are? (3) Also, I’m a bit scared about job recruitment / opps. I’m choosing between either V or Cornell and my goal is to pursue consulting for a few years. Do you have a gauge of whether V is a target for consulting or sales and trading? (fuck ib)… (4) Lastly, do you know anything about studying abroad?

Thanks in advance!!!

I don’t really know if either of those is really any sort of major target (maybe semi or both doing well for consulting). when compared to the super targets (Cornell may compare better to schools with elite business programs but not really ones with elite engineering and/or econ. programs). YOU would have to become the target (just because the companies come to career fairs on campus, does not necessarily mean they want to take the students there in droves). With those majors, I would suggest upper level math or statistics courses to make make yourself more marketable. Simple going to either one of them and doing a stereotypical major in econ. or polisci will not make you instantly get recruited by any of the top firms because you have a decent or even good GPA. Do not ever overestimate the effect of being a target or semi-target school. Also, the true best way to do it is to place into internships over the summer and doing well, that often trumps where the whole school is a full or semi-target (and certainly enhances if it is already a semi).

You also allude to the difficulty of the programs. You do realize that typically higher difficulty is what makes the tippy tops bigger target schools than others, which is why the places outside of the tippy tops with top UG business programs do really well with placement. Their programs are often more challenging than other business schools at non-elites (and often econ. programs outside of those known for elite UG econ. programs). And for those who place outside of the business schools at those places, they often took more rigorous coursework that was quantitative or computational in nature and did internships. They didn’t bank on their school being a target (I’m honestly fairly sure that tippy tops that are super targets don’t have bunches of students that do that either. Those students aren’t as concerned about difficulty and places like MIT and Stanford, and maybe even HYP send plenty of people from STEM into business oriented jobs/careers post-grad. They find a challenging curriculum and do the best they can and/or they get to work with the internships). Point being, you wouldn’t want to avoid difficulty and more so embrace it in moderation and demonstrate that you can do well in challenging courses that build the skills the companies desire. I just implore anyone to not overestimate the effect of being at an elite school, where it be V or Cornell. Once the school is elite, it is up to you to stand out. I doubt going to Cornell or VU for those majors should make much of a difference. Maybe check out what requirements and courses each have and see if you like it.
